  • Nearly 200 Venezuelan migrants are flown home from Guantanamo Bay
    (21 Feb 2025)

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    La Guaira,Venezuela - 20 February 2025

    2. Various of migrants offloading
    STORYLINE:
Nearly 200 Venezuelan migrants to the U.S. were returned to their home country after being detained at Guantanamo Bay, in a flurry of flights that forged an unprecedented pathway for U.S. deportations.
U.S. and Venezuelan authorities confirmed the deportations that relied on a stopover in Honduras, where 177 Venezuelans exited a U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement flight and boarded a Venezuelan plane bound for Caracas.
The flight carrying the migrants arrived in La Guaira International Airport on Thursday night.
The government of President Nicolás Maduro said it had “requested the repatriation of a group” of Venezuelans “who were unjustly taken” to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
With the request accepted, an aircraft with the state-owned airline Conviasa picked up the migrants from Honduras. ICE confirmed the transfer of 177 “Venezuelan illegal aliens.”
The administration of President Donald Trump has placed a high priority on deporting people who have exhausted all legal appeals to stay in the U.S.
Nearly 1.5 million had final removal orders as of Nov. 24, according to ICE figures, including more than 22,000 Venezuelans.
In a court filing Thursday, federal immigration and military authorities said that “Venezuela has historically resisted accepting repatriation of its citizens but has recently begun accepting removals following high-level political discussions and an investment of significant resources.”
Last week, two Venezuelan flights carried 190 immigrants directly from the U.S. to Venezuela in a rare moment of coordination between the two countries that may be giving way to regular exchanges.
Thursday’s court filing by U.S. Justice Department attorneys provides the most thorough official accounting to date about who is being held at the isolated Guantanamo Bay military complex and why — noting that detainees as of Wednesday were Venezuelans with final orders of deportation.
More immigrant transfer flights arrived at Guantanamo Bay on Thursday in planes departing from Texas and Louisiana, said Thomas Cartwright of Witness at the Border, an advocacy group that tracks deportation flights.
Trump in January said he wanted to expand immigrant detention facilities at Guantanamo to hold as many as 30,000 people, although the current capacity at Guantanamo's low-security migrant operations center is roughly 2,500.
The naval base is best known for housing suspects taken in after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but it also has been used for holding people caught trying to illegally reach the U.S. by boat and to coordinate the resettlement of immigrants in the U.S.
The U.S. government has alleged that Venezuelan immigrants transferred to the naval base are members of the Tren de Aragua gang, which... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
The Mexican resort town of Acapulco awoke on Thursday under dark clouds, but without a drop of rain and small waves lapping at its central beach.
A few beachgoers even ventured to go out, and workers could be seen boarding up the windows of a local mall. Still, it appeared Acapulco had dodged the worst at least in terms of Erick's strong winds.
However, the storm was forecast to move northwest just inland up the coast through midday, bringing heavy rain to the resort and the mountains that tower dramatically above it.
The powerful Hurricane made landfall in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca early on the day, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said, but there was no immediate report of injuries.
The hurricane's center was located about 20 miles (30 kilometers) east of Punta Maldonado.
The storm was downgraded slightly before making landfall, from a powerful Category 4 to a Category 3. While slightly reduced in power, Erick is still considered a major hurricane as a Category 3, which can carry winds of up to 129 mph (210 kph).

    3. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Israel Katz, Israeli Defense Minister:
"I see the situation, a modern dictator like (Iran's Supreme Leader) Khamenei, who heads a country, he has great ideological influence and he uses it and says he is in favor of eliminating Israel. He uses all means on the account of his people to achieve the goal. Today, we see evidence that he personally gives orders to fire at hospitals."
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
Israel's defense minister overtly threatened Iran's supreme leader on Thursday after the latest missile barrage from Iran damaged a major hospital and hit a high-rise and several other residential buildings near Tel Aviv.
At least 40 people were wounded in the attacks, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service.
Black smoke rose from the Soroka Medical Center in the southern city of Beersheba as emergency teams evacuated patients.
There were no serious injuries in the strike on the hospital.
In the aftermath of the strikes, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz blamed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and said the military "has been instructed and knows that in order to achieve all of its goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist.”
U.S. officials said this week that President Donald Trump had vetoed an Israeli plan to kill Khamenei.
Trump later said there were no plans to kill him “at least not for now.”
Israel, meanwhile, carried out strikes on Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor, in its latest attack on the country's sprawling nuclear program, on the seventh day of a conflict that began with a surprise wave of Israeli airstrikes targeting military sites, senior officers and nuclear scientists.
A Washington-based Iranian human rights group said at least 639 people, including 263 civilians, have been killed in Iran and more than 1,300 wounded.
In retaliation, Iran has fired some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones, killing at least 24 people in Israel and wounding hundreds.

