  • AP photographer recounts capturing shooting of a man by a Kenyan police officer during protests
    (19 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Nairobi, Kenya - 19 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian Inganga, The Associated Press:
"I have been reporting on extrajudicial killings in Kenya for over a decade, but I've never witnessed anything like this. People have been demonstrating for two weeks after a blogger died mysteriously in police custody. Calling it the latest incident in a long history of police brutality. On Tuesday, people gathered in downtown Nairobi , planning to march to the police headquarters to protest, but that descended into chaos. The peaceful protesters were met by men on motorbikes armed with whips and batons, who attacked them as they were marching towards the Kenya police headquarters. And then the most shocking moment, two police officers met Boniface Kariuki, a vendor who was selling surgical masks to demonstrators. One of them slapped him, the other one pointed a rifle on his head and fired from inches away, before walking off. Boniface Kariuki fell on the ground, on a pool of blood, as protesters rushed to try and do first aid to him where he was taken to the hospital in a critical condition. He has since undergone surgery and still in intensive care unit. The police officers were arrested and they'll be taken to court."

    STORYLINE:
An Associated Press photographer captured the shooting of a civilian by a Kenyan police officer in the head at close range on Tuesday, during the latest protest against the country’s deadly and pervasive issue of police brutality.
It happened on one of Nairobi's busiest streets, again outraging many Kenyans, who have long witnessed officers shooting or beating protesters and others.
Tuesday’s shooting was rare because the officer fired in full view of journalists.
The AP is publishing the photos despite their graphic nature because they show evidence of a police shooting of a civilian.
The man who was shot appeared to be a vendor, not a protester — he fell holding a packet of face masks he was selling.
The photos show officers jumping off a vehicle, with guns.
An officer wearing a face mask fires his gun in the direction of protesters, who are outside the frame of the photo.
The same officer and a colleague run over to the vendor.
It's not clear why they approached him, guns drawn, or what was said.

“Queremos reducir nuestras emisiones”, dijo Yaker.

    STORYLINE:
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has made an appeal for the international community to help the UNHCR alongside Lebanon and Syria with refugees.
Speaking in Lebanon following meetings with officials, Filippo Grandi also thanked Lebanon for the work they have done to ensure there’s no refugee crisis.
Grandi also said they need funding and investment for Syria so that refugees can go back and live safely in their home.
“We need to allow people to stay there and not move again… So, full appreciation for what Lebanon has done, and continues to do for the people that are hosted here, but also, a strong appeal from all our partners in Europe, in the Gulf, in the international financial institutions to help us do the work in Syria,” he said.
Lebanon hosts the largest number of refugees per capita worldwide.
Some one million Syrian refugees live in the tiny country, of which about 722,000 are registered with the UNHCR.
Lebanon for years has called for their return to Syria as the conflict began to simmer, and has decried global budget cuts to aid programs in the country.
UNHCR in response would say that the situation in Syria is not safe enough for returns.

There is a willingness to resume talks, including with the United States, provided that a ceasefire can be reached. On our side, there is a willingness to resume negotiations, provided that these negotiations can lead to lasting, substantial steps backward by Iran regarding its nuclear program, its ballistic program and its activities to destabilize the region."

"There is a very strong unity between this group, which in diplomatic jargon is called the E3, the British, the Germans and the French, who, ten years ago, brought the Iranian nuclear negotiations to a successful conclusion. Those negotiations led to a sharp decline in uranium enrichment, in installed enrichment capacity - in short, in Iran's nuclear program, which was suspected of having a military purpose. Unfortunately, the United States chose to leave this agreement a few years later, which led the Iranian regime to review its position and commitments regarding this agreement."

    STORYLINE:
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Thursday that France and European partners are ready to "resume negotiations" with Iran.
“There is a willingness to resume talks, including with the United States, provided that a ceasefire can be reached,” Barrot said at a press conference in Paris.
The comments come after Iran’s state media said the country’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will meet with European counterparts in Geneva on Friday.
Barrot did not confirm the meeting.
"On our side, there is a willingness to resume negotiations, provided that these negotiations can lead to lasting, substantial steps backward by Iran regarding its nuclear program, its ballistic program and its activities to destabilize the region.”

Other missiles hit a high-rise apartment building in Tel Aviv and other sites in central Israel.
At least 240 people were wounded by the Iranian missiles, four of them seriously, according to Israel’s Health Ministry.

    STORYLINE:
Iran's state broadcaster allowed the media to film the aftermath of an Israeli strike against its building in Tehran.
Dust and debris filled an Iranian state television studio and an anchor rushed off camera on Monday when an Israeli strike hit during a live broadcast, an hour after Israel issued a warning for the area of Tehran where the station is located.
Sahar Emami, an anchor at the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, was seen hurrying off-camera as the screen behind her cut out.
People on set were heard saying “Allahu akbar,” the Arabic phrase for God is great.
The broadcast quickly switched to pre-recorded programs.
The station later said that the building was hit by four bombs.
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz took immediate credit for the attack.
Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesman for the Iranian foreign minister, condemned the strike, calling on the international community to demand justice from Israel for its attack on the media.
