    STORYLINE:
Trails of what seems to be an interception of a missile fired from Iran were seen over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on Wednesday.
Israel's air campaign has struck several nuclear and military sites, killing top generals and nuclear scientists.
A Washington-based Iranian human rights group said at least 585 people, including 239 civilians, have been killed and more than 1,300 wounded.
Iran has fired some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones in retaliatory strikes, killing at least 24 people in Israel and wounding hundreds.
Some have hit apartment buildings in central Israel, causing heavy damage, and air-raid sirens have repeatedly forced Israelis to run for shelter.
Iran has fired fewer missiles as the conflict has worn on. It has not explained the decline, but Israel has targeted launchers and other infrastructure related to the missiles.
Iran’s supreme leader issued a fresh warning Wednesday that U.S. direct involvement in Israel’s military operations be greeted with stiff retaliation.

    10. Close up on Susan's shoes
    STORYLINE:
The family of a Kenyan civilian who was shot by police during the latest protests over the alleged killing of a blogger in police custody on Wednesday demanded accountability for the violence.
The 22-year-old Boniface Kariuki, a hawker like his father, was holding a packet of face masks and is believed to have been caught up in a confrontation with two officers in Nairobi as hundreds of protesters clashed with police.
One officer, who had concealed his face with a mask, shot him at close range in the head as he walked away.
Tuesday's protests in the capital followed tensions over the death of the blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead while in custody at the Central Police Station.
Ojwang was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya for what police called publishing “false information” about a top police official on social media.
Police attributed his death to him “hitting his head against the cell wall,” but activists have questioned the cause of death.
Kariuki's family told journalists that their only son remained under intensive care after he underwent surgery on Tuesday night.
The hospital's spokesperson on Wednesday said injuries included gunshot wounds and that seven people were still hospitalized.
At the family's home in Murang'a County, in the highlands of central Kenya, neighbors spoke of nervousness about letting their children travel to Nairobi in search of work due to rising cases of police brutality.
Kariuki's mother, Susan Njeri, told The Associated Press that she last spoke to her son on Sunday, urging him to be safe during the planned protests.
“If they saw him with a stone or a baton, it would make sense to shoot him," she said. "But none of this makes sense. It was not a confrontation, he was just hustling.”
Police in a statement expressed concern and said that two officers, Klinzy Barasa and Duncan Kiprono, had been arrested ... [truncated]

  • Protests in Kenya likely to intensify, according to political analyst
    (18 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Nairobi, Kenya - 18 June 2025
    1. Various of political analyst, Professor Herman Manyora at his desk and on the phone
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Professor Herman Manyora, political analyst:
"The current protests are about the extrajudicial killings that are going on in the country and abductions. But more specifically about the death of a young man from Homa Bay county, Albert Ojwang, who was ferried all the way from Homa Bay - more than 350 kilometers from Nairobi and who died in the hands of police at Central Police station in Nairobi."
    3. Various of Manyora on the phone
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Professor Herman Manyora, political analyst:
"You could safely say that there will be more protests for two reasons. One, what the protesters and Kenyans in general want has not been done. For example, deputy inspector general Lagat (Eliud Kipkoech) has not resigned, neither has he been fired by the president. Instead he has done something called 'stepping aside' which is a very Kenyan thing. So had he perhaps resigned or had he been arrested then you could perhaps think that could sort of lower the temperatures. The second reason why the demonstrations might continue is we are approaching the 25th of June, which is the anniversary. As people remember what happened last year on the 25th of June, when the young people - known as Gen-Zs - demonstrated and broke into parliament. Quite a number of them were killed."
    5. Various of Manyora at his desk
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Professor Herman Manyora, political analyst:
"Police insensitivity and brutality will act as a catalyst to make these demonstrations worse. We have seen the police use live ammunition. We have seen the police use excessive force on very young people, peaceful demonstrators. But above all and this is very frightening, we have seen political leadership engage goons. People out to help the government deal with the demonstrators."
    7. Mid of Manyora shutting his laptop
    STORYLINE:
A leading Kenyan political analyst and lecturer at the University of Nairobi believes protests in Kenya will likely intensify in the coming days.
“What the protesters and Kenyans in general want has not been done,” Professor Herman Manyora told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
The protests come as a senior police officer appeared in court Wednesday over the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody.
Kenya’s prosecutor requested the accused police boss, Samson Talam, remains in detention for 15 days to allow for more investigations to be carried out.
Kenyan authorities on Friday arrested Talam who was responsible for the cell where a blogger died.
Albert Ojwang was found dead while in custody at the Central Police Station.

“All right, jurors, everybody please be seated. Jurors, we thank you for your service. We're going to send you back. Your service is complete. I'd like to come back and talk to you a little bit afterwards.”
    STORYLINE:
A jury found Karen Read not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges Wednesday in the 2022 death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, a case that attracted legions of true crime followers who erupted in cheers when word of the acquittal spread outside court.
The same jury also found her guilty of a lesser charge of drunken driving after deliberating for at least 22 hours since June 13.
Cheers from the crowd outside could be heard in the courtroom as the verdict was read. With gleeful supporters, Read departed the courthouse with her attorneys and family.
It was a huge victory for Read’s lawyers, who have long asserted that she was framed by police after dropping John O’Keefe off at a party at the home of a fellow officer. Prosecutors argued that the 45-year-old Read hit O’Keefe, 46, with her SUV before driving away, but the defense maintained that he was killed inside the home and later dragged outside.