  • Cruise ship in Cyprus departs to repatriate Israelis stranded amid escalating tensions in the Middle

    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Israelis stranded in Cyprus have boarded a cruise ship that will return them to their homeland.
The Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris embarked Thursday on the trip of about 270 kilometers to Israel with some of the travellers who have been stranded there by fighting between Israel and Iran in the past week.
Approximately 6,500 Israelis were in Cyprus after being diverted to the east Mediterranean island, the closest European nation to Israel, or travelled there voluntarily in hopes of catching a flight or boat trip back to Israel, according to Cyprus's chief Rabbi.
Cyprus has become a key transit point for the repatriation of third-country nationals fleeing conflict areas in the region, as well as Israelis and others wishing to return home in the absence of direct flights there.
The open conflict sparked by Israel's sudden barrage of attacks against Iran's nuclear and military structure shows no signs of abating on the seventh day of hostilities between the two longtime foes that threatens to spiral into a wider, more dangerous regional war.
An Iranian missile hit a hospital in southern Israel early Thursday, while others struck an apartment building in Tel Aviv and other sites in central Israel, wounding at least 40 people.

They're targeting a hospital. In this hospital, there are patients who are immobile, they can't even move. Right next to it is a children's ward, a baby's ward, infants. They target it. They can give this nonsense that they're targeting military sites. What military sites? I know all the military sites in Israel. There isn't a military site here for miles and miles around. They're targeting civilians because they're a criminal regime. They're the arch-terrorists of the world. They want to have nuclear terrorism, which will put the entire world under nuclear blackmail, and they would use these weapons. That's what the Ayatollah Khamenei says that he would do. He would use these weapons to wipe Israel off the map. Well, he's not going to. We're not going let him.”

    STORYLINE:
A court in Kenya on Thursday gave detectives 15 days to complete investigations into two police officers suspected of shooting and wounding a hawker during the latest street protests over the death of a blogger in custody.
The officers were arraigned in court two days after the Tuesday shooting of Boniface Kariuki, 22, which triggered further anger and fury over persistent complaints against police brutality.
Tuesday’s protests in the capital followed tensions over the death of the blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead while in custody at the Central Police Station.
Ojwang was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya for what police called publishing “false information” about a top police official on social media.
Police attributed his death to him “hitting his head against the cell wall,” but activists have questioned the cause of death.
As hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Nairobi, Kariuki is believed to have been caught up in a confrontation with two officers. One officer, who had concealed his face with a mask, shot him in the head as he walked away.
The officers will remain in custody until July 3.
During their court appearance, they concealed their faces with masks, sparking complaints from activists.
Kenya has a history of police brutality, and President William Ruto previously vowed to end it, along with extrajudicial killings.
Last year, several activists and protesters were abducted and killed by Kenyan police during protests against tax hikes. The demonstrations led to calls for Ruto’s removal.

US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said it would be a “very bad decision” for Lebanon's Hezbollah group if it intervened to support Iran's militarily in its conflict against Israel.
Barrack made the remarks to journalists in Beirut Thursday after visiting top officials in Lebanon.
Iran-backed Hezbollah has condemned Israel’s surprise strikes on Iran that sparked the conflict and endorsed Iran’s missile barrages over Israel, but has stopped short of saying it will take military action.
"So what we have all together is hope and that chaos will subside soon and that out of that will come the blossoming of peace and prosperity in this desert which Lebanese bring all over the world,” Barrack told journalists after meeting with Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri.
