    2. Wide of swimmers walking, Berlin TV tower in the background
    3. Swimmers diving into river
    4. Wide of people swimming
    5. SOUNDBITE (German) Jan Edler, Fluss Bad Berlin board member:
“We are a non-profit association called Flussbad Berlin (River Pool Berlin), and we are committed to ensuring that people can swim in the Spree again in the future. And that sounds so simple at first, it would actually be if it wasn't forbidden. And this ban goes back a relatively long way, namely almost exactly 100 years ago, on May 25, 1925, the city council in Berlin closed the last inner-city river bathing establishments, there were several of them, because the water quality had become so poor at the time.”

    11. SOUNDBITE (German) Jan Edler, Fluss Bad Berlin board member:
“There is a water law in Germany and this water law states that people have a kind of basic right to use a body of water. This is called public use. And we think that this blanket ban actually violates this and tramples on this public use and we now want to bring this back and then gradually open up the possibility for people to use the Spree for recreational purposes again.”

    16. SOUNDBITE (German) Jan Edler, Fluss Bad Berlin board member:
“For 100 years now, people have not been allowed to swim in the inner-city Spree and we no longer think this is justified, because we can show that the water quality is usually good enough to go swimming during the season. It has become much, much better.”
    17. People swimming
    18. Sign reading (German): “Swim the bathing ban away”
    19. Swimmers jumping into water
    20. Wide of TV tower and people swimming
    STORYLINE:
There’s a push by swimmers to get back into the water in Berlin after the German capital banned swimming in the Spree River because it was so polluted that locals were at risk of falling ill.
On Tuesday, around 200 people jumped into the river's slow-moving, greenish water to show that it's not only clean enough, but also lots of fun to splash and swim in the city's historic Mitte neighborhood along the world-famous Museum Island.
A group calling itself Fluss Bad Berlin, or River Pool Berlin, has been lobbying for several years to open up the river for swimmers again.
“For 100 years now, people have not been allowed to swim in the inner-city Spree and we no longer think this is justified, because we can show that the water quality is usually good enough to go... [truncated]

    11. Demonstrators outside building
    STORYLINE:
Indigenous people and activists protested on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro as Brazil auctioned dozens of oil blocks including the mouth of the Amazon River.
The auctions took place in a luxury hotel in Rio de Janeiro and were conducted by the National Oil Agency.
Most of the 172 blocks for sale are located in areas with no current production, such as 47 offshore locations close to the Amazon River and two sites at an inland territory in the Amazon near Indigenous territories.
In total, at least 19 offshore blocks near the Amazon River were awarded to oil companies Chevron, ExxonMobil, Petrobras and CNPC.
The area is considered highly promising because it shares geological characteristics with Guyana, where some of the largest offshore oil discoveries of the 21st century have been made.
This region is considered to have high potential risk due to its strong currents and the proximity to the Amazon seashore.
“We can no longer accept the violation of our rights,” said Rosines Kamunu, a woman from Indigenous Manoki people in the state of Mato Grosso.
Under public pressure from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, known as IBAMA, approved an emergency plan allowing state-run Petrobras to conduct exploratory drilling in a block near the mouth of the Amazon River, the last step to grant an environmental license.
Brazil’s National Oil Agency said the auctions are part of the country’s energy diversification strategy aimed at transitioning to a low-carbon economy and that contracts signed with the winning companies include measures to reduce carbon intensity in production ac... [truncated]
