Peering across a dense stretch of woodland outside of Denmark's capital with camouflage paint smeared across her face, 20-year-old Katrine scans the horizon for approaching threats.

After nearly four months of military training, the young soldier and the rest of her unit spent early June completing their final exercises near the Danish army’s barracks in Hovelte, 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of Copenhagen.

Katrine and other female soldiers, all of whom spoke to The Associated Press on June 11 on the condition that only their first names be used because of operational security, volunteered for military service earlier this year.

Until now, that was the only way women were allowed to partake in military service, although women have been able to enlist as full-time members of the armed forces since the early 1970s.

The Scandinavian country is seeking to increase the number of young people in the military by extending compulsory enlistment to women for the first time. Men and women can both still volunteer, and the remaining places will be filled by a gender-neutral draft lottery.

“In the situation the world is in now, it’s needed,” Katrine said. “I think it’s only fair and right that women participate equally with men.”

Under new rules passed by Denmark’s parliament earlier in June, Danish women who turn 18 after Tuesday will be entered into the lottery system, on an equal footing with their male compatriots.

The change comes against a backdrop of Russian aggression and growing military investment across NATO countries. Russia's looming threat.

Even from the relative safety of Denmark, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine casts its shadow. Lessons from the Ukrainian battlefields have even filtered down into their training.

“That makes it very real,” Katrine said.

Denmark's gender-parity reforms were originally outlined in 2024 as part of a major defense agreement.

Colombia's capital was alive with music and dancing on Sunday as the annual Pride parade took over the streets of Bogota.

In the crowds gathered, rainbow flags and banners with messages such as "There's nothing to cure" could be seen above the sea of colorful costumes.

"No matter our orientation, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, we are always marked and stigmatized due to our orientation, by our preferences, by our style, by our way of being," said Felipe Romero, a stage artist who participated in Sunday's parade.

Some also marched with posters to raise awareness of violence against transgender people.

In the Andean country, the increase in crimes against members of the LGBTIQ+ population has generated an alert from the Attorney General's Office, which on Saturday reported 46 murders so far in 2025 and 3,769 threats in recent years.

In April, the case of Sara Millerey, a 32-year-old trans woman who was brutally tortured and abandoned in a stream, caused a stir. This incident was used as an emblem to push for the passage of a transgender integrity law currently being processed in the legislature.

His supporters waved Brazilian flags and chanted slogans attacking the Supreme Court, criticizing the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and defending Bolsonaro, who remains the central figure for Brazil’s conservative movement.

Bolsonaro and 33 allies are facing trial over an alleged plot to overturn the 2022 presidential election results and remain in power.

The monthlong celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride reached its rainbow-laden crescendo Sunday as huge crowds took part in jubilant, daylong street parties from New York to San Francisco.

Pride celebrations typically weave politics and protest alongside the colorful pageantry, but this year’s iterations took a decidedly more defiant stance as Republicans, led by President Donald Trump, have sought to roll back LGBTQ+ friendly policies.

The theme of the festivities in Manhattan was, appropriately, “Rise Up: Pride in Protest.” San Francisco’s Pride theme was “Queer Joy is Resistance,” while Seattle was simply “Louder.”

Lance Brammer, a 56-year-old teacher from Ohio attending his first Pride parade in New York, said he felt “validated” as he marveled at the sheer size of the city’s celebration, the nation’s oldest and largest.

“With the climate that we have politically, it just seems like they’re trying to do away with the whole LGBTQ community, especially the trans community,” he said wearing a vivid, multicolored shirt.

“And it just shows that they’ve got a fight ahead of them if they think that they’re going to do that with all of these people here and all of the support.”

Another participant held up a sign saying, “Please don’t lose hope” in support of friends she said couldn’t attend Sunday.

Manhattan’s parade wound its way down Fifth Avenue with more than 700 participating groups greeted by huge crowds.

The rolling celebration passed the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village gay bar where a 1969 police raid triggered protests and fired up the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

The site is now a national monument. The first pride march was held in New York City in 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

Thousand of protesters gathered in front of the Georgian parliament on Sunday to mark the beginning of the seventh month of non-stop protests calling for new parliamentary elections and the release of prisoners arrested during a government crackdown on protesters and political opponents.

Nearly all leaders of Georgia’s pro-Western opposition are now behind bars, as protests continue against the ruling Georgian Dream party and its decision last year to halt Georgia’s bid to join the European Union.

The demonstrators, who gather daily in the capital Tbilisi, also claim that the vote on October 26 that handed Georgian Dream another term in power was not free or fair.

Seven opposition figures were jailed for refusing to testify in an official inquiry investigating alleged wrongdoings by the government of ex-President Mikhail Saakashvili. Georgian Dream’s critics call it an act of political revenge.

Opposition politicians have declined to attend the commission hearings, citing their ongoing boycott of parliament following the October 26 election.

Georgian Dream’s critics say the vote was rigged with Russia’s help to hand it another term in power.

More than 50 people were imprisoned on criminal charges during the violent crackdown on mass rallies that was sparked by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's decision to halt EU accession talks.

The political turmoil follows a parliamentary election that was won by the ruling Georgian Dream party, although its opponents allege the vote was rigged.

Sheep competed for prizes Sunday at one of Senegal's regularly held sheep pageants.

One of the stars of the show in Guediawaye, on the outskirts of Dakar, was Niang Ballo.

Niang Ballo is a Ladoum sheep, a specialized breed from Senegal which is bred for its height and strong features and his owner, Mohamed Wane, claims he’s the most decorated sheep in Senegal.

Niang Ballo has won six titles, beginning when he was a lamb.

“Based on measurements and aesthetics, because there are aesthetic criteria, like the curvature of the head, the length of the tail, the symmetry of the horns, etc., the hair – after that they determine who comes first according to a very, very, let's say, scrutinized scale, because there's a jury each time,” he said.

A sheep getting a title at one of these pageants, where there are separate categories for male and female sheep and adults and junior sheep, increases the value of its bloodline.

Ladoum breeders are acutely aware of their sheep’s lineage, from both the mother’s and father’s side.
