  • Some arrests in Los Angeles after protesters refuse to leave street after curfew

    STORYLINE:
On the third night of an 8 p.m. PDT (0300GMT) curfew Thursday, Los Angeles police arrested several demonstrators who refused orders to leave a street downtown.
Earlier in the night, officers with the Department of Homeland Security deployed flash bangs to disperse a crowd that had gathered near the jail, sending protesters sprinting away.
Those incidents were outliers. As with the past two nights, the hours-long demonstrations remained peaceful and upbeat, drawing a few hundred attendees who marched through downtown chanting, dancing and poking fun at the Trump administration’s characterization of the city as a “war zone.”
Also Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pledged to carry on with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown despite waves of unrest across the U.S.
Hours later a judge directed the president to return control to California over National Guard troops he deployed after protests erupted over the immigration crackdown, but an appeals court quickly put the brakes on that and temporarily blocked the order that was to go into effect on Friday.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled a hearing on the matter for Tuesday.
The federal judge's temporary restraining order said the Guard deployment was illegal and both violated the Tenth Amendment and exceeded President Donald Trump's statutory authority.
The order applied only to the National Guard troops and not Marines who were also deployed to the LA protests. The judge said he would not rule on the Marines because they were not out on the streets yet.

    5. Tarazona receiving the tribute of military boots UPSOUND (Spanish): "Thank you, thank you."
    6. Various of Tarazona walking with boots and flag
    STORYLINE:
Veterans and soldiers gathered outside the medical centre where presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is being hospitalised on Thursday. They held a mass for the senator who was shot in the head whilst campaigning.
Meanwhile, Colombian authorities charged a second person allegedly involved in the shooting attack at Uribe's rally, who has been in critical condition in hospital since Saturday.
His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona received a tribute of military boots from the soldiers gathered outside the medical centre.
Carlos Eduardo Mora González is accused by the prosecutor's office of participating in the logistics of the attack.
He was charged with aggravated homicide, illegal possession of firearms and use of minors in the commission of crimes, the report added. A judge ordered on Thursday that Mora González be remanded in custody.
The senator and pre-candidate was giving a campaign speech on Saturday in a park in western Bogotá in broad daylight when he was shot in the back and wounded in the head.
The politician underwent surgery and his condition is critical, although there are ‘signs of neurological improvement’, according to the Santa Fe Foundation Clinic where he is hospitalised.
Following the attack, a 15-year-old teenager was arrested for allegedly shooting at the politician and fleeing.
The minor rejected the charges of attempted homicide and illegal carrying of weapons brought by the prosecutor's office and remains in detention under special conditions because he is a minor.
The authorities are investigating the motive for the attack on Uribe Turbay, an opponent of the government of leftist Gustavo Petro.
The attack on Uribe Turbay comes less than a year before the 2026 presidential elections and has raised concerns for the security of the other pre-candidates.
Some cancelled their campaign events pre-emptively, in a country with a violent past in which drug cartels assassinated presidential candidates and other high-profile figures.
The Colombian government said Thursday it is working to strengthen security arrangements for opposition members and presidential hopefuls.

    STORYLINE:
A residential building was badly damaged after Israel attacked Iran’s capital Friday in strikes that targeted the country’s nuclear program and raised the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries.
On Friday emergency workers were extinguishing the flames while shocked residents looked on.
The strikes appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.
Multiple sites around the country were hit, including Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility, where black smoke could be seen rising into the air.
The leader of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami, was confirmed dead, a development that would be a body blow to Tehran’s governing theocracy and an immediate escalation of the nations’ long-simmering conflict.
Top military officials and scientists were also believed killed.

    ++PARTIALLY COVERED++
"The defense case revolves around the theory that Karen Read never struck John O'Keefe and left him to die in the snow, that instead she dropped him off at this house party in Canton. He went inside and got into a fight. The people with whom he fought, then dragged him outside and left him to die in the snow. To develop this theory, the defense called 11 witnesses culminating in a crash expert on Wednesday that, in essence, is a battle of the expert-witnesses type of strategy. This crash expert was juxtaposed against the prosecution's own crash reconstruction expert. The goal of the defense here is just to create reasonable doubt. It's important to keep in mind that the prosecution bears the entire burden of proof in a criminal case. They have to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”
