Their testimonies combined with videos, text messages and internal reports seen by the AP provide a rare glimpse into the workings of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the new, secretive American organization backed by Israel to provide food to the Gaza Strip's population. Journalists have been unable to access the sites which are located In Israeli military controlled zones. Since the GHF sites began operating about a month ago, Palestinians say Israeli troops fired nearly every day toward crowds on roads heading to the distribution points through Israeli military zones. Several hundred people have been killed and hundreds more wounded, according to Gaza's Health Ministry and witnesses. The military has repeatedly said it's fired only warning shots, denies deliberately firing towards civilians and says it's looking into reports of civilian harm. AP's reporting reveals what's actually happening on the sites themselves. The two contractors say their colleagues regularly used bullets, stun grenades and pepper spray on the sites. Videos that one contractor took during the first two weeks of distributions appear to back up the frenetic scenes they described. In some videos he filmed, men in gray uniforms, which he identified as his colleagues, can be seen dispensing tear gas and throwing stun grenades that land amid the crowd. The sound of gunfire can be heard. They can later be seen trying to clear Palestinians squeezed into a narrow, fenced-in passage leading to one of the centers. One photo shared by the contractor shows a woman lying in a donkey cart after he said she was hit in the head with part of a stun grenade. Another photo shows a Palestinian crying after the contractor says he was tear gassed in the face. To confirm the footage is from the sites, the AP geolocated the videos using aerial imagery."

STORYLINE:

The director of the Indonesian Hospital, Dr. Marwan al-Sultan, was killed in an apartment in an Israeli strike west of Gaza City, a hospital statement said.

The hospital is the Palestinian enclave’s largest medical facility north of Gaza City and has been a critical lifeline since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

The hospital was surrounded by Israeli troops last month, and evacuated alongside the other two primary hospitals in northern Gaza.

The bodies of the doctor, his wife, daughter and son-in-law, arrived at Shifa Hospital torn into pieces, according to Issam Nabhan, head of the nursing department at the Indonesian Hospital.

The doctor's daughter, Lubna al-Sultan, said "an F-16 missile targeted his room exactly, right where he was, directly on him."

“All the rooms in the house were intact except for his room, which was hit by the missile. My father was martyred in it,” she told the Associated Press.

Gaza's Health Ministry said the death toll passed the 57,000 mark Tuesday into Wednesday, after hospitals received 142 bodies overnight.

The ministry doesn't differentiate between civilians and combatants in its death count, but says that more than half of the dead are women and children.

STORYLINE:

Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday in the brutal stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students in 2022 that terrified the campus and set off a nationwide search, which ended weeks later when he was arrested in Pennsylvania.

Kohberger, who was a criminal justice graduate student at nearby Washington State University, admitted to the killings before entering a formal guilty plea in a deal with prosecutors that allows him to avoid the death penalty, though the motive remains unclear. He had been set to go to trial in August.

The small farming community of Moscow, in the northern Idaho panhandle, had not seen a homicide in about five years when Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen were found dead at a rental home near campus on Nov. 13, 2022. Autopsies showed each was stabbed multiple times and some had defensive wounds.

Kohberger first killed Mogen and Goncalves together and then ran into Kernodle, who was still awake, Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson said at the hearing Wednesday. He then stabbed Kernodle and her boyfriend, Chapin, who was still asleep, Thompson said. There were no signs of sexual assault, he said.

Family members became increasingly emotional as Idaho Fourth Judicial District Judge Steven Hippler explained each charge to Kohberger, naming each victim individually. Some cried into tissues, while other wiped tears with their hands. Kohberger remained impassive as he confirmed to the judge that he stabbed the four victims.

As he pleaded guilty, some in the family section looked down and others craned to see him.

STORYLINE:

The FBI announced its plans to move its headquarters several blocks from its current home.

The Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. has been selected as the new headquarters after a yearslong back-and-forth on where the federal law enforcement agency should be housed.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the move was “an historic moment for the FBI.”

The bureau has called the J. Edgar Hoover Building home since 1975 – when it was dedicated to their famous first director.

But proponents for the move say the decades old Brutalist-style building is falling into disrepair – with nets surrounding the facility to protect pedestrians from falling debris.

It’s not clear when the move will take place, or what sort of logistical hurdles may need to be cleared to accomplish it.

"Lo que nos enseñaron es que cuando sales para tu primera cosecha, coges ese fruto, tu primer fruto, le abres, te bendices, te lo pones en la frente, te pones un poco en el corazón, y pruebas ese primer sabor de ese fruto que ha salido para la temporada”, dijo esta cosechadora. “Y sólo dices gracias y muestras respeto al saguaro”.

 

Los miembros de la Nación O'odham consideran que los cactus saguaro son personas.

"Son ancianos, son humanos para nosotros”, dijo. “Sentimos que si no estamos aquí para celebrarlos y cosecharlos quizá les pase algo”.

 

A finales de junio, Tanisha Tucker y su prima María Francisco salieron de su campamento en el desierto del Parque Nacional Saguaro Oeste en busca de frutos maduros del cactus saguaro.

 

La recolección, que dura semanas, refuerza los vínculos con el Creador, el entorno natural y la comunidad O'odham a través de las generaciones.

 

Estos cactus empiezan a dar fruto a los 30 años, brotan sus brazos a los 75 y viven hasta 200 años. 

 

Los saguaros son muy altos y la mayor parte de los frutos están en la parte superior por eso se recogen con una larga vara llamada k'uipud, hecha de costillas de saguaro, dijo Francisco.

 

Después de la cosecha, los recolectores alaban al Creador, que según la creencia, reside en el pico de una montaña cercana, el Baboquivari.

“Este es el año nuevo”, dijo Francisco. “Después de la cosecha del ‘bahidaj’, hay una ceremonia del vino, y eso es para traer la lluvia".

 

Para la ceremonia Nawait I’i, hacen el vino cortando el fruto para ponerlo a hervir en agua, después se cuela dos veces y se vuelve a poner en el fuego.

 

Por último, se mezcla un poco de almíbar con agua y se deja fermentar.

 

Para muchos indígenas estadounidenses, la pérdida de acceso a la tierra, a los ciclos naturales de la agricultura y a los alimentos locales ha causado un aumento desproporcionado de diabetes, alcoholismo y otras enfermedades.

 

Para muchas familias, este es el momento de reunirse entre generaciones para transmitir tradiciones y conocimientos a los mas jóvenes.
