STORYLINE:

A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Russian leader and French President Emmanuel Macron exchanged views on the Ukrainian conflict in detail over the telephone.

Dmitry Peskov told journalists during a conference call on Wednesday that "it was a good opportunity to communicate each other’s positions."

It was the first direct call between the Russian and French leaders in almost three years. Peskov said the call was initiated by the French and lasted more than two hours.

Macron’s office said that the French leader underlined his country's “unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and called for a ceasefire.

Peskov also said the suspension of some arms supplies to Ukraine from the U.S. would bring about the end of Russia's fighting in Ukraine sooner.

“As far as we understand, the reason for this decision was empty depots, a shortage of weapons in storage," Peskov told reporters. "In any case, the fewer weapons are supplied to Ukraine, the closer the end of the special military operation is."

During the conference call, Peskov accused Ukraine of fueling a spat between Russia and Azerbaijan.

STORYLINE:

The White House has withdrawn the nomination of Dr. David Weldon, a former Florida congressman, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Senate health committee announced Thursday morning that it was canceling a planned hearing on Weldon's nomination because of the withdrawal.

A person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said the White House pulled the nomination because it became clear Weldon did not have the votes for confirmation.

Weldon was considered to be closely aligned with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. health secretary who for years has been one of the nation’s leading anti-vaccine activists.

A former Florida congressman, Weldon also has been a prominent critic of vaccines and the CDC, which promotes vaccines and monitors their safety.

Sen. Patty Murray said she had serious concerns about Weldon after meeting with him.

“I was deeply disturbed to hear Dr. Weldon repeat debunked claims about vaccines,” the Washington Democrat said in a statement. “It’s dangerous to put someone in charge at CDC who believes the lie that our rigorously tested childhood vaccine schedule is somehow exposing kids to toxic levels of mercury or causing autism.

Weldon becomes the third Trump administration nominee who didn’t make it to a confirmation hearing.

STORYLINE:

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Wednesday said the centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist institution will continue after his death, ending years of speculation that started when he indicated that he might be the last person to hold the role.

Speaking at prayer celebrations ahead of his 90th birthday on Sunday, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism said that the next Dalai Lama should be found and recognized as per past Buddhist traditions, while signalling that China should stay away from the process of identifying his successor.

"I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue,” he said.

The Dalai Lama’s succession plan is politically consequential for most Tibetans who oppose China’s tight control of Tibet and have struggled to keep their identity alive, in their homeland or in exile.

It is also profound for Tibetan Buddhists who worship him as a living manifestation of Chenrezig, the Buddhist god of compassion.

The decision, however, is expected to irk China, which has repeatedly said that it alone has the authority to approve the next religious leader.

It insists the reincarnated figure must be found in China’s Tibetan areas, giving Communist authorities power over who is chosen.

Many observers believe there eventually will be rival Dalai Lamas — one appointed by Beijing, and one by senior monks loyal to the current Dalai Lama.

Tenzin Gyatso became the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama in 1940.

He fled Tibet when Chinese troops crushed an uprising in the Tibetan capital Lhasa in 1959 and has been living in the town of Dharamshala in India since then, helping establish a democratic government-in-exile while also traveling the world to advocate autonomy for the Tibetan people.

It comes ahead of a summit in China later in July to mark 50 years of ties with the bloc.

The EU-China economic ties are hefty: bilateral trade is estimated at 2.3 billion euros ($2.7 billion) per day.

China is the EU’s second largest trading partner in goods, after the United States.

Both China and the EU believe it is in their interest to keep their trade ties stable for the sake of the global economy, and they share certain climate goals.

The cabinet composed of Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and Republicans was formed last week and it is expected that both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies will bring it down in a vote of no confidence on Saturday after debating on the issue. Vice-Premier Ugo La Malfa died this week and his funeral took place yesterday: political experts have said that LA MAlfa's death weakened even more the chances of the Andreotti government gaining a vote of confidence. If the government falls, as is expected, it is thought that early elections will be set for June 10th, the same date as the European parliament elections
