  • IACHR requests details of attack against Colombian senator

    Bogotá, Colombia - 19 June 2025
    1. Various of people entering hospital where Senator Miguel Uribe is hospitalized
    2. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Victor Mosquera, Miguel Uribe's family lawyer:
"The IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) has requested
urgent information from the Colombian state to establish what Miguel's current security situation is (Senator), what security has been provided to his family, and what measures have been implemented since this criminal act. Above all, they are asking why Miguel did not have adequate security at the time of this ruinous event."
    3. Various of people carrying religious figures and dolls in front of hospital
    4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Maria Claudia Tarazona, wife of Senator Miguel
    Uribe:
"And from the bottom of my heart, I am deeply grateful for this titanic effort you have made to keep Miguel alive, for the love of Colombians, for the love of all people in different corners of the world, for the love of you who have been by our side, accompanying us, for the people who come to pray for our family and dearest friends. Today we can say that Miguel has the strength to continue fighting. Thank you very much. Thank you, and please don't forget to keep praying, keep praying, send all your good energy, all your words of encouragement and love. We receive them in our hearts, and remember that love keeps him alive."
    5. Various of a mass for senator Miguel Uribe's recovery in downtown Bogotá
    STORYLINE:
The lawyer of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, who was shot in the head earlier in June, said the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had requested information about the attack and his security.
Lawyer Victor Mosquera said he received a letter from the IACHR in which the regional organization requested precautionary measures to the Colombian government to ensure Uribe's security.
Mosquera said the letter also asks how Uribe's security failed to prevent the attack.
Maria Claudia Tarazona, the wife of Uribe, thanked supporters who had prayed for his health and said he "has the strength to continue fighting."
Uribe, a conservative presidential hopeful, was shot earlier in the month as he addressed a small crowd of people who had gathered at a park in Bogota’s Modelia neighborhood.
The Associated Press requested information from the IACHR regarding the petition.
The family had already made a complaint against the National Protection Unit, which they claim failed to comply with 23 requests to provide him with a larger security team.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro also said that the number of bodyguards was "strangely" reduced from seven to three on the day of the attack.
Since the attack took place, the government has assigned more protection to opposition precandidates who are campaigning for the 2026 presidential elections.

    1. SOUNDBITE (English) JerriAnne Boggis, Executive Director, Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire:
“We're here in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, at the African Burying Ground Memorial site. And this is no normal burial ground. As you can see, we're on an ordinary street in an ordinary town. So the African burying ground was built over, covered on, erased from memory.”

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) JerriAnne Boggis, Executive Director, Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire:
“But we're looking at the same kind of issues today. As we think about the erasure of Black history, we think of the desire of some to not honor this holiday. And right here in New Hampshire, we have laws that tell us we can't teach this history in our schools. So the Black Heritage Trail is working to raise awareness for these stories. In order to bring people together who are more inclusion, building that, building those bridges for conversation between all of us. Because American history, Black history, is all of our history.”

    STORYLINE:
The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire’s weekslong celebration culminated with the rededication of the African Burying Ground Memorial Park in Portsmouth and a community dance. But those who planned the history tours, community discussions and other events to commemorate June 19, 1865 — the day Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Texas — also were looking ahead to next year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Executive Director JerriAnne Boggis said her organization and other partners want to highlight contradictions in the familiar narratives about the nation’s founding fathers.
“In a time when efforts to suppress Black history are on the rise, and by extension, to suppress American history, we stand firm in the truth," said JerriAnne Boggis, the Heritage Trail’s executive director. "This is not just Black history, it is all of our history,”
During his first administration, Trump issued statements each June 19, including one that ended with “On Juneteenth 2017, we honor the countless contributions made by African Americans to our Nation and pledge to support America’s promise as the land of the free.”

