STORYLINE:

Los Angeles police swiftly enforced a downtown curfew Tuesday night, making arrests moments after it took effect, while deploying officers on horseback and using crowd control projectiles to break up a group of hundreds demonstrating against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Members of the National Guard stood watch behind plastic shields, but did not appear to participate in the arrests.

Hours later, many of the protesters had dispersed, although sporadic confrontations continued that were much smaller than in previous nights. Officials said the curfew was necessary to stop vandalism and theft by agitators looking to cause trouble.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom earlier accused Trump of drawing a “military dragnet” across the nation’s second-largest city with his escalating use of the National Guard. He also deployed Marines, though none were seen on the streets Tuesday.

The curfew doesn’t apply to residents who live in the designated area, people who are homeless, credentialed media or public safety and emergency officials, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell.

McDonnell said that police had made 197 arrests on Tuesday, including 67 who were taken into custody for unlawfully occupying part of the 101 freeway.

Several businesses were broken into Monday, though authorities didn't say if the looting was tied to the protests.

The vast majority of arrests have been for failing to disperse, while a few others were for assault with a deadly weapon, looting, vandalism and attempted murder for tossing a Molotov cocktail. Seven police officers were reportedly injured, and at least two were taken to a hospital and released.

For generations, stone has been more than just a building material, Abu Haikal says.

"It is the oldest witness and the most truthful narrator of the stories of this land. From stone, we built our homes, pressed our olives and ground our wheat — and it stood as a barricade against the occupation," he said.

He was referring to stones when thrown by Palestinian youth at Israeli troops during protests or military incursions.

Southern Israel (looking into Gaza) - 11 June 2025

++BLACK FRAMES++

2. Second plume of smoke

STORYLINE:

A large plume of smoke was seen rising over the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, followed by a second plume approximately 10 minutes later.

As the war continues, the Palestinian death toll from the 20-month Israel-Hamas war has climbed past 55,000, the Gaza Health Ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants, but has said that women and children make up more than half the dead.

It’s a grim milestone in the war that began with Hamas’ attack into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and shows no sign of ending. Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, accusing the militants of hiding among civilians, because they operate in populated areas.

The ministry says 55,104 people have been killed since the start of the war and 127,394 wounded. Many more are believed to be buried under the rubble or in areas that are inaccessible to local medics.

The Health Ministry is part of Gaza’s Hamas-run government, but staffed by medical professionals who maintain and publish detailed records. Its tolls from previous conflicts have largely aligned with those of independent experts, though Israel has questioned the ministry's figures.

Israeli forces have destroyed vast areas of Gaza, displaced about 90% of its population and in recent weeks have transformed more than half of the coastal territory into a military buffer zone that includes the now mostly uninhabited southern city of Rafah.

STORYLINE:

STORYLINE:

Nvidia's CEO kicked off a major tech fair in France on Wednesday, unveiling a slew of announcements from the AI chipmaker and introducing an AI robot to one of Europe's biggest technology industry conferences.

Huang invited a small robot called Grek onto the stage to demonstrate.

Grek, a short two-legged robot, was trained to walk in an AI powered digital simulation.

Reminiscent of Star Wars droids, Grek jumped, danced and appeared to take photos of the audience.

Huang gave a keynote speech at VivaTech in Paris and was scheduled to appear on stage later the same day with French President Emmanuel Macron and the CEO of Mistral AI, a French homegrown artificial intelligence startup darling.

In his keynote, Huang talked about the demand from world leaders to develop the infrastructure underpinning artificial intelligence.

The Paris show marks Huang's second European appearance this week, after a visit to London Tech Week on Monday where he joined British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for an opening session.

Huang's European tour, which also includes a stop in Germany later in the week, coincides with a flurry of Nvidia news about investments and partnerships.

Sir Paul McCartney: "You will hear that the reason why the seal hunt has to go on is that the seals eat the cod and therefore deplete the supplies of cod in the area, therefore ruining the fishermen''s living, but in actual fact that isn''t true. It''s over fishing that has lead to the demise of the cod and these harp seals actually eat some of the predators of the cod so they are part of a very delicate eco-balance."

Sir Paul McCartney: "The Canadian people have been polled and asked what they think of the seal hunt and the majority of the Canadian people are opposed to it so it''s not their fault. It''s just an old tradition that has gone on for a long time and it''s time it stopped."
