  • Law enforcement in Los Angeles uses tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bangs to control protests

    2. Protesters running from clouds of smoke
    3. Canisters on ground

    STORYLINE:
Tensions in Los Angeles escalated Sunday as thousands of protesters took to the streets in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard, blocking off a major freeway and setting self-driving cars on fire as law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bangs to control the crowd.
Many protesters dispersed as evening fell and police declared an unlawful assembly, a precursor to officers moving in and making arrests of people who don’t leave.
Some of those remaining threw objects at police from behind a makeshift barrier that spanned the width of a street and others hurled chunks of concrete, rocks, electric scooters and fireworks at California Highway Patrol officers and their vehicles parked on the closed southbound 101 Freeway. Officers ran under an overpass to take cover.
Sunday’s protests in Los Angeles, a sprawling city of 4 million people, were centered in several blocks of downtown. It was the third and most intense day of demonstrations against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 Guard troops spurred anger and fear among many residents.
The Guard was deployed specifically to protect federal buildings, including the downtown detention center where protesters concentrated.
Several dozen people were arrested throughout the weekend of protest. One was detained Sunday for throwing a Molotov cocktail at police, and another for ramming a motorcycle into a line of officers.

    STORYLINE:
A contractor digging into the earth where the rubble of a destroyed house had been cleared away in northern Syria stumbled across a surprise: the remains of an underground Byzantine tomb complex believed to be more than 1,500 years old.
The discovery emerged last month in the town of Maarat al-Numan in the Idlib province, which is strategically located on the route between the cities of Aleppo and Damascus.
The community became a touchpoint in the nearly 14-year Syrian civil war that ended with the fall of former President Bashar Assad in a lightning rebel offensive in December.
Assad’s forces seized the area back from opposition control in 2020. Houses were looted and demolished. Aerial images of the area show many houses still standing but without roofs.
Now residents are beginning to return and rebuild.
In the course of a reconstruction project, stone openings were uncovered indicating the presence of ancient graves.
Residents notified the directorate of antiquities, which dispatched a specialized team to inspect and secure the site.

    STORYLINE:
Protesters in San Francisco joined the expansion of anti-ICE rallies on Monday in response to US President Trump’s immigration crackdown in California.
It comes as National Guard troops faced off with protesters in Los Angeles on Sunday as tear gas was fired at a growing crowd outside a federal complex hours after the federal troops arrived in the city on Trump’s orders.
The confrontation broke out in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles as a group of demonstrators shouted insults at members of the guard lined shoulder to shoulder behind plastic riot shields.
Around 300 National Guard troops had arrived early Sunday following two days of clashes with immigration authorities.
A major freeway was blocked and autonomous vehicles set alight as local law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs to control the crowd.
Some police patrolled the streets on horseback while others with riot gear lined up behind Guard troops deployed to protect federal facilities including a detention center where some immigrants were taken in recent days.
The clashes came on the third day of demonstrations against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 federal troops spurred anger and fear among some residents.
By midday, hundreds had gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, where people were detained after earlier immigration raids.
Protesters directed chants of “go home” at members of the National Guard, who stood shoulder to shoulder, carrying long guns and riot shields.

    STORYLINE:
A New Orleans police officer who fatally shot a puppy while responding to a call is set to face a jury trial Monday in federal court after being sued by the dog's owners.
Multiple internal investigations by the New Orleans Police Department found the 2021 lethal shooting of the 18 week old, 22 pound (10 kilogram) rescue dog Apollo to be in violation of its policies and "unjustified."
The department's internal investigators said the dog, which ran up to Officer Derrick Burmaster after he entered the yard to respond to a report of domestic disturbance, did not pose a threat.
After Apollo's owners sued Burmaster and the City of New Orleans in 2022, the department's leadership exonerated the officer of wrongdoing for his use of force following a disciplinary hearing in July 2023.
The city’s Independent Police Monitor, Stella Cziment, whose office has closely followed the case says, "Choices were made and in our assessment those choices deviated from how officer Burmaster was trained to handle these moments and how policy expects him to handle these moments."

    STORYLINE:
Tensions in Los Angeles escalated Sunday as thousands of protesters took to the streets in response to President Donald Trump’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard, blocking off a major freeway and setting self-driving cars on fire as law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs to control the crowd.
Some police patrolled the streets on horseback while others with riot gear lined up behind Guard troops deployed to protect federal facilities including a detention center where some immigrants were taken in recent days.
Police declared an unlawful assembly, and by early evening many people had left.
But protesters who remained grabbed chairs from a nearby public park to form a makeshift barrier, throwing objects at police on the other side.
Others standing above the closed southbound 101 Freeway threw chunks of concrete, rocks, electric scooters and fireworks at California Highway Patrol officers and their vehicles that were parked on the highway.
Officers ran under an overpass to take cover.
It was the third day of demonstrations against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 federal troops spurred anger and fear among some residents.
Sunday's protests in Los Angeles, a city of 4 million people, were centered in several blocks of downtown.
