At some 887 pages, President Trump's tax and spending cuts package is a sprawling collection of tax breaks, spending cuts and other Republican priorities, including new money for national defense and deportations.

The bill would extend and make permanent various individual and business tax breaks Republicans passed in Trump’s first term, plus temporarily add new tax breaks, such as no income taxes on tips and overtime.

It would also include new 80-hour-a-month work requirements for many adults receiving Medicaid and applies existing work requirements in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to more beneficiaries.

States with less resources like Louisiana may be forced to pick up more of the cost for food benefits.

Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday in the brutal stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students in 2022 that terrified the campus and set off a nationwide search, which ended weeks later when he was arrested in Pennsylvania.

Kohberger, who was a criminal justice graduate student at nearby Washington State University, admitted to the killings before entering a formal guilty plea in a deal with prosecutors that allows him to avoid the death penalty, though the motive remains unclear. He had been set to go to trial in August.

The small farming community of Moscow, in the northern Idaho panhandle, had not seen a homicide in about five years when Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen were found dead at a rental home near campus on Nov. 13, 2022. Autopsies showed each was stabbed multiple times and some had defensive wounds.

Kohberger first killed Mogen and Goncalves together and then ran into Kernodle, who was still awake, Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson said at the hearing Wednesday. He then stabbed Kernodle and her boyfriend, Chapin, who was still asleep, Thompson said. There were no signs of sexual assault, he said.

STORYLINE:

Wildfires in southern Turkey fuelled by an extreme heat wave were partially under control, local authorities said on Wednesday.

Flames have ravaged parts of Hatay province, threatening homes and leaving behind large swathes of charred forest.

Over 1,400 people were protectively evacuated from the area, according to the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, while a seperate blaze in the west of the country briefly forced the closure of the airport in Izmir.

Hatay authorities warned of “extreme heat” in the coming week and that residents should be on alert through October 15 due to meteorological conditions.

The province is no stranger to disaster: it was also the worst hit in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on Feb. 6, 2023.

Along with a second powerful tremor that came hours later, the temblors destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern Turkish provinces, leaving more than 53,000 people dead.

STORYLINE:

Sean “Diddy" Combs has been convicted of prostitution-related offenses but acquitted on the most serious charges at his New York trial on Wednesday.

The mixed result could still put Combs behind bars for up to a decade.

Combs was convicted of transporting people across state lines for the purpose of engaging in prostitution.

But the jury acquitted him of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, which were related to allegations that he forced girlfriends into hundreds of drug-fueled sex marathons with other men. His lawyers said the women were willing participants.

After hearing the verdict, Combs held his hands up in a prayer motion, looking at jury and hugged defense lawyer Teny Geragos. Combs' relatives and supporters in the audience could barely contain their relief, despite the judge's admonition to avoid outbursts: When the first “not guilty” was read aloud, someone shouted, “Yeah!”

Combs later continued to pump his right fist subtly, seemingly satisfied that he was acquitted on the most serious charges.

Combs kneeled at his chair, his head bowed in prayer, as court adjourned.

STORYLINE:

Animals at Paris Zoo were fed frozen treats Wednesday as a heatwave sent temperatures soaring across France.

With temperatures rising beyond 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) in the French capital for the third day in a row, zookeepers provided the animals with frozen food in an effort to beat the heat and provide some immediate comfort.

On the menu were blood popsicles for the lions, and watermelon ones for the giraffes.

"It's like you eating an ice cream - it will be nice for you for like 20 minutes and we provide it to them. But the most important thing we have to provide to them is a good environment matching with their biological needs," said Alexis Lecu, Paris Zoo's chief vet.
