  • Palestinians speak of their ordeal as they return from aid distribution centres in Rafah
    (11 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Khan Younis, Southern Gaza Strip - 11 June 2025
    1. Various of people heading to receive aid
    2. Various of injured man sitting in cart
    3. Various of people carrying bags of aid and walking back
    4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hazem Abu Linda, displaced man:
"We go for two reasons: first, because we are unable (to buy) because the prices are high, and because of the monopoly of the merchants, and the goods are very expensive. If the merchants cooperated with the community and lowered the prices, no one would go (to the American aid distribution points). And if someone goes after that, everyone will receive it (the aid) smoothly, because the price of the thing is negligible. 90 percent of those who go take (the aid) to sell it, and 10 percent are the ones who return in order to feed their children."
    5. Various of people carrying bags of aid and walking back
    6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mahmoud al-Hindi, from Khan Younis:
"My children cried last night because they wanted dinner, and by God there is no dinner in the house. I have a sick child who is 4-years-old. They are crying for me, wanting to have dinner, so I was forced to go out there to the aid point to bring it to my children. In front of us is shooting, injuries and martyrs. We returned with nothing. We hope to live with dignity. We hope that someone will stand with us. They said, "Come here, there is aid. We want someone to stand with us. We want countries to stand with us. May God deal with the people who refuse to stand with us."
    7. Various of thousands of people walking back from distribution aid point
    8. Various of people carrying bags of aid
    9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel Rahman Al-Shaer, from Khan Younis:
"I went six times, and I never received aid, not once. and we come to buy what people bring. The prices are outrageous. You cannot buy anything. In fact, we do not have money to buy."
    10. Various of thousands of people walking back from distribution aid point
    STORYLINE:
Scores of people returned to Khan Younis on Wednesday from distribution centres in Rafah, with some carrying aid parcels and boxes on their shoulders.
One elderly man with an injured leg was carried on a cart.
Meanwhile, many came back empty-handed, including Abdel Rahman Al-Shaer, who said he went there six times and always came back with nothing.
He said people bring items to sell in the market at high prices that he can’t afford because he doesn’t have any money.
Hazem Abu Linda, who came back with a food parcel that he carried on his back, said that most people who go to the centres resell the aid they take and that if merchants hadn’t monopolized the markets and sold food at affordable prices, then no one would go to these centres.
“I have children who were screaming today because they wanted to eat, but we have nothing. I have a sick 4-year-old as well. So I was forced to go there for the first time to get food for my children. I went there and saw... [truncated]

"Even to his most recent recordings, I've always been a huge fan, and I always wonder, too, what the world would be like musically had, you know, I know this is a hot button issue, but I hold fast. If Mike Love didn't try to stonewall, you know, 'Smile.' If that was released in 1967, how different the musical landscape would be today is just something I often think about. But yeah, it's, it's just crazy how one person from a modest upbringing in Hawthorne, California became America's band."

"There are more than a dozen House Republicans who have indicated that they don't support cutting Medicaid for the people that they represent. Those House Republicans have a chance to stop this bill from even being sent over to the United States Senate by voting no on the rule today."
    3. Cutaway of press conference
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. House Minority Leader:
"It's strange to me that you have Republicans who voted for a bill that they apparently dislike and then publicly sent a letter to their Senate Republican colleagues to say stop these provisions from ever becoming law. I mean, that's the height of irresponsibility. Vote yes, and then hope for the best. No, you have a job to do in the House of Representatives. And now you have a second chance."

At least 14 people were killed in the Southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday when they were on their way to get aid.
According to Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies, more than a dozen people were killed in the area of Rafah where people have been moving almost daily to receive aid in some of the hubs operated by the U.S. backed company Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Also on Wednesday, the Palestinian death toll from the 20-month Israel-Hamas war has climbed past 55,000, the Gaza Health Ministry said.
The ministry doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants, but has said that women and children make up more than half the dead.
It’s a grim milestone in the war that began with Hamas’ attack into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and shows no sign of ending. Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, accusing the militants of hiding among civilians, because they operate in populated areas.

    STORYLINE:
As the nation's capital cleans up from the culmination of World Pride this past weekend, focus now shifts to a very different massive event — Saturday's military parade to honor the 250th birthday of the Army and the 79th birthday of President Donald Trump.
Matt McCool with the Secret Service's Washington Field office, who said more than 18 miles of “anti-scale fencing” would be erected and “multiple drones” would be in the air. The entire District of Columbia is normally a no-fly zone for drones.
Army officials have estimated around 200,000 attendees for the evening military parade.
A total of 175 magnetometers would be used at security checkpoints controlling access to the daytime birthday festival and the nighttime parade. Metropolitan Police Department chief Pamela Smith predicted “major impacts to traffic” and advised attendees to arrive early and consider forgoing cars for the Metro.
The military parade has been designated a National Special Security Event — similar to a presidential inauguration or state funeral. That status is reserved for events that draw large crowds and potential mass protests. It calls for an enhanced degree of high-level coordination among D.C. officials, the FBI, Capitol Police and Washington’s National Guard contingent — with the Secret Service taking the lead.
The Army birthday celebration had already been planned for months. But earlier this spring, Trump announced his intention to transform the event — which coincides with his 79th birthday — into a massive military parade complete with 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through the city streets.
Multiple counter-protests of varying sizes are planned for Saturday, with the largest being a mass march to the White House. Officials say they are also on alert for signs that the immigration-related clashes b... [truncated]
