    Minneapolis – 17 June 2025

    2. Minneapolis downtown skyline
    STORYLINE:
The bodies of Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman were brought to a Minneapolis funeral home Tuesday. A white van and coach bus escorted by police vehicles and a firetruck drove from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnetonka to the Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home.
Hortman and her husband fatally shot in their home early Saturday morning by a man posing as a police officer in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center.
Fifty seven year old Vance Boelter faces federal murder and stalking charges related to the Hortmans' deaths. Authorities say he also shot and wounded Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, at their home in a nearby neighborhood that same morning. They also said he visited the homes of two other state legislators but did not encounter them, and officials in other states reported Monday that they were on his list of targets.
Melissa Hortman was a lifelong Minneapolis-area resident who rose to become a powerful Democratic leader in the state's deeply divided Legislature.
Elected to the Minnesota House in 2004, she helped pass liberal initiatives like free lunches for public school students in 2023 as the chamber’s speaker. This year, she helped break a budget impasse that threatened to shut down state government.
State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, who were shot at their home in Champlin, a Minneapolis suburb, were recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Hoffman is chair of the Senate committee overseeing human resources spending.
He also served on a state workforce development board with Boelter, who was twice appointed to the board. It was not clear if they knew each other.

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Brad Lander, (D) New York City Comptroller and Mayoral Candidate:
“I mean you guys all saw it on video so you know exactly what happened and I think probably on advice of counsel I will not characterize the events but I certainly did not assault an officer.”

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Brad Lander, (D) New York City Comptroller and Mayoral Candidate:
“This is a critical time to have a mayor who will stand up to ICE and stand up to Donald Trump and insist on due process and the laws of this city. This is a sanctuary city. I was proud to co-sponsor those laws and I'm going to show up and defend them and partly why I'm running for mayor is that New Yorkers deserve better."
    STORYLINE:
New York City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by federal agents at an immigration court Tuesday after he linked arms with a person authorities were attempting to detain.
A reporter with The Associated Press and other journalists witnessed Lander’s arrest at a federal building in Manhattan, the latest confrontation between U.S. agents and a Democratic politician objecting to the Trump administration's effort to jail and deport mass numbers of immigrants. The immigrant Lander escorted out of the courtroom was also arrested.
Videos taken by journalists show agents struggling to separate Lander from the man he’d linked arms with for more than 40 seconds before wrestling the two apart. Multiple agents then grabbed Lander’s arms and put them behind his back.
“You’re obstructing," an agent told Lander.
“I’m not obstructing, I’m standing right here in the hallway,” Lander said as he was being handcuffed.
In a statement, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Lander “was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer."
Lander was released from custody after a few hours where he was greeted outside Federal Plaza by a crowd of supporters.
After learning from reporters about the statement DHS released, Lander responded, “I mean you guys all saw it on video so you know exactly what happened and I think probably on advice of counsel I will not characterize the events but I certainly did not assault an officer,”.
Lander is a candidate in the city's Democratic mayoral primary. Early voting in the contest is underway and the election is next ... [truncated]
