  • Dozens of Berliners jump into Spree River to encourage city to lift swimming ban

    9. Wide of people swimming
    STORYLINE:
There’s a push by swimmers to get back into the water in Berlin after the German capital banned swimming in the Spree River because it was so polluted that locals were at risk of falling ill.
On Tuesday, around 200 people jumped into the river's slow-moving, greenish water to show that it's not only clean enough, but also lots of fun to splash and swim in the city's historic Mitte neighborhood along the world-famous Museum Island.
A group calling itself Fluss Bad Berlin, or River Pool Berlin, has been lobbying for several years to open up the river for swimmers again.
“For 100 years now, people have not been allowed to swim in the inner-city Spree and we no longer think this is justified, because we can show that the water quality is usually good enough to go swimming during the season," said Jan Edler, who is on the board of Fluss Bad Berlin and helped organize Tuesday's swim-in.
To circumvent the ban, the group registered their collective swim event as an official protest.
Standing on a little staircase that leads down to the Spree canal, which flows around the southern side of the island, Edler stressed that “we want the people to use the Spree for recreation again.”
He pointed that the river has been cleaned up thoroughly, and that the water quality has improved in the last decade and is constantly being monitored.
Even city officials in the central Mitte district of Berlin say they'd be interested in introducing river swimming again in 2026.
Supporters of lifting the swimming ban also point at Paris, where the Seine River was opened up for swimmers for the Olympic Games last year and will be opened this summer for Parisians.
Swimming there had been banned since 1923.
Only in Berlin, swimming has been continuously prohibited in the Spree since May 1925, when the German capital closed all traditional river pools because the water was deemed too toxic.
Some of those pools weren't only used for recreational swimming, but were a place for poor people to wash themselves if they didn't have bathrooms at home.
These days, the water is clean on most days, except when there's heavy rain, which leads to some water pollution.
Allowing swimmers to dive into the river would also mean loosening the historical monument protection on some ... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
The capital city of Malaysia serves as the country's financial center, with an estimated population of over 2 million people.
Kuala Lumpur spans over 240 square kilometers, or about 150 miles.
Officially known as the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur, it is one of the fastest growing cities in Southeast Asia.
The main feature of Kuala Lumpur is its many skyscrapers dotting the landscape. The most iconic is the Petronas Twin Towers, which was completed in 1996 - to date, it is still one of the tallest sets of twin buildings in the world.
The National Palace is where Malaysia’s king resides and conducts his official duties.
Kuala Lumpur also boasts dozens of other unique skyscraper buildings, including the newly minted Merdeka 118 tower, which is ranked the second-tallest building in the world after Dubai's Burj Khalifa.
Kuala Lumpur is also known as a shopping and culinary destination for tourists, especially in the area known as Bukit Bintang, where street food and many shopping malls attract tourists from abroad.
The History of Kuala Lumpur started as a tin mining settlement, but it soon grew into a thriving city. In 1957, it became the capital of the federation of Malaya and its successor Malaysia.
Although the seat of government was relocated to Putrajaya in 1999, Kuala Lumpur still remains a most important city in Malaysia.

  • Salsa teachers dance in shelter in Tel Aviv to relieve tension during Iranian barrage

    3. Various of Cuban salsa teachers Tav Golan and Anna Kaniel dancing in shelter, people watching
    STORYLINE:
Iranian missiles launched towards Israel are forcing Israelis to dash for the shelters every few hours.
In one public shelter in Jaffa, a mixed Arab-Jewish neighborhood of Tel Aviv, two Cuban salsa teachers put some music on and offered an impromptu show in front of more than 100 people and 15 dogs.
“We’re stuck in here anyways, so is it OK if we bring up the energy a bit?” asked Tav Golan, a dance teacher who teaches in the nearby city of Rishon Lezion.
He started some salsa music on a portable speaker and grabbed the hand of fellow dance teacher Anna Kaniel.
Since 1993, all new homes in Israel must be built with a “safe room” or reinforced room meant to withstand a rocket attack.
But many older neighborhoods still make do with public shelters, often built underneath city parks, schools, or parking garages.
Inside these dusty underground rooms, a wide cross section of neighborhoods crush into the rooms together many times a day.
It comes as Israel claimed on Tuesday to have killed a top Iranian general as it traded more strikes with its longtime foe.
President Donald Trump warned residents of Tehran to evacuate while suggesting that the United States could give up on negotiations.
Israel says its sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites and ballistic missile program is necessary to prevent its adversary from getting any closer to building an atomic weapon.
The strikes have killed at least 224 people in Iran.
Iran has retaliated by launching some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel. So far, 24 people have been killed in Israel.

    STORYLINE:
Supporters of former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner rallied in Buenos Aires on Tuesday after she was ordered to serve her six-year prison sentence for corruption at home.
The demonstration was held on the street that the former president lives in.
Earlier in the day, federal court judges ruled that Fernández, 72, can serve time in the apartment where she lives with her daughter and her granddaughter, citing her age and security reasons.
Fernández was the victim of an attempted assassination three years ago.
In the ruling, obtained by The Associated Press, the court said that Fernández “must remain at the registered address, an obligation that she may not break except in exceptional situations.”
The court also ordered that Fernández be placed under the watch of an electronic surveillance device to monitor her movements.
Last week, Argentina’s highest court upheld Fernández’s sentence in a ruling that permanently banned her from public office over the corruption conviction that found she had directed state contracts to a friend while she was the first lady and president.
The ruling barred Fernández from running in this fall’s Buenos Aires legislative election just days after she launched her campaign.
Fernández was embroiled in multiple corruption scandals during her tenure. She was convicted in 2022 of corruption in a case that centered on 51 public contracts for public works awarded to companies linked to Lázaro Báez, a convicted construction magnate and friend of the presidential couple, at prices 20% above the standard rate in a project that cost the state tens of millions of dollars.
Fernández has questioned the impartiality of the judges. She claimed that her defense didn’t have access to much of the evidence and that it was gathered without regard to legal deadlines.

At least 51 Palestinians were killed and more than 200 wounded in the Gaza Strip while waiting for U.N. and commercial trucks to enter the territory with desperately needed food, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and a local hospital.
Palestinian witnesses told The Associated Press that Israeli forces carried out an airstrike on a nearby home before opening fire toward the crowd in the southern city of Khan Younis.
The Israeli military said soldiers had spotted a gathering near an aid truck that was stuck in Khan Younis, near where Israeli forces were operating.
It did not appear to be related to a new Israeli- and U.S.-supported aid delivery network that rolled out last month and has been marred by violence.
Yousef Nofal, an eyewitness, said he saw many people motionless and bleeding on the ground after Israeli forces opened fire.
Palestinians say Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire on crowds trying to reach food distribution points run by a separate U.S. and Israeli-backed aid group since the centers opened last month.
Local health officials say scores have been killed and hundreds wounded.
In those instances, the Israeli military has acknowledged firing warning shots at people it said had approached its forces in a suspicious manner.
U.N. agencies and major aid groups deny there is any major diversion of aid and have rejected the new system, saying it can't meet the mounting needs in Gaza and that it violates humanitarian principles by allowing Israel to control who has access to aid.
Experts have warned of famine in the territory that is home to some 2 million Palestinians.
