"Well, alone it doesn't make any sense to talk about what decisions would I make, because it's not something that you solve alone. You can only solve it together. And so the local government, the state and the federal government have to work together on this issue and Democrats and Republicans have to together, rather than just trying to keep us always apart and everyone hates everybody, you know. So I think bringing people together and solving those issues is, I think, the duty of the politicians. And they should stop being party servants and be more public servants."

  • Robots, AI and healthcare line up at Vivatech
    (12 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Paris, France - 11 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mustakim Hasnath, The Associated Press: ++PARTLY OVERLAID WIH SHOT 2++
"Where I'm stood now is the main exhibition hall at Vivatech in Paris, where start-ups from around the world are showcasing their latest innovations. And this year is all about AI . I've been shown AI powered robots that dance, walk, and even carry people, and assistive tech designed to help those with visual impairments navigate independently using vibrations in their shoes. There are mental health tools that use facial recognition to detect signs of depression and even home-based health stations offering full body check-ups with just a few taps all powered by AI . The emphasis isn't just on futuristic design but on practical accessible solutions, whether it's for improving daily mobility, bringing medical care into the home, or analysing personal health data in real time. But it's not just the start-ups making headlines. French President Emmanuel Macron joined Navidia's Jensen Huang and Minstrel AI's Arthur Mensch in a major keynote, a moment designed to show that Europe is serious about playing a leading role in global AI development. As the event continues, the mood here is ambitious. With the US and China dominating the AI space, Vivitech is Europe's way of saying it's not just a part of the conversation, it's there to really shape it ."

At VivaTech 2025 in Paris, artificial intelligence is no longer the future; it’s the focus.
South Korean startup Mand Robotics demonstrates an advanced, low-cost prosthetic arm, as a visitor takes part in a robot challenge, aiming to showcase speed, precision and mobility through AI control.
Crowds gather around Chinese company Unitree's display, where AI-enabled robots perform choreographed dance moves, navigate with assistance, and even transport humans.
These robots, much like the tech on display here, each rely on machine learning to interpret and adapt to the environment in real time.
These are just a few of the innovations on display at VivaTech - Europe’s largest startup and tech event - where this year, artificial intelligence has taken centre stage.
One area where AI is rapidly gaining ground is healthcare.
French-developed Buddyo is a fully integrated health management robot.
It brings preventive screening and teleconsultation into the home, aiming to reduce strain on public health systems and increase early detection.
The device’s medical-grade sensors can test blood pressure, temperature and perform ECGs.
All results are recorded and displayed through an AI-powered platform.
Another French innovation, Emobot, uses facial analysis to detect emotional shifts.
The AI interprets micro-expressions, helping to identify signs of mood disorders and suggesting personalised support.

  • Black plumes of smoke seen in Gaza as Israel continues airstrikes

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Southern Israel, overlooking Gaza Strip - 12 June 2025
    1. Various of black plume of smoke seen in Gaza from southern Israel
    STORYLINE:
A plume of black smoke was seen rising over the Gaza Strip on Thursday as Israel continued its offensive on the enclave.
Israel renewed its offensive in March after ending a ceasefire with Hamas and imposing a complete ban on imports of food, fuel, medicine and other aid before easing the blockade in mid-May.
The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostage.
They are still holding 53 captives, less than half of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israel's military campaign has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up more than half of the dead. It does not say how many of those killed were civilians or combatants.
The military campaign, which has destroyed vast areas and driven around 90% of the population from their homes, has left the territory almost entirely reliant on international aid.

    STORYLINE:
Protests over federal immigration enforcement raids and President Donald Trump's move to mobilize the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles are spreading nationwide and are expected to continue into the weekend.
While many demonstrations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have been peaceful, with marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs, others have led to clashes with police, hundreds of arrests and the use of chemical irritants to disperse crowds.
Activists say they will hold even larger demonstrations in the coming days, with “No Kings” events across the country on Saturday to coincide with Trump's planned military parade in Washington, D.C.
The Trump administration said immigration raids and deportations will continue regardless.
Hundreds of protesters marched through downtown Seattle Wednesday evening to a federal building where immigration cases are heard, with some dragging a dumpster nearby and setting it on fire.
The building was covered in graffiti, with “Abolish ICE Now” written in large letters across its front window. Some protesters moved electric bikes and cones to block its entrance.
Dozens of officers squared off with protesters near the federal building, with some shooting pepper spray. Officers worked to move the crowd away from the federal building, with some protesters throwing fireworks and rocks at officers, according to the Seattle Police Department.

"My children cried last night because they wanted dinner, and by God there is no dinner in the house. I have a sick child who is 4-years-old. They are crying for me, wanting to have dinner, so I was forced to go out there to the aid point to bring it to my children. In front of us is shooting, injuries and martyrs. We returned with nothing. We hope to live with dignity. We hope that someone will stand with us. They said, come here, there is aid. We want someone to stand with us. We want countries to stand with us. May God deal with the people who refuse to stand with us."
    3. Various of people walking back carrying aid
    4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel Rahman Al-Shaer, from Khan Younis: ++SOUNDBITE IS OVERLAID BY SHOT5++
"I went six times, and I never received aid, not once. And we come to buy what people bring. The prices are outrageous. You cannot buy anything. In fact, we do not have money to buy."
    5. Various of thousands of people walking back from distribution aid point
    STORYLINE:
Scores of people returned to Gaza's southern city of Khan Younis on Wednesday from distribution centres in Rafah, with some carrying aid parcels and boxes on their shoulders.
One elderly man with an injured leg was carried on a cart.
Meanwhile, many came back empty-handed, including Abdel Rahman Al-Shaer, who said he went there six times and always came back with nothing.
He said people bring items to sell in the market at high prices that he can’t afford because he doesn’t have any money.
Hazem Abu Linda, who came back with a food parcel that he carried on his back, said that most people who go to the centres resell the aid they take and that if merchants hadn’t monopolized the markets and sold food at affordable prices, then no one would go to these centres.
“I have children who were screaming today because they wanted to eat, but we have nothing. I have a sick 4-year-old as well. So I was forced to go there for the first time to get food for my children. I went there and saw in front of me shootings, injured people, and martyrs. We went home empty-handed,” said Mahmoud al-Hindi.
127 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since the rollout of a new food distribution system last month, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
Israel and the United States say the new system is designed to circumvent Hamas, but it has been rejected by the U.N. and major aid groups.
Experts have warned that Israel's blockade and ongoing military campaign have put Gaza at risk of famine.
Gaza’s roughly 2 million Palestinians almost completely rely on international aid because nearly all food production capabilities have been destroyed.

  • Officers on horseback in Los Angeles charge toward protesters
    (12 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Los Angeles - 11 June 2025
    1. Police on horseback charge toward protesters, who scramble away
    STORYLINE:
The Los Angeles Police Department has made nearly 400 arrests and detentions since Saturday in connection with immigration protests.
The vast majority arrests have been for failing to leave the area in defiance of requests from law enforcement, according to police.
There have been a handful of more serious charges including for assault against police officers and for possession of a Molotov cocktail and a gun.
A demonstration in Los Angeles’ civic center just before start of the second night of the city’s downtown curfew briefly turned chaotic with police in riot gear —many on horseback— charged at a group, striking them with wooden rods and later fired crowd control projectiles, including one that struck a woman who writhed in pain on the ground.
After the curfew went into effect a handful of arrests were made before the area cleared out.
