    STORYLINE:
On Monday, President Trump ordered another 2,000 National Guard troops be sent to Los Angeles hours after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth deployed 700 Marines to the city.
Those orders brought the total U.S. military personnel mobilized in the Los Angeles area since large protests against immigration raids began on Friday to 4,700.
Commander of Task Force 51 Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman oversees the deployed personnel, some of which are already on duty and performing operations in different locations of L.A.. Others will start going through training to prepare for their mission.
“And our mission is to protect federal agencies, our federal partners, their personnel as they conduct their federal mission and even more in particular as they do, they do the enforcement of federal law, and then also to protect all federal assets and federal facilities that are located in the locations where there have been demonstrations lately,” said Sherman.
Sherman confirmed that this means that Guard troops and Marines will protect ICE agents when conducting their raids.
While carrying out their operations, the military personnel would be permitted to detain people, but not arrest them.
“They are strictly there to detain, to wait for law enforcement, to come, and handle those demonstrators,” said Sherman.
The deployment is the first time in decades that a state’s National Guard was activated without a request from its governor, a significant escalation against those who have sought to hinder the administration’s mass deportation efforts.

    STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday that his country stood by Denmark in the face of US President Donald Trump's claims to ownership of Greenland.
"The principle of the inviolability of borders is enshrined in international law and is not up for discussion,” said Merz in Berlin after a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. “We stand closely by our Danish friends on these issues and will continue to do so.”
In recent months, US President Trump has repeatedly spoken of wanting to take control of Greenland, which is largely autonomous but part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
He has also not ruled out the use of the military.
In the course of the controversy, US Vice President J.D. Vance traveled to the American military base Pituffik in northern Greenland at the end of March.
Frederiksen said that the sovereignty of states is a core element of the world order.
"Sovereignty of states, the territorial integrity, and by the way the future of Greenland can only be decided in Greenland by the Greenlandic people."
She added that she thought Trump was "serious" when it comes to Greenland "and I have to say that so are we."
In regard to the US-China trade agreement, Merz welcomed it and said that he hopes an agreement with the US on tariffs will be reached soon.

    STORYLINE:

[truncated]
