STORYLINE:

After days of blistering heat, the nation's sweaty East Coast got to open windows, go outside and take a deep breath of relatively cool, but temporary, relief on Friday. Triple digit temperatures plummeted as much as 40 degrees, with humidity dropping alongside.

At least 68 high temperature records were set and more than 20 places logged triple digit heat from Sunday through Wednesday, but by Friday a back door cold front from the north broke the strong grip a heat dome had on the region. Boston which set a record of 102 on Tuesday was down to 61 Friday morning.

That blast of cool comfort brought temperatures that were as much as 10 to 15 degrees below normal summer temperatures, but they didn't come close to breaking cold records, said Frank Pereira, meteorologist at the Nation... [truncated]

STORYLINE:

Relatives on Friday were mourning for loved ones killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza Strip.

The bodies of the dead were brought to Shifa hospital in Gaza City after two strikes in Jabaliya and one in Gaza City.

Eight people were killed in a strike on a school in Jabaliya and two were killed in a separate strike in Jabaliya, said Shifa hospital, which received the bodies.

One person was killed in the strike in Gaza City, the hospital said.

The war was sparked by Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 others hostage.

Many have been released by ceasefire or other agreements.

Gaza's Health Ministry has said Israel’s military operation in Gaza has killed more than 56,000 people.

The ministry says women and children make up more than half of the dead. It does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The death toll is by far the highest in any round of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.

Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, which operates in heavily populated areas.

Israel says over 20,000 Hamas militants have been killed, though it has provided no evidence to support that claim.

Hamas has not commented on its casualties.

The wedding has divided Venice, with some activists protesting it as an exploitation of the city by Bezos while ordinary residents suffer from overtourism, high housing costs and the constant threat of climate-induced flooding.

At least eight people are dead after flash floods triggered by pre-monsoon rains swept away dozens of tourists in northwest Pakistan on Friday.

The nationwide death toll from rain-related incidents rose to 18 over the past 24 hours, officials said.

Nearly 100 rescuers in various groups rescued a total of 58 people and were searching for the missing tourists who were swept away while picnicking along the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Shah Fahad, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service.

Rescue operations are ongoing in five areas of the upper Swat Valley, according to Muhammad Saad Khan, the district officer for Rescue 1122, a government rescue organization.

Elsewhere, at least 10 people were killed in rain-related incidents in eastern Punjab and southern Sindh provinces over the past 24 hours, according to rescue officials.

Weather forecasters say rains will continue this week.

Pakistan’s annual monsoon season runs from July through September.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his deep sorrow and grief over the deaths of the tourists in the Swat River.

Heavy rains have battered parts of Pakistan since earlier this week, blocking highways and damaging homes.

Still, weather forecasters say the country will receive less rain compared with 2022 when the climate-induced downpour swelled rivers and inundated one-third of Pakistan at one point, killing 1,739.
