    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael R. Sisak, The Associated Press:
"Harvey Weinstein has been convicted again, guilty of one count and not guilty of another at his MeToo retrial in New York City. It was an extraordinary day in court. Jurors returning a verdict on two of the three counts against Weinstein while remaining divided on that last count. The jury convicted Weinstein of criminal sex act for forcibly performing oral sex on Miriam Haley, a former TV and movie production assistant back in 2006. As they prepared to bring the case, prosecutors added a previously uncharged allegation. They were retrying him on those other charges, but they added one that hadn't been part of that original case. That was the allegation that Weinstein committed the same crime, criminal sex act, with Kaja Sokola, a Polish model, also in 2006. But on Wednesday, the jury said that it had found Weinstein not guilty of assaulting her."

    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael R. Sisak, The Associated Press:
"Weinstein's conviction nonetheless could put the 73-year-old ex-movie mogul behind bars for decades. Weinstein's conviction and the acquittal on that other count capped a wild day of deliberations. The jury foreperson complained again that he was being bullied by other jurors. Weinstein's lawyer then asked for a mistrial, and Weinstein himself addressed the court while jurors were out of the room. He implored the judge to end the case without a verdict. He said, "my life is on the line, and you know what? It's not fair. It's time, it's time. It's time to say this trial is over." Just minutes later, the jury came back into the room and delivered its verdict. Afterward, Weinstein sat at the defense table as jurors walked by. He had his hands clasped to his chin, watching them go. The judge advised him and his lawyers not to make any comments until that last charge is decided. Jury deliberations on that resume on Thursday."

About 700 Marines are still undergoing civil disturbance training at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach in Orange County, California, said Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, head of the task force that’s overseeing the deployment of the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles.
Sherman wouldn’t speculate about when the Marines might join the 2,000 or so Guard troops that have been deployed in downtown areas to protect federal buildings during sometimes violent demonstrations against President Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Another 2,000 Guard troops were expected to mobilize on Thursday, he said during a news conference.
Guard troops were seen training for crowd control at a site in Los Alamitos on Wednesday.
Sherman is commander of Task Force 51, which is overseeing the more than 4,000 Guard troops and 700 Marines who have been deployed to Los Angeles to provide security during the protests.
All of the troops deployed to the protests are going through several days of training on civil unrest, and those providing security on the raids go through additional instruction, legal training and rehearsals with the agents doing the enforcement.

Weinstein was initially convicted five years ago, but that conviction was overturned.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He told the court Wednesday that the trial was not fair.

  • At least 49 people have died in flooding in South Africa with toll expected to rise

"Sadly, a scholar transport minibus we indicated transporting children was also swept by water, leading to loss of life. Thus far, the search and rescue operations led by SAPS (South African Police Service) in and around Mthatha are searching for other scholars. On our way here, we came across that situation when another girl was identified, and we were there on site, along that river stream."

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Oscar Mabuyane, Eastern Cape Premier:
"We are all on the ground assessing the damage to support relief operations and engage directly with affected families as we are now from two centres where we are interacting with our people who are currently kept in those centres. We reiterate our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and call on residents to remain vigilant and follow guidance from the local disaster management teams."
    STORYLINE:
At least 49 people were confirmed dead Wednesday as floods devastated one of South Africa’s poorest provinces, and officials said the toll was expected to rise as more bodies are recovered in the search for missing people.
The floods hit the largely rural Eastern Cape province in the southeast of the country early Tuesday after an especially strong weather front brought heavy rains, gale force winds and also snow in some parts.
“The numbers are just escalating an hour after hour. So the situation is so bad on the ground.” Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane told reporters at a briefing, adding that it was one of the worst weather-related disasters his province had experienced.
The death toll included six high school students who were washed away when their school bus was caught in floodwaters on Tuesday near a river close to the town of Mthatha, which was especially hard hit and at the centre of the worst flooding. Four other students were among the missing, Mabuyane said.
Authorities found the school bus earlier Wednesday, but it was empty. Three of the students were rescued on Tuesday when they were found clinging to trees and crying out for help, the provincial government said.
A driver and another adult who were on the bus with the schoolchildren were among the dead.
Search and rescue operations would continue for a third day on Thursday, authorities said, though they didn't give details on how many people might still be missing. They said they were working with families to find out who was still unaccounted for.

"It (Hayward Gallery) is a building with a very intricate, interesting, and organic structure. So, when I thought about how to install my 40 years of work into this space, I decided not to do it in chronological order. Instead, I wanted to place pieces of different sizes and different materials side by side. I thought it would be interesting to create an exhibition that’s not lined up in a single row, but in more organic way where some works are installed higher, some lower, some large works next to small ones, and so on."

    7. Various of installation "Fountain of Life" 2001/2014/2022
    8. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Yoshitomo Nara, artist:
"My work is really easy to understand. It’s something that both children and adults can grasp and perspectives depend on their age. I think kids might take it in very superficially, almost like they’re looking at cartoons or illustrations. For adults with deeper life experiences, I think they would see various layers within the paintings according to their age. So how they perceive my art would be different according to each person’s experiences or emotions. If you look at the same painting every day, it will show a completely different face each time. So, rather than saying, “I want you to see my work in this way,” I’m more interested in hearing how people from children to adults will view my work."

"After that (Japan's 2011 earthquake disasters), my themes changed without noticing. It feels like sulky kids grew up a little bit with rather merciful expressions to their look. My style shifted from just venting my frustrations to something that could offer hope to others, which happened unintentionally and naturally. I think that’s not about the paintings evolving, but about humans evolving. It made me feel like that’s what it really means to grow as a person."

    15. Close of "No Nukes", 1998
    16. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Yoshitomo Nara, artist:
"In America, for example, as an extension of the Civil Rights movement, there were many musicians against the Vietnam War, from folk songs to rock music, using the loudness of rock music to protest. I think Jimi Hendrix is probably the most famous of them all. That’s what I grew up seeing, so those "anti-war" and “no nukes” sentiments just naturally got absorbed into me - they became part of who I am. So rather than feeling some sense of mission, those messages just come out of me naturally."
