  • China MOFA briefing
    (10 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 10 June 2025
    Spokesperson: Lin Jian
    Duration: 5:00
    STORYLINE:
    1. Japan’s Ministry of Defense said today that two Chinese aircraft carriers were spotted operating in the Pacific Ocean for the first time simultaneously. Can the Chinese side provide more information or comment on this?
China’s military vessels’ activities in relevant waters are fully consistent with international law and international practices. China pursues a national defense policy that is defensive in nature. We hope Japan will view those activities objectively and rationally.
    2. Last year, the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish June 10 each year as the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.” This year marks the first such day. We have noted that a series of celebrations were held at UN headquarters and in cities where various UN bodies are located. Could you provide more information on this?
One year ago, the 78th UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution jointly proposed by China and over 80 countries, establishing June 10 each year as the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.” This represents China’s proactive implementation of President Xi Jinping’s Global Civilization Initiative and constitutes an important contribution to promoting equal exchanges and dialogue among civilizations, as well as global peace and development.
Today marks the first International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. China, together with the United Nations, other international organizations and many countries, held a wide range of thematic activities in New York, Geneva, and other UN locations, as well as around the world. The UN's official website livestreamed the events. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a video address titled “Promoting Dialogue among Civilizations, Building a Better World Together,” in which he emphasized that, in the face of profound changes unseen in a century, the international community must collectively defend equality among civilizations, promote exchanges, and advance progress to jointly build a better human civilization.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the President of the 79th UN General Assembly Philemon Yang, and High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Ángel Moratinos delivered speeches praising China’s Global Civilization Initiative as globally significant. They called on the international community to strengthen unity, promote dialogue among civilizations, and safeguard peace and development.
The establishment of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations reflects the universal aspiration of all peoples to advance dialogue and human progress and upholds true multilateralism and shared human values. China will continue to follow the guidance of the Global Civilization Initiative, work with the int... [truncated]

  • Ukrainians seek shelter in subway and damaged homes on second night of heavy Russian drone strikes

    3. 32-year-old Kyiv resident Nina Nosivets holding her 8-month-old son Levko
    4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Nina Nosivets, Kyiv resident:
"We are in the metro station because of the attack, because the Shahed are buzzing overhead and the ballistics are shaking. It's a complete horror. We are in the subway because our neighbor took pity and gave us a lift, and we were just sitting downstairs on the first floor, because our house doesn't have a basement. I just try not to think about all this, silently curl up like a mouse, wait until the attacks end, distract the child somehow, because it is probably the hardest thing for him to bear, who simply does not sleep all night again, but listens to the explosions. Although he is not afraid, I think it still affects him in some way."

"I am sad, but on the other hand, it is good that everyone is safe, both me and my girlfriend. The neighbors too, I checked that they are safe. We went out with them, I checked later. The girl was crying, I am still holding on, maybe it will catch up with me later, but it is okay, we believe in the Armed Forces of Ukraine."

    STORYLINE:
Waves of Russian drone and missile attacks wounded at least four people in Kyiv in the early morning hours on Tuesday, as many sheltered in subway stations across the Ukrainian capital.
Journalists of The Associated Press heard explosions, including the buzzing of drones, in different parts of the city for hours early Tuesday.
The fresh wave of Russian attacks came hours after Moscow launched almost 500 drones at Ukraine in the biggest overnight drone bombardment in the three-year war. Ukrainian and Western officials have been anticipating a Russian response to Ukraine's audacious June 1 drone attack on distant Russian air bases.
Plumes of smoke were visible in Kyiv as air defense forces worked to shoot down drones and missiles on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian residents took shelter and slept in metro stations during the hours-long attack. Nina Nosivets, 32, and her 8-month-old son Levko were among them.
“I just try not to think about all this, silently curled up like a mouse, wait until it all passes, the attacks. Distract the child somehow because its probably the hardest thing for him to bear," she said.

  • Seized aid ship anchored in Israeli port after being blocked from reaching Gaza
    (10 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Ashdod, Israel - 10 June 2025
    1. Various of boat docked at port
    STORYLINE:
A Gaza-bound aid boat which was seized by the Israeli military was seen docked at Ashdod Port on Tuesday morning.
Israeli forces had detained the 12 activists on board the Madleen ship and brought the vessel to Ashdod a day earlier, enforcing a longstanding blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the Israel-Hamas war.
The dozen were expected to be held at a detention facility before being deported, according to a legal rights group representing them.
The activists had set out to protest Israel's military campaign in Gaza, which is among the deadliest and most destructive since World War II, and its restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid.
Both have put the territory of around 2 million Palestinians at risk of famine.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the voyage, said the ship was seized in international waters about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Gaza.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the activists would be returned to their home countries.
