Residents of Baghdad's Sadr City were in mourning ahead of the day of Ashoura, the remembrance of the 7th century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein.

Mourners held funeral processions and self-flagellating in preparation for the main day of mourning which will be marked in Karbala on Sunday.

"It is the month when the master of martyrs was killed," said participant Sayyid Karrar.

The rift between Islam’s two main sects deepened after Sunnis killed Imam Hussein in battle in the Iraqi city of Karbala, south of Baghdad.

It continues to this day to play a key role in shaping the identity of Shiites, who represent over 10% of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims.

Shiites view Hussein as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad.

Volunteers in Baghdad provide the mourners with free food and drinks as they hold the rituals ahead of Ashoura Day.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a black-tie banquet at Kensington Palace in London on Thursday evening.

The event was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ARK (Absolute Return for Kids) charity, in association with the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry.

The royal foundation provides charitable grants by raising sustainable funds.

William and Kate were greeted by Arpad Busson, the co-founder of ARK, as photographers called out for Kate to look their way.

The royal couple chatted with guests before entering the huge marquee where the dinner was to be held.

UK media reported that guests at the dinner paid 10-thousand pounds (16-thousand US dollars) for each ticket.

Waves of drone and missile attacks targeted Kyiv overnight into Friday in the largest aerial attack since Russia’s war in Ukraine began, injuring 23 people and inflicting damage across multiple districts of the capital.

Russia launched 550 drones and missiles across Ukraine overnight, the country’s air force said.

The majority were Shahed drones, while Russia used 11 missiles in the attack.

Children take a dip in the sea along Khan Younis beach in the Gaza Strip to get some relief from the scorching summer time heat.

Their parents meanwhile worry about dwindling water supplies and the breakout of skin diseases as basic supplies, including food, remain scarce.

With no electricity and the majority of Gaza's population displaced in tented settlements along the coast, residents have little choice but to turn to the sea's cool waters for brief respite.

"The tent is absolutely unbearable, it’s hot like a fire because of the high temperature," said Abdul Rahman Abu Teir, a father of nine.

He said they spend every day running into the water to escape the heat. But the children have also developed skin rashes, he added.

The heat in Gaza has intensified hardships for its 2 million residents.

Reduced water availability, crippled sanitation networks and shrinking living spaces threaten to cause illnesses to cascade through communities, aid groups have long warned.

The scorching summer coincides with a lack of clean water for the majority of Gaza’s population, most of whom are displaced.

Gaza resident, Murad Qudeeh, who was displaced from Khan Younis, said there is no clean water for showering, causing skin ailments to spread.

Many Palestinians in the enclave must walk long distances to fetch water and ration each drop, limiting their ability to wash and keep cool.

Family and friends arrived Friday morning at a chapel near Porto in Portugal Friday where the bodies of Liverpool and Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota and his brother were taken.

Guests were seen talking to police outside the Capela Da Resurreicao in Gondomar ahead of a wake later today and funeral tomorrow.

Jota and his brother André Silva were killed in a car crash shortly after midnight on Thursday in northwestern Spain when the Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off a road and burst into flames, according to Spanish police.

Jota’s death comes weeks after he married Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. On getting married, she wrote in a social media post, “Yes to forever.” He leaves behind three children, the youngest born last year.

Taiwan’s Air Force decommissioned its F5 series fighter jets on Friday after the aircraft’s five decades of service, defending the island’s air space.

The F5 series was the fruit of cooperation that started in 1968 between the island’s government and Northrop, an American fighter jet builder.

A memorandum of understanding signed in 1973 kicked off the local assembly of Taiwan’s F5 series jets, under the supervision of Northrop staffers.

From 1973 to 1986, a total of 308 units were assembled in Taiwan.

The aircraft were gradually replaced by other fighter jet models which were acquired by Taiwan’s Air Force.

In recent years before its decommission, the aircraft were mostly used for reconnaissance and training.

STORYLINE:

Indonesian authorities intensified on Friday a search operation for 30 people missing after a ferry sank near the tourist island of Bali.

The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving Ketapang port in East Java late Wednesday for a trip of about 5 kilometers (3 miles) to Bali’s Gilimanuk port.

The search and rescue operation was halted Thursday evening due to visibility problems and resumed on Friday morning with more than 160 rescuers including police and soldiers, said Ribut Eko Suyatno, the deputy chief of operations at the National Search and Rescue Agency.

Three helicopters and a thermal drone were deployed to conduct an aerial search over the waters of the Bali Strait, while about 20 vessels were mobilized for the sea search, Suyatno said.

As weather forecasts predict high waves and rough waters around the Bali Strait on Friday, he said at least three navy ships were being deployed to replace small boats.

Videos and photos released by the agency showed rescuers looking desperately from rescue boats in the waters but no new survivors.

The agency released the names of 29 survivors and six people confirmed dead late Thursday. It didn’t release names of the missing, but according to the passenger manifest there were 30 people missing.

On Friday, survivors were being treated at Bali’s Jembrana Regional Hospital, while the bodies have been handed over to the families for funerals. Distraught relatives gathered at the port office in Gilimanuk, hoping for news of missing family members.

Indonesian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Survivors told rescuers there appeared to be a leak in the engine room of the ferry, which was carrying 22 vehicles including 14 trucks.

Ferry tragedies occur regularly in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, with weak enforcement of safety regulations often to blame.

Fifteen people were killed after a boat capsized off Indonesia’s Sulawesi in 2023, while another ferry sank in rough seas near Bali in 2021, leaving seven dead and 11 missing.

In 2018, an overcrowded ferry sank with about 200 people on board in a deep volcanic crater lake in North Sumatra province, killing 167 people.

In one of the country’s worst recorded disasters, an overcrowded passenger ship sank in February 1999 with 332 people aboard. There were only 20 survivors.

Popstar Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom have split, multiple media outlets reported Thursday.

Outlets including People and USA Today cited a statement that said the pair “have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting” and would continue to be seen in public with their daughter. The statement, attributed to representatives for both stars, said their priority would be raising their daughter with ”love, stability, and mutual respect.”

The statement came a week after reports of the couple's breakup swirled ahead of the wedding of billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, which Bloom attended alone. Perry has been on a world tour.

Representatives for Perry and Bloom did not immediately respond to The Associated Press’ request for comment.

Perry, 40, and Bloom, 48, have been romantically linked since 2016. The pair split in 2017 but rekindled shortly thereafter, getting engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2019, as Perry revealed during an interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

In 2020, the pair welcomed a daughter named Daisy Dove Bloom. Perry and Bloom got UNICEF to announce the news on its Instagram account. Both are goodwill ambassadors for the United Nations agency that helps children.

Bloom and his former wife, Australian model Miranda Kerr, have a son, Flynn, who was born in 2011. Daisy is Perry's only child.
