STORYLINE:

Mourner Mohammad Abu Etewi gently stroked his lifeless sister's hair at a morgue in the central Gaza Strip in one of dozens of painful goodbyes Palestinians bid their loved ones on Thursday.

Airstrikes and shootings killed 94 Palestinians in Gaza overnight, including 45 who were attempting to get much-needed humanitarian aid, hospitals and the Health Ministry said Thursday.

Israel’s military did not immediately comment on the strikes.

Palestinians knelt next to the bodies of their loved ones in a recurring scene to kiss them on the forehead before their burial.

Several children screamed at the top of their lungs as adults tried to comfort them.

Dozens of people were killed in airstrikes that pounded the Strip Wednesday night and Thursday morning, including 15 people killed in strikes that hit tents in the sprawling Muwasi zone, where many displaced Palestinians are sheltering.

Mourners prayed for the victims in Khan Younis, in front of the bodies wrapped in white bags.

"My son and daughter and their children, my children, my children," screamed tearful mourner Intisar Abu Assi, who added that the family lost 13 people.

A separate strike on a school in Gaza City sheltering displaced people also killed 15 people.

Five people were killed while outside sites associated with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the newly-created American organization backed by Israel to feed the Gaza Strip’s population, while 40 others were killed waiting for aid in other locations across the Gaza Strip.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has passed 57,000, including 223 missing people who have been declared dead, since the war began on Oct. 7, 2023.

The ministry doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its death count but says that more than half of the dead are women and children.

The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking roughly 250 hostages.

STORYLINE:

Agonized Israeli hostage families urged U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday to secure a ceasefire deal that will ensure the release of their loved ones.

In Tel Aviv, families of the hostages remaining in Gaza and former hostages released from Gaza gathered outside the U.S. embassy branch office to call for an immediate deal.

There are 50 remaining hostages inside Gaza, less than half of whom are said to be alive.

"These days for us the topic is definitely the heat. It is for all people these days, but we put ourselves in the shoes of those who don't have a home, and therefore not even a little corner of shade or relief. It's often a constant struggle every day to find the shadiest spot, a refuge where you don't bother anyone. We are operational with the mobile kitchen already at 7 in the morning in some stations of the city to bring something fresh and then during the day we are here in via Sammartini and then in the evening."

Germany's ambassador to Israel Steffen Seibert joined Israeli families on Thursday at a rally in Netanya, Israel to demand the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza.

"It's clear that only a deal is the surest way to bring the hostages home," said Seibert.

He also called to end the in war in Gaza "to prevent more young Israeli soldiers from falling in the ruins of Gaza, and to free hundreds of thousands of civilians in Gaza from the terrible reality they have been living in for 20 months."

Seibert joined dozens of Israeli demonstrators and the family of Italy Chen, an Israeli-American and German soldier who was killed in the Hamas attack on Oct. 7.

Chen's family doesn’t have a grave to visit because his remains are still held captive in Gaza.

"The Middle East is at an inflection point where we see opportunity with Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and now is the time to cement the military victories on Hamas," Italy's father Ruby Chen told the Associated Press.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said Israel has agreed on terms for a new 60-day ceasefire with Hamas and that Washington would work with both sides during that time to try to end more than 20 months of war in Gaza.

Neither side has accepted the proposal announced on Tuesday by Trump, who has admonished Hamas that if the militant group does not buy into the offer, its prospects will get worse.

It’s not clear what conditions Israel agreed to.

The efforts to reach a truce are unfolding in the wake of powerful Israeli and American strikes on nuclear sites in Iran, which has long supported Hamas and just days before Trump is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.
