  • Nicole Scherzinger, Natalie Venetia Belcon, and Sarah Snook speak at the 2025 Tony Awards
    (8 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York - 8 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Scherzinger, actor:- on relating to her 'Sunset Blvd.' character.
    "Norma battles with a lot of things. She battles with where does the time go, you know, it's time fleeting as we all do, especially me. You blink, a day goes by, two decades go by, you wake up and you're 46 years old just when you've been 25 touring with the biggest one of the biggest pop groups. She battles with abandonment, loneliness, fear of not being seen, fear not being loved. So what I wanted to hopefully achieve was the human story that everyone could relate to and to let them know that they are not alone. And at the end, she is a dreamer and she is warrior."

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalie Venetia Belcon, actor:- on how 'Buena Vista Social Club' reflects the current social climate
    "I mean from pain comes beauty, right? And from pain typically is when people write the best things and perform the best sadly maybe not so sadly but yeah it helps."

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalie Venetia Belcon, actor:- on performing 8 shows-a-week.

    STORYLINE:
    The stars of Broadway walked the red carpet in New York Sunday for the 78th annual Tony Awards. Actors and creators from some of the biggest plays and musicals this season were nominated for American theater’s highest accolade.
    Nicole Scherzinger, who leads Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Blvd" as Norma Desmond, spoke on how she personally relates to her character.
    "You blink, a day goes by, two decades go by, you wake up and you're 46 years old just when you've been 25 touring with the biggest one of the biggest pop groups," Scherzinger said. "She battles with abandonment, loneliness, fear of not being seen, fear not being loved. So what I wanted to hopefully achieve was the human story."
    Natalie Venetia Belcon, who stars in Buena Vista Social Club, reflected on how today’s social climate informed the Broadway production, which premiered on Broadway earlier this year.
    "Pain comes beauty right and from pain typically is when people write the best things and perform the best sadly maybe not so sadly but yeah it helps."
    Featured performances included the casts of nominated new musicals and revivals including "Buena Vista Social Club," "Dead Outlaw," "Death Becomes Her," "Floyd Collins," "Gypsy," "Maybe Happy Ending," "Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical," "Pirates! • Mia Farrow, Jamie Lloyd, Christopher Jackson, Andrew Durand, speak at the Tony Awards
    (8 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York - 8 June 2025
    1. Mia Farrow speaks with reporter
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mia Farrow, actor:- on wanting to be in 'The Roommate' with an eight show a week schedule:
    "It was the confluence of a play that seemed worth doing, brought to me by a friend, a director, who was worth working with, a play written by a playwright, Jan Silverman, who in my view is a wonderful playwright. And then when Patti LuPone agreed to do it, I mean, everything fell into place, and Ronan said, 'You have to do it.' So it was... A little nudge from my son, and some little Jiminy Cricket saying, you should do this. Because I'm actually very good at doing nothing, you know. I mean, I have a dog, I've got grandchildren, I live in the country, I'm a garden, I read a lot, I listen to music, and I'm not an unhappy person. So I don't need to be changing that, but I'm very glad I did."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mia Farrow, actor:
    "I can say two things. One, my time with Patti was wonderful. She's the most wonderful roommate, stage companion you could ever ask for. And it was a two-hander, our plays. There was only two of us. It was weak. So if there were any negatives, I would know. She was wonderful! The other thing I want to say is this is the most beautiful community I've ever been privileged to be among. And the fact that people of this magnitude of talent. Have been so welcoming to me has meant more than I can say. So I'm so honored tonight to be at this Tony nomination and be among the people that I'm awed by. I have no words to say. It's great upon great."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Jamie Lloyd, director:- on Nicole Scherzinger in 'Sunset Blvd.'
    "Nicole, who, I mean, I think she's giving us a performance for the ages. I think it's an exceptional performance and really, it's really an understanding that she has such a connection to Norma Desmond's journey. So like Norma Desmond. Nicole knows what it's like to be exceptionally famous, really, really like loved all over the world and then to sort of be dismissed, discarded, almost became a sort of like laughing stock, Like, no one took her seriously. No one realized what she could really do, and now finally she gets to show the world this exceptional talent. Not only is she a powerhouse vocalist, but an amazing, amazing actor. So I just know what that's like. Like Norma, she's like desperate for the world to see what she can really do. And Nicole is doing it, and then some."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Jackson, actor:
    "I don't think that there's a single person in our community that doesn't have a mind and a heart for the things that are happening in the world. As artists, our job is to create something to evoke people's thoughts, emotions that extend beyond just the show that we're doing. And so what we're always doing is we've always seen it as an extension of trying to just make the world a little bit better with the rig... [truncated]

They just don't want to be challenged if you agree with the power or disagree with the power. Nobody likes it. They don't like to be challenged. And sometimes they get aggressive and sometimes they try to stop you. Where it becomes a problem is when the people in your industry censor themselves. When they start going, 'Well, maybe we don't ask that question because maybe we'll get sued or maybe somebody has to get paid out.' That's when they win. That's what McCarthy did. He didn't really have much power. He wasn't really... What he did do was scare the hell out of everybody. And then everybody said, 'OK, we'll kick these people out on a blank piece of paper with no names on it.' And we're seeing some of that happen again. So, but that's happened a lot in our history. And so it's, there's some elements of that now for sure."

    "No, that's why they're here. Trump hates us. He hates sanctuary cities. He's going to try and make an example out of us. No, I'm not surprised. I'm just wanting the people to understand that we have a right to protest, we have the right to be out to access. Why are they here with guns? And all the communities have gotta understand, this is not just about deportation. This is about how they're going to treat people of color in America and this is how he's going to get to have martial law, because he wants to go to us into a fight. They have all the guns. We know they have all the guns. We gotta let people know that we have a right to speak up. We are supposedly in a democracy and have a voice, but we've gotta heighten that force. We've got to improve that force, we've got to get more people involved, and perhaps we can push back, but until if people are frightened and they won't come out and they won't participate because they're allowing him to intimidate, then it's going to be harder to do. But some of us are going to out here."

A lot of them are coming to their hearings and doing what "they were supposed to be doing" and still being detained. But also for the men, women and children that have been ripped out of their homes in a very violent fashion. They're being detained in very overcrowded facilities that were not intended for this. And so we're saying they need to let them go and to stop terrorizing our community."

    "This is a modernized version of a traditional Korean outfit called hanbok, and I thought it would just be a nice little statement about America today, because now that the definition of American is under attack, I thought it would be nice to say that no matter what we look like or how we dress, we can all still be loyal and proud Americans. It's what we can do as artists. We can tell stories. And communicate messages in a way that goes beyond just a classroom or a documentary. If we can be entertained as well as educated, then it's nourishing for the soul and the heart. So I'm glad that we were able to do that with 'Yellow Face' and that Roundabout gave us that opportunity. This entire event is so important to remind us of the power that we have as storytellers. We can speak truth to power. We can do the things that... That many of us in a world that we're being divided, we can unite and we can create understanding and that gives us a unique responsibility in our culture."