    10. Wide of carpet
    STORYLINE:
Brazilian Catholic worshippers laid down an eco-friendly carpet in front of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, calling for the protection of the environment as the country prepares to host UN climate talks in the Amazon.
Tapestries are a fixture of Corpus Christi, a religious feast celebrated by Catholics, who believe it marks the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
This year, the colorful carpet was made from approximately 460 kilos ( (1,014 pounds) of recycled plastic caps.
Over the past few years, the sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer has increasingly used the attention the iconic statue generates to spotlight environmental concerns.
''These caps could have been polluting our environment, but we crushed them and used them in the Corpus Christi carpet," said Marcos Martins, environmental manager and educator at the sanctuary.
Just after daybreak and before the first flock of tourists arrived, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta led celebrations at the site overlooking Guanabara Bay and Rio’s famed Sugarloaf mountain.
The caps are “a good reminder of our co-responsibility with ecology, of our concern for the environment, which are very characteristic of Christ the Redeemer,” Rio’s archbishop said.

But out of those 50, only three more on top of the two that were directly it, were seriously damaged. Currently, we have a little over 40 research groups that have lost their laboratories and offices and research space, if you like. And these are the research groups that we're finding solution for currently.”

“I wish that a day will come very very soon in which Iranian scientists and Israeli scientists would collaborate and work together and perform scientific research for the future of mankind. That's what we do here at the Weizmann Institute, and I hope there will come a day where we'll be able to do it together with Iranian scientists.”
    6. Various of destruction
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Eldad Tzahor, Weizmann Institute's professor:
“It's hard to tell. Some of the stuff that we have been doing, you know, you can recover and regenerate. But other stuff, basically like samples, like tissue from animals, from patients, we cannot recover this. So we will have to start from the beginning. In terms of how long it will take, it really depends. I would say, on average, it will take us perhaps a year until the lab is up and running again with the full gear and the new place to work. However, to rebuild this amazing building, it will take about three to four years."
    8. More of damage
    9. Pan from standing building to building in ruins
    STORYLINE:
For years, Israel has targeted Iranian nuclear scientists, hoping to choke progress on Iran’s nuclear program by striking at the brains behind it.
Now, with Iran and Israel in an open-ended direct conflict, scientists in Israel have found themselves in the crosshairs after an Iranian missile struck a premier research institute known for its work in life sciences and physics, among other fields.
While no one was killed in the strike on the Weizmann Institute of Science early Sunday, it caused heavy damage to multiple labs on campus, snuffing out years of scientific research and sending a chilling message to Israeli scientists that they and their expertise are now targets in the escalating conflict with Iran.
Speaking in front of the ruins of one building, Professor Eldad Tzahor said that they have ''to start from the beginning.'' ''It will take us perhaps a year until the lab is up and running again with the full gear and the new place to work. However, to rebuild this amazing bu... [truncated]

He went there and died. His little daughter said to him, 'Dad, I want a biscuit, I want a biscuit.' He went to get her a biscuit and was martyred. He was martyred and left his children. He went to get biscuits, but he was martyred. We don't want to get aid this way. We want to get it by messages (meaning through the UNRWA agency).”

"So the Black, the African burying ground was built over, covered on, erased from memory. And it's so important that this time we're gathered here during Juneteenth 2025, which is a commemoration two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made by our then-president Lincoln that freed the enslaved African and African Americans."

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rev. Robert Thompson, Director Emeritus, Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire:
"I imagine the emotions they felt when they heard that that document had been signed and that they were free. I imagine among the things they would have felt when they found out, that they heard about it two years late. Maybe there was some joy. There might have been some anger. I would have been a little ticked off I think to have known that I had been free for two years, but nobody didn't bother to tell me?"

    STORYLINE:
By the time the drumming and dancing starts Thursday, an organization that promotes African American history and culture in New Hampshire will have hosted nearly a dozen events to celebrate Juneteenth.

Executive Director JerriAnne Boggis said her organization and other partners want to highlight contradictions in the familiar narratives about the nation’s founding fathers.

It is recognized at least as an observance in every state, and nearly 30 states and Washington, D.C., have designated it as a permanent paid or legal holiday through legislation or executive action. But this year’s celebrations come as President Donald Trump has banned diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI, in the federal government and removed content about Black American history from federal websites.
The White House said last week that plans for a Juneteenth event or proclamation this year have not been decided. During his first administration, Trump issued statements each June 19, including one that ended with “On Juneteenth 2017, we honor the countless contributions made by African Americans to our Nation and pledge t...
