    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) California:
    "Thanks everybody for taking the time to be here. We just had a chance to review the 36-page order from Justice Breyer. I'm gratified by the order, by his decision. Today was really about a test of democracy. And today, we passed the test. We, the people, passed the test."

    "We're gratified. Today is a big day for the Constitution of the United States, for our democracy. And I hope it's the beginning of a new day in this country."

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) California:
    "The National Guard will come back under my authority by noon tomorrow. The National Guard will be redeployed to what they were doing before Donald Trump commandeered them. The National Guard will go back to border security, working on counter drug enforcement and fentanyl enforcement, which they were taken off by Donald Trump."

    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) California:
    "It's the kind of thing you see Kim Jong Un, you see it Putin, you see it with dictators around the world that are weak and just want to demonstrate strength. Weakness masquerading as strength, to fete the dear leader on his birthday. What an embarrassment, honestly, that's about as small as it gets. How weak, how weak do you have to be to commandeer the military to fete you on your birthday in a vulgar display of weakness? That's Donald Trump."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) California:
    "Well, there's been a lot of rhetoric from Pete Hegseth, if that's his name, that "they(Marines)'ve been
    deployed." But it doesn't appear they have been, but they were making you believe that. And so I think the judge was waiting for the evidence that they actually had been deployed into Los Angeles, which they appear not to be. Of course, they're not coordinating with anybody on this. So he's just waiting for that evidence."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) California:
    "The notion that the United States active duty marines, these heroes, would be used to militarize the streets of an American city, is an abomination."

    Meanwhile, Colombian authorities charged a second person allegedly involved in the shooting attack at Uribe's rally, who has been in critical condition in hospital since Saturday.
    His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona received a tribute of military boots from the soldiers gathered outside the medical centre.
    Carlos Eduardo Mora González is accused by the prosecutor's office of participating in the logistics of the attack.
    He was charged with aggravated homicide, illegal possession of firearms and use of minors in the commission of crimes, the report added. A judge ordered on Thursday that Mora González be remanded in custody.

    STORYLINE:
    On Thursday, the California National Guard was seen guarding the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in Los Angeles during a protest against federal immigration raids.
    Later on, the National Guard was seen trading places with members from the Department of Homeland Security, and a person was taken into custody. It isn't clear why the officers apprehended the person.
    Around the same time, a federal judge granted California Gov. Gavin Newsom a temporary restraining order to have control over National Guard troops that U.S. President Donald Trump had deployed to Los Angeles to assist in immigration enforcement and controlling unrest.
    The order, which takes effect at noon Friday, said the deployment of the Guard was illegal and both violated the Tenth Amendment and exceeded Trump's statutory authority.
    The White House had no immediate comment on the ruling, but the federal government immediately filed an appeal with the Ninth Circuit court.
    U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said Trump overstepped his bounds in ordering the deployment of roughly 4,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles after protests erupted over the immigration crackdown.
    It was not immediately clear how that would change the situation on the ground.

    1. Various of buildings partially collapsed and damaged in Israeli strikes on Tehran, smoke rising
    STORYLINE:
    Israel attacked Iran’s capital early Friday, with explosions booming across Tehran as Israel said it targeted nuclear and military sites.
    The attack comes as tensions have reached new heights over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.
    The Board of Governors at the International Atomic Energy Agency for the first time in 20 years on Thursday censured Iran over it not working with its inspectors.
    Iran immediately announced it would establish a third enrichment site in the country and swap out some centrifuges for more-advanced ones.
    Israel for years has warned it will not allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon, something Tehran insists it doesn’t want — though official there have repeatedly warned it could build them.
    The U.S. has been preparing for something to happen, already pulling some diplomats from Iraq’s capital and offering voluntary evacuations for the families of U.S. troops in the wider Middle East.
    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an address on YouTube that the attacks will continue “for as many days as it takes to remove this threat.”
    U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Israel took “unilateral action against Iran” and that Israel advised the U.S. that it believed the strikes were necessary for its self-defense.

  • Israel attacked Iran’s capital early Friday, with explosions booming across Tehran - AP explains
    (13 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Jerusalem - 13 June 2025
    ++STARTS ON SOUNDBITE++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Federman, The Associated Press:
    "Israelis have been woken up by air raid sirens as the government announces a military campaign, unprecedented military campaign striking Iranian nuclear targets. The sirens went off across the country here in Israel as a preemptive measure. The government has ordered people to remain indoors and avoid large gatherings and so forth because they are expecting some sort of Iranian reprisals. Now Israel says, the military says it is striking dozens of targets inside Iran. These include attacks on the nuclear program, as well as other military targets and even military commanders. The army isn't giving too many details at this point, but Israel, of course, has long threatened to strike Iran's nuclear program. The military says that Iran has continued to develop its nuclear program and is close, closer than ever to possessing nuclear weapons. In fact, it says Iran has accumulated enough materials to build 15 nuclear weapons within short time. So, the country is saying, or the Israeli government and army is saying, that really it believes it had no choice but to strike right now. This came, of course, as the US is conducting negotiations with Iran over that nuclear program. Israel is not saying whether this attack was coordinated with the Americans, but they do say that they have a very good relationship with their partners, so they're hinting at some sort of notice or cooperation or coordination with the Americans. We are expecting a long night. The army says that this operation is expected to last for some time, so we will see how things unfold in the coming hours and even the coming days."

    STORYLINE:
    Israel attacked Iran’s capital early Friday, with explosions booming across Tehran.
    An Israeli military official said that the Israeli Air Force targeted Iranian nuclear and military sites, without identifying them. The official spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing operation.
    Air-raid sirens preventatively rang out in Israel.
    The attack comes as tensions have reached new heights over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.

    STORYLINE:
    Eyewitnesses recounted the moment an Air India plane bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday.
    “Through the smoke, we kept rescuing injured people and rushed them to the trauma centre in the civil hospital in auto rickshaws, said Indrajeet Singh Solanki, who helped nine people to the hospital.
    The plane crashed in a residential area of Ahmedabad, sending a massive fireball into the sky and killing at least 240 people, officials said.
    One passenger who was thrown from the plane survived.
    The death toll includes medical students who were in a college hostel when the plane hit the building, police said.
    Black smoke billowed from the site where the plane crashed and burst into flames near the airport in Ahmedabad, a city of more than 5 million and the capital of Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state.
    Firefighters doused the smoking wreckage of the plane, which would have been fully loaded with fuel shortly after takeoff, and adjacent multistory buildings with water. Charred bodies lay on the ground and parts of the fuselage were scattered around the site.
    This is the first crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.
    “I feel very sad. I have never felt this sad ever in my life. The atmosphere and position of this place, it makes me feel pained,” said local resident Amrit Jaiswani.
