  • Nicole Scherzinger on playing Norma Desmond in 'Sunset Blvd.'

    New York - 8 June 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Scherzinger, actor:- on relating to her 'Sunset Blvd.' character.
"Norma battles with a lot of things. She battles with where does the time go, you know, it's time fleeting as we all do, especially me. You blink, a day goes by, two decades go by, you wake up and you're 46 years old just when you've been 25 touring with the biggest one of the biggest pop groups. She battles with abandonment, loneliness, fear of not being seen, fear not being loved. So what I wanted to hopefully achieve was the human story that everyone could relate to and to let them know that they are not alone. And at the end, she is a dreamer and she is warrior."

    STORYLINE:
Cars burned on the streets of Los Angeles on Monday as thousands of protesters marched in response to President Donald Trump’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard.
A major freeway was blocked and autonomous vehicles set alight as local law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs to control the crowd.
Some police patrolled the streets on horseback while others with riot gear lined up behind Guard troops deployed to protect federal facilities including a detention center where some immigrants were taken in recent days.
The clashes came on the third day of demonstrations against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 federal troops spurred anger and fear among some residents.
By midday, hundreds had gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, where people were detained after earlier immigration raids.
Protesters directed chants of “go home” at members of the National Guard, who stood shoulder to shoulder, carrying long guns and riot shields.
After some protesters closely approached the guard members, another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting smoke-filled canisters into the street.

  • What George Clooney will tell his kids about speaking truth to power
    (9 Jun 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York - 8 June 2025
    1. George and Amal Clooney arrive at the Tony Awards
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) George Clooney, actor:
"Well, interesting as you are the AP, you'll understand this, this is not something new, right? Whenever - power doesn't like what you do for a living. They just don't want to be challenged if you agree with the power or disagree with the power. Nobody likes it. They don't like to be challenged. And sometimes they get aggressive and sometimes they try to stop you. Where it becomes a problem is when the people in your industry censor themselves. When they start going, 'Well, maybe we don't ask that question because maybe we'll get sued or maybe somebody has to get paid out.' That's when they win. That's what McCarthy did. He didn't really have much power. He wasn't really... What he did do was scare the hell out of everybody. And then everybody said, 'OK, we'll kick these people out on a blank piece of paper with no names on it.' And we're seeing some of that happen again. So, but that's happened a lot in our history. And so it's, there's some elements of that now for sure."
    3. George and Amal Clooney pose at the Tony Awards red carpet
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) George Clooney, actor:
"You know, the fun part is that there's going to be a time in our history when people are going to say, 'Is it really true that they were talking about getting rid of the rid of a habeas corpus?' And I'm going to say, 'Yeah,' and they're going to say, 'And then what were you doing during that period of time?' Like, 'Well, we did this, we talked about it, we argued about it.' So I don't mind that."

The high seas treaty is critical to ensuring that we can protect biodiversity in the ocean that covers half of the planet. There is no law that gives us that ability. The UN Ocean Conference has really been worked towards as a critical milestone on that pathway to getting the treaty entered into force so we're really hoping to get as countries to ratify in the next few days to ensure the treaty can enter into force.”
