    STORYLINE:
Beach Boys fans honored Brian Wilson by leaving flowers at the band's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The recording artist died at 82. Wilson’s family posted news of his death to his website and social media accounts Wednesday.
The eldest and last surviving of three musical brothers — Brian played bass, Carl lead guitar and Dennis drums — he and his fellow Beach Boys rose in the 1960s from local California band to national hitmakers to international ambassadors of surf and sun.
Wilson himself was celebrated for his gifts and pitied for his demons. He was one of rock’s great romantics, a tormented man who in his peak years embarked on an ever-steeper path to aural perfection.

So I do thank Chief Slosar, I thank Lieutenant Colonel Campbell, U.S. attorney Ryan Ellison for being here, just to show that we are all 100% behind this. And just to be clear, these NDAs are not going away. The charges related to these NDAs from my office are not going away, they make the country safer. And when people feel safe, they can thrive, not just survive. And that's what we want for the American people. We want the American people to be able to enjoy life, enjoy liberty, and pursue happiness. That's what this does. That's was stopping illegal immigration does. That's what total eradication of Mexican drug cartels does."

    STORYLINE:
U.S. troops have begun directly detaining immigrants accused of trespassing on a recently designated national defense zone along the southern U.S. border, in an escalation of the military's enforcement role, authorities said Wednesday.
U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Chad Campbell described in detail the first detentions by troops last week of three immigrants accused of trespassing in a national defense area near Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
Those migrants were quickly turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and are now among more than 1,400 migrants to have been charged with illegally entering militarized areas along that border, under a new border enforcement strategy from President Donald Trump's administration.
Troops are prohibited from conducting civilian law enforcement on U.S. soil under the Posse Comitatus Act. But an exception known as the military purpose doctrine allows it in some instances.
Trump has designated two national military defense areas along the southern U.S. border for New Mexico and a 60-mile (97-kilometer) stretch of western Texas, from El Paso to Fort Hancock, while transferring much of the land from the Interior Department to oversight by the Department of Defense for three years.
The Trump administration plans eventually to add more militarized zones along the border, a military spokesman said Wednesday at a news conference in El Paso.
Proponents of the militarized zones, including federal prosecutors, say the approach augments traditional efforts by Customs and Border Protection and other law enforcement agencies to secure the border.
A judge in New Mexico has dismissed more than 100 national security charges against immigrants, finding little evidence that immigrants knew about the national defense areas. Those migrants still confronted charges of illegal entry to the U.S.

    STORYLINE:
At least 14 people were killed in the Southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday when they were on their way to get aid.
According to Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies, more than a dozen people were killed in the area of Rafah where people have been moving almost daily to receive aid in some of the hubs operated by the U.S. backed company, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Also on Wednesday, the Palestinian death toll from the 20-month Israel-Hamas war has climbed past 55,000, the Gaza Health Ministry said.
The ministry doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants, but has said that women and children make up more than half the dead.
It’s a grim milestone in the war that began with Hamas’ attack into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and shows no sign of ending.
Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, accusing the militants of hiding among civilians, because they operate in populated areas.
The ministry says 55,104 people have been killed since the start of the war and 127,394 wounded.
Many more are believed to be buried under the rubble or in areas that are inaccessible to local medics.
The Health Ministry is part of Gaza’s Hamas-run government, but staffed by medical professionals who maintain and publish detailed records.
Its tolls from previous conflicts have largely aligned with those of independent experts, though Israel has questioned the ministry's figures.

    8. Various flood-damaged house surrounded by debris
    STORYLINE:
At least 49 people were confirmed dead Wednesday as floods devastated one of South Africa’s poorest provinces, and officials said the toll was expected to rise as more bodies are recovered in the search for missing people.
The floods hit the largely rural Eastern Cape province in the southeast of the country early Tuesday after an especially strong weather front brought heavy rains, gale force winds and also snow in some parts.
The death toll included six high school students who were washed away when their school bus was caught in floodwaters on Tuesday near a river close to the town of Mthatha, which was especially hard hit and at the center of the worst flooding.
Four other students were among the missing, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said at a briefing on Wednesday.
Authorities found the school bus earlier Wednesday, but it was empty. Three of the students were rescued on Tuesday when they were found clinging to trees and crying out for help, the provincial government said.
A driver and another adult who were on the bus with the schoolchildren were among the dead.
Search and rescue operations would continue for a third day on Thursday, authorities said, though they didn't give details on how many people might still be missing. They said they were working with families to find out who was still unaccounted for.
Eastern Cape provincial government officials said hundreds of families were left homeless and in temporary shelters in that province after their houses were washed away or broken apart, while at least 58 schools and 20 hospitals were damaged by the floods, which mostly affected Mthatha and the surrounding district.
Other houses were left submerged under water. Cars and debris that were carried away by the floods were left strewn in piles as the rain stopped and the water began to subside.
South Africa is vulnerable to strong weather fronts that blow in from the Indian and Southern Oceans.
Poor areas with informal housing are often the worst affected and where the majority of fatalities occur.

    STORYLINE:
Japan’s Princess Kako of Akishino, a niece of Emperor Naruhito, continued her visit in Brazil’s capital of Brasilia on Wednesday.
The younger daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko addressed Congress and thanked Brazilians for hosting Japanese immigrants for more than a century.
Her trip, which started on June 5, marks the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
"I hope that the cooperative relationship between the two countries will be further deepened in the future and will continue for a long time," Kako told Brazilian lawmakers.
Congress Speaker Hugo Motta told the princess that he hopes to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and that Brazil's ethanol exports can help reduce Japan's reliance on fossil fuels.
Kako also had a private ceremony with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the latest leg of her 11-day tour of the South American nation.
Brazil has the largest population of people of Japanese descent in the world, estimated at about 2.7 million.
About half of those live in Sao Paulo state, official figures show, where the princess last week received the state's highest honor from Gov. Tarcisio de Freitas.
Emperor Naruhito has no male children, which makes his brother Akishino, Princess Kako’s father, the first successor in line. Japan’s tradition does not allow women to take the throne.

"In the beginning, I felt so much frustration towards the world. I was being rebellious. And I managed to sublimate all those feelings into my art. Ever since, I've continued to create artworks. As I got older, I couldn't just continue as a childish rebel. I started to think about how to be more empathetic to others. The biggest turning point was the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. After that, my themes changed. Sulky kids became a little more grown-up with merciful expressions to their look. My style shifted from just venting my frustrations to something that could offer hope to others. It's not the paintings evolving, but humans evolving. It made me feel like that’s what it really means to grow
    as a person."
