STORYLINE:

Robot teams from China and other countries are training at the speed skating venue of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

They are preparing for the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games which are scheduled to take place between August 14 and 17 in Beijing.

Thirty robot teams from countries such as the United States, Brazil, Germany, and Portugal have been registered to play in the soccer competition, according to the organizer.

Playing on Monday’s training was the Shanhai Team from the China Agricultural University, which was the runner-up of the RoboCup Humanoid Robot Soccer World Cup in Brazil in June.

Two groups of humanoid robots faced off in fully autonomous 5-on-5 soccer matches powered entirely by artificial intelligence.

Equipped with advanced visual sensors, the robots were able to identify the ball and navigate the field with agility.

They were also designed to stand up on their own after falling.

Yang Shaoshuai, leader of the Shanhai Team, told reporters that most of the teams in the competition are using robots provided by Chinese company Booster Robotics.

“This hardware platform is very powerful with dribbling and ball control algorithms, so we don't need to spend too much effort on these aspects,” said Yang.

“We mainly make adjustments to the code in terms of perception, positioning, and decision-making.”

While recognizing the gap between robots and humans, Yang said the robots are growing fast.

The Yazidi community commemorated over the weekend the 11th anniversary of the Islamic State's rampage through the Sinjar region in northern Iraq in August 2014.

The militants destroyed villages, and religious sites, lined men up and shot them before kidnapping thousands of women and children and trading them in modern day chattel slavery.

The United Nations called the attacks genocide.

Mourners and survivors gathered on Sunday in Sinjar to mark the painful anniversary and remember the victims.

They cried while listening to funeral music and looked at art portraying the brutal attacks.

STORYLINE:

Airdropped aid continues to fall in the central Gaza Strip Monday with desperate Palestinians struggling to collect what they could as food parcels land in far areas or in the so-called red zones controlled by the Israeli military.

Palestinians cheered when they saw a plane flying over the central town of Zawaida and dropping aid parcels.

Associated Press footage showed parachutes, carrying aid, opening in air.

When aid fell to the ground, hundreds of Palestinians rushed to collect whatever they could.

Many criticized the practice as shameful and humiliating.

“I wish they deliver it (aid) through the crossings,” Rabah Rabah, a Palestinian man from the al-Balah, said as he waited for the airdropping of aid.

“This is not a human practice.”

Infighting often erupts among people trying to chase the airdropped aid.

AP footage showed a man with a knife trying to seize a package of aid from another man, with a woman screaming: “Shame on you.”

Others were seen engaged in fistfighting around a parcel of aid.

Assad al-Qaraan, a man from Deir al-Balah, slammed the airdropping of aid as ineffective.

António Ribeiro and his colleagues from Portugal's University of Minho formed the robot team just two weeks ago and they are loosing no time in training them.

Ribeiro said his team was given the same robots from Booster Robotics, but they need to install their own software to improve the soccer skills of the robots.

They even made custom feet for the robots.

“Obviously there's some low-level PID control on the motors, but we are basically doing the software from the ground up, from scratch,” he said.

China is stepping up efforts to develop AI-powered humanoid robots, using sports competitions like marathons, boxing, and football as a real-world proving ground.

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man and apprehended three others during an overnight raid in Qabatiya in the occupied West Bank.

On Monday morning a hospital official in Jenin said the unidentified man’s body had arrived with burns as Qabatiya residents surveyed the aftermath of damaged cars and buildings.

Palestinians gathered in Jenin’s morgue to pay respects, where staff said they were working on identifying the man.

Israel’s military said the man shot was armed and that the arrests took place while its forces were pursuing suspected terrorists.

There has been a rise in Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank since Hamas’ attack on southern Israel started a war in the Gaza Strip almost 22 months ago. Palestinian militant attacks on Israelis have also increased.

The United Nations Human Rights Office last week called on Israel to end “a pattern of the use of unnecessary and disproportionate force.”

STORYLINE:

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman says an IAEA official will visit Iran within the next 10 days, the first such visit to Iran after its nuclear sites were attacked by Israel and the United States in June.

"A visit by an IAEA official to Tehran will occur within less than 10 days," Esmail Baghaei, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, told a news conference in Tehran on Monday.

The 12-day air war by Israel and the U.S. severely damaged Iran's nuclear sites and led to the deaths of nearly 1,100 people including military chiefs and commanders.

A ceasefire has been in force since shortly after the airstrikes targeted Iran’s major nuclear facilities.

Inspectors left Iran following the war, limiting the U.N nuclear watchdog ability to assess the damage and investigate the fate of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile.

Bagahei also condemned the recent sanctions by the U.S against its shipping network that helps ship Iranian oil to China.
