  • Aviation expert on what investigators might be looking for in Air India crash

    ++PART COVERED BY SHOT 2++
"It's very, very, very early so we need to be careful and...From the images, we can get an idea of some of the things that the investigators are gonna look at. One of which is, was the airplane properly configured for flight? Were the slats and flaps in the proper location? That is something that's on the flight data recorder, so we'll know immediately. Now, the airplane does have a warning system that will advise the pilots with a horn as well as a message on a computer screen if the airplane's not properly configured for takeoff. But the flight path of the airplane that has been released so far brings into question that. That's one of the things that the investigators are gonna look at. The image shows the airplane with the nose rising and it continuing to sink. That says that the airplane is not making enough lift. And the slats and flaps are positioned so that the wing makes more lift at lower speeds. It's hard to tell, but with the, from looking at the aircraft from behind, you may not, it doesn't look like that the trailing edge flaps are in the position I would have expected them to be, but I'm very cautious that the image quality is not good enough to make that a conclusion. It's just an area where I know that they're going to look."

    STORYLINE:
An Air India passenger plane bound for London with more than 240 people on board crashed and exploded after takeoff Thursday in India’s northwestern city of Ahmedabad, and there were no known survivors, officials said.
Aviation safety consultant John M. Cox said one of the questions investigators will be asking is whether the Air India plane that crashed Thursday was properly configured for flight.
While he stressed it was too early to make any conclusions, the CEO of Washington DC-based Safety Operating Systems said the grainy images of the flight suggested that one area of inquiry was likely to be whether the slats and flaps were in the correct position as the plane attempted to climb.
“The image shows the airplane with the nose rising and it continuing to sink,’’ he said. “That says that the airplane is not making enough lift.’’ The slats and flaps should be positioned so that the wing makes more lift at lower speeds.
“It’s hard to tell but from looking at the aircraft from behind … it doesn’t look like that the trailing edge flaps are in the position I would have expected them to be,’’ he said. “But I’m very cautious that the image quality is not good enough to make that a conclusion. It’s just an area where I know that they’re going to look.’’

We’re here to get our rights and understand why they are withholding them."

    STORYLINE:
Dozens of retired Lebanese soldiers protested outside the prime minister's office in central Beirut Thursday to demand salary raises and monthly fuel allocations from the government amid the country's historic economic meltdown.
Hours before the protest was held, the army deployed a large number of troops to act in case rioting breaks out.
Earlier this month, the government approved a payment increase of 14 million pounds ($155) to soldiers still on duty while retirees will be given 12 million pounds ($134) as of July 1.
The retirees have been demanding a bigger raise.
"There’s no backing down when it comes to taking our rights, no matter the circumstances," said Muhammad Ali, a retiree from the Lebanese army.
The retired soldiers have been protesting for months to demand higher pay after their salaries lost value following the crash of the Lebanese pound since the country's economic crisis began in October 2019.
The small nation is in the grips of its worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history rooted in decades of corruption and mismanagement by a political class that has ruled the country since the end of the 1975-90 civil war.
Since the 2019 economic meltdown began, three-quarters of Lebanon's population, which includes 1 million Syrian refugees, now live in poverty and inflation is soaring.

    STORYLINE:
A former student who killed nine students and a teacher at a school in Austria and then took his own life planned the attack in detail, but he appears to have shot his victims at random and investigators still haven't been able to ascertain his motive, officials said Thursday.
The 21-year-old had left the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school in Graz three years ago, breaking off his studies after attending for three years, police said.
They said they knew of no personal connection between the gunman and the students he shot, but that one of the two teachers he shot had once taught him.
They were still investigating whether that was a factor.
The attack prompted Austria to declare three days of national mourning, and large numbers of candles have been laid in Graz's main square and outside the school.
The assailant, an Austrian who lived with his mother near Graz and whom officials have declined to identify, used a Mercury double-barreled shotgun and a Glock 19 handgun in the shooting.
Michael Lohnegger, the head of Styria province's criminal police office, said that he arrived at the school Tuesday morning with a backpack containing the weapons... [truncated]

  • Scenes at Gatwick Airport after London-bound Air India plane crash
    (12 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Gatwick Airport, UK - 12 June 2025
    1. Various of Gatwick airport interior
    STORYLINE:
Footage showed operations continuing as normal at Gatwick Airport where an Air India flight carrying more than 240 people that crashed shortly after take off was due to land later Thursday.
Visuals on local television channels showed smoke billowing from the crash site in what appeared to be a populated area near the airport in Ahmedabad, a city with a population of more than 5 million.
Firefighters doused the smoking wreckage of the plane, which would have been fully loaded with fuel shortly after takeoff, and an adjacent multi-story building with water. Charred bodies lay on the ground.
“The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement.
The airline said the Gatwick Airport-bound flight was carrying 242 passengers and crew. Of those, Air India said there were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian.
Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation, told The Associated Press that Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m. local time.
He said 244 people were on board and it was not immediately possible to reconcile the discrepancy with Air India's numbers.
All efforts were being made to ensure medical aid and relief support at the site, India’s Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu posted on X.
The 787 Dreamliner is a widebody, twin-engine plane. This is the first crash ever of a Boeing 787 aircraft, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.
Boeing said it was aware of the reports of the crash and was “working to gather more information.”
The aircraft was introduced in 2009 and more than 1,000 have been delivered to dozens of airlines, according to the flightradar24 website.
Air India’s chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, said at the moment “our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families.”
He said on X that the airline had set up an emergency center and support team for families seeking information about those who were on the flight.
British Cabinet minister Lucy Powell said the government will provide “all the support that it can” to those affected by the crash.
Britain has very close ties with India. There were nearly 1.9 million people in the country of Indian descent, according to the 2021 U.K. census.
The last major passenger plane crash in India was in 2020 when an Air India Express Boeing-737 skidded off a hilltop runway in southern India, killing 21 people.
The worst air disaster in India was on Nov. 12, 1996, when a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight collided midair with a Kazakhastan Airlines Flight near Charki Dadri in Haryana state, killing al... [truncated]
