“That’s the first night that we will spend here, because actually we’re not sleeping, because of the anxiety and because of the sirens that are happening during the nights, it’s very scary to run every time to the shelter, there was a morning I fell down on the street while running to the shelter, so yes, I decided that better to stay you know during the night try to sleep, and to have a rest a little bit here in a safe space.”

    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Aziza Melech, resident: ++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT AND IS OVERLAID BY SHOT6++
“We need to survive, and I think I have never felt something like this, that’s why we decided to go to sleep here to feel that I will be safe during the night, that I can sleep.“
    6. People coming down escalator to underground metro station seeking shelter
    STORYLINE:
When Israel’s sparkling new light rail system opened less than two years ago, few could have imagined that hundreds of people would use the underground stations as makeshift shelters, sleeping multiple nights in the brightly-lit stations to hide from Iranian missiles.
But over the past few nights, families with young kids, foreign workers, and young professionals have brought mattresses and sleeping bags, snacks and pets into the train station, fluffed their pillows and settled in for the night.
In one station on the border of Tel Aviv and the city of Ramat Gan, around 200 people gathered just after sunset. Some brought tablets loaded with movies and homemade popcorn.
Families claimed corners for themselves, snuggling up with dogs and introducing themselves to their temporary neighbors.
Many elderly people with difficulty moving quickly arrived, with family members or aides.
As Aziza Melech, 34, sat on her inflatable mattress with her best friend, she said she felt her body relax for the first time in days.
It was their first night sleeping in the train station, on the lowest level possible, and she finally felt safe. The next few hours, at least, she wouldn’t need to run to a safe location during the sirens.
“We’re not sleeping, because of the anxiety and because of the sirens that are happening during the nights, it’s very scary to run every time to the shelter,” said her friend Sonia Shraibmen.
That morning, Shraibmen fell on the street while running to a nearby shelter, and decided to move somewhere where she wouldn’t have to get up and run each time her phone blared.
The conflict between Israel and Iran began on June 13.
Iranian strikes have killed 24 people and injured hundreds in Israel.

    STORYLINE:
Juneteenth celebrations unfolded across the U.S. on Thursday, marking the day in 1865 when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Texas and attracting participants who said current events strengthened their resolve to be heard.
The holiday has been celebrated by Black Americans for generations, but became more widely observed after being designated a federal holiday in 2021 by former President Joe Biden, who attended a Juneteenth event at a church in Galveston, Texas, the holiday's birthplace.
Biden said he was proud to sign the law making Juneteenth.
“Some say to me and you that this doesn't deserve to be a federal holiday. They don't want to remember what we all remember, the moral stain of slavery,” he said.
The celebrations come as President Donald Trump’s administration has worked to ban diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI, in the federal government and remove content about Black American history from federal websites. Trump’s travel ban on visitors from select countries has also led to bitter national debate.
The event Thursday was held at the Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Galveston.
That church, the first and oldest operating AME church in the state, is one of the locations where an order announcing the end of slavery in Texas was announced on that day in 1865, according to the Galveston County Daily News.

  • Erick weakens after landfall in southern Mexico as a Category 3 hurricane

    STORYLINE:
Powerful Hurricane Erick made landfall in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca early Thursday as a major hurricane before moving inland and weakening to a tropical storm as it dumped heavy rain, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
The hurricane’s center was located about 35 miles (60 kilometers) north-northeast of Acapulco Thursday afternoon. Its maximum sustained winds were clocked at 50 mph (85 kph). It was moving northwest at 12 mph (19 kph), the hurricane center said.
The storm was downgraded slightly before making landfall, from a powerful Category 4 to a Category 3.
The storm threaded the needle between the resorts of Acapulco and Puerto Escondido, tearing into a sparsely populated stretch of coastline near the border of Oaxaca and Guerrero states.
Erick weakened rapidly as it crashed into the coastal mountains of southern Mexico, and the system is likely to dissipate late Thursday or early Friday, the hurricane center said.
At first light Thursday, Acapulco awoke under ominous dark clouds. Rain started later in the morning with the arrival of stronger winds. There was light traffic in the streets.
However, the storm moved northwest just inland up the coast through midday, bringing heavy rain to the resort and the mountains that tower dramatically above it.
Still, it appeared Acapulco had dodged the worst at least in terms of Erick’s strong winds.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday “the people have reacted very well so far.”
    No injuries have been reported.

Juneteenth is recognized at least as an observance in every state, and nearly 30 states and Washington, D.C., have designated it as a permanent paid or legal holiday through legislation or executive action.

That's what we do here at the Weizmann Institute, and I hope there will come a day where we'll be able to do it together with Iranian scientists.”
    6. Pan from standing building to building in ruins
    STORYLINE:
For years, Israel has targeted Iranian nuclear scientists, hoping to choke progress on Iran’s nuclear program by striking at the brains behind it.
Now, with Iran and Israel in an open-ended direct conflict, scientists in Israel have found themselves in the crosshairs after an Iranian missile struck a premier research institute known for its work in life sciences and physics, among other fields.
While no one was killed in the strike on the Weizmann Institute of Science early Sunday, it caused heavy damage to multiple labs on campus, snuffing out years of scientific research and sending a chilling message to Israeli scientists that they and their expertise are now targets in the escalating conflict with Iran.
Roee Ozeri, Vice President of Development and Communication at the Weizmann Institute, said around 50 buildings at the complex were damaged in some way.
"But out of those 50, only three more on top of the two that were directly it, were seriously damaged," he told The Associated Press.
In the long period of a shadow war between Israel and Iran that preceded the current conflict, Israel repeatedly targeted Iranian nuclear scientists with the aim of setting back Iran’s nuclear program.
Israel continued that tactic with its initial blow against Iran days ago, killing multiple nuclear scientists, along with top generals, as well as striking nuclear facilities and ballistic missile infrastructure.
While it is a multidisciplinary research institute, Weizmann, like other Israeli universities, has ties to Israel’s defense establishment, including collaborations with industry leaders like Elbit Systems, which is why it may have been targeted.
Weizmann, founded in 1934 and later renamed after Israel's first president, ranks among the world's top research... [truncated]

“We get food from the markets and whatever is available from the markets, from the stalls, and from the vendors, as there is little food available in the markets, and what comes in through American aid or international aid, we buy it from some of those who get food, so that we can cook the food and feed the people.”

“Life is very difficult. A person only eats one meal a day because of the suffocating siege and there is no way to buy some necessities because they are expensive and unavailable. The aid that comes through the American and Israeli committees - getting it is very dangerous. A person might not return to his children and might return dead.”

    STORYLINE:
Thousands of desperate displaced people received hot soup meals on Thursday from a charity that provides basic food daily in Deir al-Balah, in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinians across the Gaza Strip have become increasingly desperate as nearly three months of Israeli border closures have pushed the territory to the brink of famine.
Al-Saada (Happiness) Kitchen, or Takiet Al-Saada, is located in a displaced persons' tent area that houses about 20,000 displaced people.
The charity kitchen tries to provide everyone with daily soup meals, but there is not enough food to fill the pans and pots of hundreds of desperate hungry people.
The owner of al-Saada charity Kitchen, Saad Abdeen said that about 15,000 people come to them every day, but not everyone gets food.
''Some get barely one meal, and some don't get any at all,'' he said.
Israel and the United States say the new aid system is intended to replace a U.N.-run network that has distributed aid across Gaza through 20 months of war.
Since the war began on October 2023, a total of 55,637 people have been killed and nearly 130,000 others were injured, the ministry added.
The toll includes 5,334 people who been killed and more than 17,000 wounded since the ceasefire collapsed three months ago.
