    STORYLINE:
The death toll from an attack by gunmen over the weekend in north-central Nigeria has climbed to 150, survivors said Monday as the villagers were still digging through burned homes, counting their dead and looking for dozens of people still missing.
Assailants stormed Benue state’s Yelewata community late on Friday night, opening fire on villagers who were asleep and setting their homes ablaze, survivors and the local farmers union said.
Many of those killed were sheltering in a local market after fleeing violence in other parts of the state.
Matthew Nlan said the shootings "lasted for more than five hours."
"They burnt some of our community members in stores there; there are some stores that are housing more than 50 persons," he said. "All were burnt down. People slaughtered here, others burnt to ashes."
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the killings, but such attacks are common in Nigeria’s northern region where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water.
The prolonged conflict has become deadlier in recent years, with authorities and analysts warning that more herdsmen are taking up arms.
The farmers accuse the herders, mostly of Fulani origin, of grazing their livestock on their farms and destroying their produce.
The herders insist that the lands are grazing routes that were first backed by law in 1965, five years after the country gained its independence.

    STORYLINE:
A doctor charged with giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the months leading up to the “Friends” star's overdose death has agreed to plead guilty, authorities said Monday.
Dr. Salvador Plasencia has agreed to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, federal prosecutors said in a statement. They said the plea carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, and Plascencia is expected to enter the plea in the coming weeks.
Plasencia and a woman accused of being a ketamine dealer had been the primary targets of the prosecution, after three other defendants, including another doctor, agreed to plead guilty in exchange for their cooperation.
Plasencia had been scheduled to start trial in August.
Perry died on Oct. 28, 2023 at age 54.

"Now, anybody comes to Barcelona, they shouldn't be worried about being shot by some random local walking down the street. There have been a couple of big protests over the last two years, and these are a feature. On Sunday Barcelona had about 1000 people march against tourism, and there were a number of unsuspecting tourists who did get spritzed a little bit. Some were annoyed, some took it in (their) stride . But this is probably going to be a feature of any more protests to come to the future ."

    STORYLINE:
The humble water gun - the cheap, squirt-squirt variety - has become the weapon of choice and symbol of Spain's anti-tourism protests.
Activists say that it all started in 2024 when some people showed up at a tourism protest in the Spanish city of Barcelona with some water guns.
The intention was to keep cool in the summer heat but instead the water guns were turned on tourists.
Images of demonstrators spritzing unsuspecting tourists went viral.
Almost a year later protesters drew their water guns again in a march over the weekend against over-tourism in Barcelona and targeted would-be visitors along the march route.
Still, the number of Barcelona protesters carrying water guns was a minority - and in the gun-toting group, many were only shooting in the air or at each other.
Outside the protests, Barcelona locals are not toting water guns or taking aim at tourists.
Many in the city still support tourism, which is a pillar of the local economy.

  • Thousands of Palestinians continue walking to food aid distribution centers

    1. Various of people in Khan Younis walking to and from the aid distribution centers
    2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Firas al-Arja, Palestinian man from Rafah:
“We’ve been walking since early morning, with no food or water. Every day we’re getting flour and oil, flour and oil, we need fish, we need meat, we need to live. We want this war to be over, we’re tired, people are dying and people are hungry.”
    3. People riding in vehicle
    4. Person opening bag, showing what's inside
    5. Various of people walking with bags
    STORYLINE:
Thousands of men, women, and children continued to walk to get food, despite at least 34 Palestinians being killed Monday in new shootings on the roads leading to Israeli- and U.S.-supported food distribution centers in the Gaza Strip, the local Health Ministry said.
The toll was the deadliest yet in the near-daily shootings that have taken place as thousands of Palestinians move through Israeli military-controlled areas to reach the food centers.
As on previous days, witnesses said Israeli troops opened fire in an attempt to control crowds.
The ministry says several hundred people have been killed and hundreds more wounded in such shootings since the centers, run by the private contractor Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, opened three weeks ago.
There was no immediate comment by the Israeli military.
It has said in previous instances that troops fired warning shots at what it calls suspects approaching their positions.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said 33 Palestinians were killed trying to reach the GHF center near the southern city of Rafah and another on route to a GHF hub in central Gaza.
It said four other people were killed elsewhere.
Israel and the United States say the new GHF system is needed to prevent Hamas from siphoning off aid.
GHF says there has been no violence in or around the sites themselves.

    6. Pan from people next to burnt cars to wide of building hit by rocket
    STORYLINE:
Israel said on Monday that at least 24 people have been killed and more than 500 injured as Iran launched more than 370 missiles and hundreds of drones.
Authorities in the northern Israeli port city of Haifa said an Iranian missile had hit a residential building.
It comes as Iran fired a new wave of missile attacks on Israel early Monday, killing at least five people, while Israel claimed it had achieved air superiority over Tehran and could fly over the Iranian capital without facing major threats.
On the fourth day of the conflict, the Israeli military said it had destroyed more than 120 surface-to-surface missile launchers in central Iran, a third of Iran's total.
It also said fighter jets had struck 10 command centers in Tehran belonging to Iran’s Quds Force, an elite arm of its Revolutionary Guard that conducts military and intelligence operations outside Iran.
Iran, meanwhile, announced it had launched some 100 missiles and vowed further retaliation for sweeping attacks on its military and nuclear infrastructure that have killed at least 224 people in the country since Friday.
One missile fell near the American consulate in Tel Aviv, with its blast waves causing minor damage, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee said on X.
He added that no American personnel were injured.
The latest conflict began when Israel launched an assault on Iran’s top military leaders, uranium enrichment sites and nuclear scientists that it said was necessary to prevent its longtime adversary from getting any closer to building an atomic weapon.

"In addition, we are seeing people who are impersonating law enforcement officials. And so this is also to try to discourage these imposters, these thugs that are engaging in activity that's clearly illegal and clearly not authorized. So this is a very important step to hold law enforcement accountable, to keep our community safe in California. And we are committed to move this bill forward this year. It is time critical, it is important that we put this in place now."

    8. SOUNDBITE (English) State Sen. Scott Wiener, (D) San Francisco:
"If you start having a system where law enforcement officers are moving towards like storm troopers in Star Wars, when I was a kid, I remember thinking that the storm troopers were all robots. They're not. They're people who just covered everything up. We don't want to move towards that kind of model where law enforcement becomes almost like an occupying army disconnected from the community. And that's what it is when you start hiding their face, hiding the identity, and that's why in San Francisco and in so many local communities, law enforcement officers, they don't cover their faces. They have their name and their badge number on their uniform so you can see who's interacting with you or who's arresting you. And I understand, I don't want anyone to be doxed and there are rules around that, but boy, it's a totally different society that we're going to be living in if we get to the point where it is considered acceptable for law enforcement officers to be anonymous. That is not okay."
