    STORYLINE:
K-pop superstars RM and V are the latest members of BTS to be discharged from South Korea's military after fulfilling their mandatory service.
They each saluted upon their release Tuesday in Chuncheon City as about 200 fans, some of whom traveled from Mexico, Turkey and Brazil, cheered.
Reina Lorena Quintero Sevilla spent nearly 18 hours on a plane from Mexico City. "I swear, it didn’t feel that long because we’re so excited to be here, to watch the boys get released, excited to be in South Korea, in the hometowns of our boys, who we love, who we adore,” she said.
RM and V began their service in December 2023, while three other BTS members — Jin, J-Hope and Suga — were already months into their conscription.
Jin, the oldest member of the K-pop supergroup, was discharged from the army in June 2024. J-Hope was discharged in October. Jimin and JungKook are scheduled to be discharged Wednesday.
The seventh member, Suga, is fulfilling his duty as a social service agent, an alternative to military service. He is to be released later this month.
The seven BTS members plan to reunite as a group sometime in 2025.
In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18-21 months of military service under a conscription system meant to deter aggression from rival North Korea.
The law gives special exemptions to athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers if they have obtained top prizes in certain competitions and are assessed to have enhanced national prestige. K-pop stars and other entertainers aren’t subject to such privileges.
The BTS members were able to postpone their service, however, after the National Assembly revised the Military Service Act, allowing K-pop stars to delay their enlistment until age 30.
There was heated public debate over whether to offer special exemptions for BTS members, until the group’s management agency announced in 2022 that all seven members would fulfill their duties.

    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Snoop Dogg, recording artist:
(Reporter: "You do everything, you have so many side quests. Why is it so important for you to be so versatile?")
"I mean, that's what life is about, about taking chances and finding out who you are and being the best version of yourself. And if you can reinvent yourself, you should. You should always find ways to be better. And I think me doing so much is me finding ways to better. I love living life and I love doing work. And my work just happens to be fun and it's visible so people can see it."
(Reporter: "So what's been your favorite side quest thus far?")
    Snoop Dogg, recording artist:
"Probably being a grandfather because I can do it when I want to, I don't have to do it because I have to."
(Reporter: "So, have your grandchildren reached the point where they're like, oh yeah, my grandpa's-)
    Snoop Dogg, recording artist:
"They know exactly who I am, what I do. We have conversations about business, ideas, but my oldest grandson is mad at me right now because I did an AI situation and I didn't involve him and he's the genius in the family so all technology and anything moving forward with the world, he needs to be first and I have to be second."

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Tiny Harris, recording artist - on daughter Leyah Amore Harris wanting to be a musician:

    SOUNDBITE (English) T.I., recording artist:
"I think the word she's looking for is indoctrinated, you know what I mean? Yeah, she has been drilling it into her from before she hit the air. You hear me? We played music for her still in the belly, and have been singing, and I think even her cry, when she cried it was in key, you what I'm mean, as a baby. She cried in key. See, didn't nobody know that. Didn't nobody tell you that? She cried and key. You know what mean? Nah, but she's a phenomenal talent and a blessing to us all man. We don't watch our own work because, you know, you're only as good as you are at your las job. So we're always looking forward. So I just started watching the Martin show recently. It's been about five years because millennials kept quoting stuff at me and I didn't know what the hell they were talking about. And they were going, it's from the Martin show. It's from "My Wife and Kids." So I started watching it. I was like, oh, that show's funny."

    STORYLINE:
The Pentagon deployed about 700 Marines to Los Angeles on Monday to help National Guard members respond to immigration protests, officials said, as California prepared to sue President Donald Trump over his use of the Guard troops and demonstrators took to the city's streets for a fourth day.
The Marines are being deployed from their base at Twentynine Palms in the Southern California desert to protect federal property and personnel, including federal immigration agents, U.S. Northern Command said in a statement.
The Marines and National Guard troops are not expected to do law enforcement duties, which are prohibited under the Posse Comitatus Act. Trump has not invoked the Insurrection Act to allow them to do law enforcement. It is not clear if he intends to.
Protesters rallied and marched through the streets Monday, holding signs and chanting slogans like “No KKK, no ICE, no fascist USA.” Police and troops remained on scene as chants of “shame” echo through the crowd.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said in a statement Monday afternoon he was confident in the police department's ability to handle large-scale demonstrations and that the Marines’ arrival without coordinating with the police department presented a “significant logistical and operational challenge” for them.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the planned lawsuit over the use of National Guard troops by telling reporters that Trump had “trampled” the state’s sovereignty.
The arrival of the National Guard followed two days of protests that began Friday in downtown Los Angeles after federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people that day across the city.
The smell of smoke hung in the air downtown Monday, one day after crowds blocked a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire as police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades.
The law enforcement presence was heavy, with police cars from neighboring cities blocking the street in front of the federal detention facility that was a focus of the protests.
The clashes unfolded over just a few square blocks in an immense city of some 4 million ... [truncated]

    (10 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRES

(Reporter: "So we lost another icon today, Sly Stone. Any comments or thoughts on that?")

    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mya, recording artist:
"Sly and the Family Stone was often vinyl that was played in my living room growing up. I'm a 70s baby, late 70s, but I'm still 70s. And the impact, first of all, socially, that they would speak about speaks volumes, but continues as timeless music. And, of course, it brings people together, but also creates thought-provoking moments to make you take a second look at the world around you so that you for yourself, of course, can start within, with your family, with your community and hopefully vibrate and influence. But also impact others on a positive level. So, thank you Sly for your contribution to music, to consciousness, musicianship and a long career of dopeness."
    STORYLINE:
Kirk Franklin and Mya were among the musicians mourning Sly Stone at the BET Awards on Monday in Los Angeles.
The revolutionary musician and dynamic frontman for Sly and the Family Stone, who transformed popular music in the 1960s and ’70s and beyond, died Monday at age 82.
"I was very much influenced by Sly Stone's funk, his groove, his sound" Franklin said. "This is a huge loss."
Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, had been in poor health in recent years. His publicist Carleen Donovan said Stone died in Los Angeles surrounded by family after contending with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other ailments.
Founded in 1966-67, Sly and the Family Stone was the first major group to include Black and white men and women, and well embodied a time when anything seemed possible — riots and assassinations, communes and love-ins. The singers screeched, chanted, crooned and hollered. The music was a blowout of frantic horns, rapid-fire guitar and locomotive rhythms, a melting pot of jazz, psychedelic rock, doo-wop, soul and the early grooves of funk.
In 2025, Questlove released the documentary “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius).”
Sly’s influence has endured for decades. The top funk artist of the 1970s, Parliament-Funkadelic creator George Clinton, was a Stone disciple. Prince, Rick James and the Black Eyed Peas were among the many performers from the 1980s and after shaped in part by Sly, and countless hip-hop artists have sampled his riffs, from the Beastie Boys to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. A 2005 tribute record included Maroon 5, John Legend and the Roots.
