STORYLINE:

Airdropped aid continues to fall in the central Gaza Strip Wednesday with desperate Palestinians struggling to collect what they could as food parcels land in far areas or in the so-called red zones controlled by the Israeli military.

Palestinians cheered when they saw a plane flying over the central town of Zawaida and dropping aid parcels.

Associated Press footage showed parachutes, carrying aid, opening in air.

When aid fell to the ground, hundreds of Palestinians rushed to collect whatever they could.

Many criticized the practice as shameful and humiliating.

“I wish they deliver it (aid) through the crossings,” Rabah Rabah, a Palestinian man from the al-Balah, said as he waited for the airdropping of aid.

“This is not a human practice.”

Infighting often erupts among people trying to chase the airdropped aid.

AP footage showed a man with a knife trying to seize a package of aid from another man, with a woman screaming: “Shame on you.”

Others were seen engaged in fistfighting around a parcel of aid.

One parcel fell over a tent sheltering displaced people, said eyewitness Ahmed Fleifel, a young man from Deir al-Balah.

At least one person was wounded, and taken to hospital in a private vehicle, according to AP footage.

STORYLINE:

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says bases in Indiana and New Jersey can house detained immigrants without affecting military readiness — a step toward potentially detaining thousands of people on bases on U.S. soil.

Hegseth notified members of Congress from both states this week of the proposal to temporarily house detained immigrants at Camp Atterbury in Indiana, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.

President Donald Trump has moved to aggressively detain and deport people in the country illegally, a push that has swept up large numbers of immigrants, including many with no prior criminal records, and forced federal authorities to find places to house them.

Hegseth said the presence of the detainees would not negatively affect the bases’ operations or training. Officials have not said when detainees could begin arriving at the facilities or if other military bases are under consideration.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan said there are about 60,000 beds currently available for detained immigrants and the goal is to expand to 100,000.

Democratic Rep. Andre Carson of Indiana said his questions about detainee conditions have gone unanswered by the Trump administration.

He cited concerns raised about conditions at other facilities and said, “The fact that ICE has detained so many individuals that they now need to expand detention space in Indiana is disturbing.”

South Africa's trade minister said Monday that U.S. reciprocal tariffs have put an estimated 30,000 jobs at risk in South Africa.

Simphiwe Hamilton, Director-General of the South Africa Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, told reporters that an array of sectors will be affected by the incoming tariff of 30%, specifically naming the automotive and agricultural sectors.

"We are sitting at approximately 30,000 jobs that could be affected by this, if it were to be mismanaged in any manner," said Hamilton.

STORYLINE:

Robot teams from China and other countries are training at the speed skating venue of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

They are preparing for the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games which are scheduled to take place between August 14 and 17 in Beijing.

Thirty robot teams from countries such as the United States, Brazil, Germany, and Portugal have been registered to play in the soccer competition, according to the organizer.

Playing on Monday’s training was the Shanhai Team from the China Agricultural University, which was the runner-up of the RoboCup Humanoid Robot Soccer World Cup in Brazil in June.

Two groups of humanoid robots faced off in fully autonomous 5-on-5 soccer matches powered entirely by artificial intelligence.

Equipped with advanced visual sensors, the robots were able to identify the ball and navigate the field with agility.

They were also designed to stand up on their own after falling.

Yang Shaoshuai, leader of the Shanhai Team, told reporters that most of the teams in the competition are using robots provided by Chinese company Booster Robotics.

“This hardware platform is very powerful with dribbling and ball control algorithms, so we don't need to spend too much effort on these aspects,” said Yang.

“We mainly make adjustments to the code in terms of perception, positioning, and decision-making.”

While recognizing the gap between robots and humans, Yang said the robots are growing fast.
