STORYLINE:

Residents in the German city of Cologne used public water sprinklers to cool off amid a heatwave in the region.

Temperatures there soared to 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) on Wednesday.

To help keep residents cool in the summer, Cologne's local government had teamed up with local energy and water supplier RheinEnergie to provide the sprinklers as part of the "Cooling Cologne" campaign.

Stands offering information on the heatwave and free drinking water stations were also dotted around the city.

The heatwave had sent thermometers soaring across large areas of Europe and set record high temperatures for June in Spain and Portugal.

STORYLINE:

A homeless shelter in Berlin warned Wednesday that the city's homeless population is "extremely vulnerable" as summer temperatures soared in the German capital.

Barbara Breuer, a spokesperson from the Berlin City Mission, said homeless people were at risk of dying from heat exhaustion if sleeping in the sun.

Temperatures reached over 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in Berlin on Wednesday.

“Most of the problems are simply (from) going out because you sweat all the time, your shoes get sweaty when you walk around a lot," said Agres, a 36-year-old homeless man who has slept on the streets since 2020.

The Berlin City Mission, run by the Protestant church, operates a day center where poor and homeless people can take a shower and buy a cheap meal. It caters to up to 120 people per day.

"If these things didn't exist, it would be very, very bad, because you need almost everything," Agres added.

A lingering heat wave has roasted much of Europe, leading authorities to raise warnings and tourists to find ways to beat the heat.

Hamás dijo el miércoles que estaba abierto a un acuerdo de alto al fuego con Israel, insistiendo en que cualquier acuerdo debe poner fin a la guerra en Gaza.

 

El martes, el presidente Donald Trump declaró que Israel había acordado los términos para un alto el fuego de 60 días en Gaza e instó a Hamás a aceptar el acuerdo antes de que las condiciones empeoren. 

 

Trump dijo que los 60 días se utilizarían para trabajar hacia el fin de la guerra, algo que Israel dice que no aceptará hasta que Hamás sea derrotado. Dijo que un acuerdo podría concretarse tan pronto como la próxima semana.

STORYLINE:

A judge has declined to grant bail for Sean “Diddy” Combs. That could allow the hip hop mogul to be freed to await sentencing in his sex crimes case.

Combs was convicted Wednesday of federal prostitution-related offenses but acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges.

The 55-year-old Combs has been behind bars since his arrest in September.

He stands convicted of two counts of a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. But the jury cleared him of charges that could have put him behind bars for life.

STORYLINE:

Croatia was hit by a sweltering heat wave on Wednesday, with many areas experiencing temperatures soaring well past 36 degrees Celsius, including the country's Adriatic seaside.

The squares and street-side cafes and restaurants in the historic city of Pula in western Croatia, normally bustling this time of year which marks the beginning of peak tourist season, were largely empty on Wednesday, as very few holidaymakers and visitors braved the scorching heat to explore the ancient Roman ruins and seaside walkways.

Paul Prescot, British photographer living in Pula, said "When you exit the air-con and go outside it’s like a real hit in the head.”

The entire northern Adriatic region was under health alerts issued by the state weather service DHMZ, which advised the public to avoid outdoor activities.

Even so, some have sought respite at some of the town’s beaches, in spite of sea temperatures also unusually warm, at around 28 degrees Celsius – 3 to 4 degrees above the usual readings.

Entire swathes of Europe have been baking in unusually hot summer heat over the past several days, causing closures of schools, public services, and popular tourist attractions, with health warnings urging people to avoid spending time outdoors.

Sean “Diddy Combs was convicted of a prostitution-related offense but acquitted Wednesday of sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have put one of hip-hop’s most celebrated figures behind bars for life.

The mixed result came on the third day of deliberations in New York. It could still send Combs to prison for as long as a decade.

The rapper was convicted of flying people around the country, including his girlfriends and paid male sex workers, to engage in sexual encounters, a felony violation of the federal Mann Act.

But the jury of eight men and four women acquitted Combs of racketeering, conspiracy and sex trafficking charges.

Combs and his defense team argued that the women were willing participants.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of Hindu devotees began their journey Wednesday for an annual pilgrimage through the high Himalayas in Indian-controlled Kashmir amid heavy security in the Muslim-majority region.

The pilgrimage starts Thursday with visitors heading to the revered Amarnath cave shrine to worship a naturally formed stalagmite believed to be the incarnation of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration.

Vishnu Kumar, a devotee in Jammu said, “Every year I feel very happy to come here. This is a befitting response to the Pahalgam attack. Our Hindustan (India) stands united.”

Massive security arrangements have been made for the more than a monthlong pilgrimage, which is taking place after the recent killing of tourists at a resort in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

On April 22, gunmen massacred 26 people, most of them Hindu tourists, in one of the deadliest assaults in years targeting civilians in the restive region claimed by both India and Pakistan.

India blames Pakistan for backing the gunmen behind the killings. Islamabad denies the accusation.

Tens of thousands of police and soldiers have been deployed to guard the pilgrimage with checkpoints and barricades and along the routes leading to the cave.

The cave, at 13,500 feet (4,115 meters) above sea level, is covered with snow most of the year except for a short period in summer when it is open for the pilgrims.
