    STORYLINE:
The US State Department says the United States is reducing the number of people deemed nonessential to operations in the Middle East.
Iraq's state-run Iraqi News Agency said in a statement attributed to an unnamed government official that the evacuation of some nonessential employees from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was part of "procedures related to the US diplomatic presence in a number of Middle Eastern countries, not just Iraq," and that Iraqi officials "have not recorded any security indicators that warrant an evacuation."
The State Department said it made the orders after evaluating recent tensions, which are on the rise in the region as high-stakes nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran appear to have hit an impasse.
The U.S. is also authorizing nonessential personnel and family members to leave Bahrain and Kuwait, which will give them a choice on whether to leave those countries.

  • China MOFA briefing
    (12 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 12 June 2025
    Spokesperson: Lin Jian
    Duration: 7:18
    STORYLINE:
    1. The Pentagon is reportedly reviewing the nuclear-powered submarine deal under AUKUS partnership to decide whether to scrap it. What’s China’s comment?
China has repeatedly made clear its position on the so-called trilateral security partnership between the US, UK and Australia to advance cooperation on nuclear-powered submarines and other cutting-edge military technologies. We always oppose inciting bloc confrontation and anything that amplifies the risk of nuclear proliferation and exacerbates the arms race.
    2. US President Donald Trump said in his social media post yesterday that they have reached a deal with China, including that China agreed to provide rare earth and magnets. Can you confirm any of the deals?
Yesterday afternoon, China released information on the first meeting of the China-US trade consultation mechanism. You can refer to that. Let me stress that this meeting was held under the strategic guidance of two presidents, the two sides agreed in principle on the framework of measures for implementing the consensus reached between the two presidents in their June 5 phone conversation and on enhancing the outcome of the Geneva meeting. The two sides achieved new progress in addressing each other’s concerns on economic and trade issues.
China always stays committed to its commitments and does what it said. Since we have reached a consensus, the two sides need to follow it. We hope the US will work with China to implement the important consensus reached between the two presidents in their phone calls and bring into full play the mechanism of China-US economic and trade consultation, further enhance common understanding, decrease misunderstanding and enhance cooperation through communication.
    3. Trump also said in a post that China and US have a very good relationship. Do you agree?
China always follows the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation to view and handle relations with the US. Our position on ties with the US is consistent and clear.
    4. We noted that recently, foreign tourists visiting and live‑streaming their experiences in China continue apace, with Chinese toys going wildly popular overseas. And recent opinion polls indicate that global favorability toward China has risen steadily over the past year. What does the spokesperson think about this?
A more authentic, multi-dimensional, and comprehensive image of China is being seen by more and more people. This is thanks to China steadfastly promoting high-level opening‑up, continuously facilitating the movement of Chinese and foreign nationals, and insisting on high-quality development, including accelerating the shift to new productivity and innovation-driven growth. It also stems from China consistently acting as a stabilizing force in a complex world, a decisive power, and adhering to the model of moderniz... [truncated]

    Graz - 12 June 2025
    1. Various of people attending and laying flowers and candles
    STORYLINE:
People on Thursday laid candles and flowers in the city of Graz in memory of the 10 people killed in a school shooting earlier in the week that shocked the country.
Investigators said they found a farewell letter and video, a non-functional pipe bomb and abandoned plans for a bombing in a search of the assailant's home near Graz. But they said they don't yet know what his motive was.
Nine students were killed — six girls and three boys aged between 14 and 17, one of whom had Polish citizenship — as well as a teacher, police said. Another 11 people were wounded. The attacker took his own life.
Austria has declared three days of national mourning following what appears to be the deadliest attack in its post-World War II history.

    STORYLINE:
The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s board of governors on Thursday formally found that Iran isn’t complying with its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years.
The move that could lead to further tensions and set in motion an effort to restore United Nations sanctions on Tehran later this year.
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s board, which represents the agency’s member nations, voted for the resolution at a meeting in Vienna, according to diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the outcome of the closed-doors vote.
In the draft resolution seen by The Associated Press, the board of governors renews a call on Iran to provide answers “without delay” in a long-running investigation into uranium traces found at several locations that Tehran has failed to declare as nuclear sites.
Western officials suspect that the uranium traces could provide evidence that Iran had a secret nuclear weapons program until 2003.
The resolution was put forward by France, the U.K., and Germany, as well as the United States.it.

    STORYLINE:
The Chinese government on Wednesday called for the commitment to be kept as China and the U.S. have agreed in principle on a framework to carry out an agreement they reached on resolving their trade disputes last month.
The agreement was announced at the end of two days of talks in London that wrapped up late Tuesday.
The meetings appeared to focus on finding a way to resolve disputes over mineral and technology exports that had shaken a fragile truce on trade reached in Geneva last month.
It’s not clear whether any progress was made on the more fundamental differences over China’s sizable trade surplus with the United States.
In Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian confirmed that the two countries had “achieved new progress in addressing each other’s concerns on economic and trade issues” during the meeting.
He also reaffirmed China’s commitment to developing ties with the U.S. following “the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.”
Since the Geneva talks, the U.S. and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors that power artificial intelligence, visas for Chinese students at American universities and rare earth minerals that are vital to carmakers and other industries.
