  • Misty Copeland, who broke barriers in ballet, is retiring from ABT

"You know, I've become the person that I am today and I have all of the opportunities I have today because of ballet, because of American Ballet Theater. And I feel like this is, you know, me saying thank you to the company. So it's a farewell. I won't, it won't be the end of me dancing. It's just, you know, it's been 25 years at ABT, and I think it's time. It's time for me to move to the next stage."

And so I feel like that's one of the biggest shifts that I've seen, but also for a lot of young people that just can imagine being a part of it in some way. They can imagine stepping into Lincoln Center and imagine you know being at the Metropolitan Opera House whereas I think before that was you know with the Black and brown community specifically that was not a place they felt that they were welcomed."

  • Macron holds meetings with a handful of leaders after opening session of UN Ocean Conference in Nice
    (9 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:

    Nice, France - 9 June 2025

    2. Macron and Jordan's King Abdullah II
    3. Macron and Comoros President Azali Assoumani
    4. Macron and Argentine President Javier Milei
    5. Macron and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
    STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron held bilateral meetings with a handful of world leaders on Monday, following the opening session of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice.
Amid mounting pressure for nations to turn decades of promises into real protection for the sea, Macron, delivering the keynote address, urged countries to move “from words to deeds” in safeguarding the oceans.
The French President warned that “the fight for the ocean is at the heart of the years-long battles we’ve been waging — for biodiversity, for climate, for our environment and for our health.”
The conference comes as just 2.7% of the ocean is effectively protected from destructive extractive activities, according to the nonprofit Marine Conservation Institute.
That's far below the target agreed under the “30x30” pledge to conserve 30% of land and sea by 2030.

We count on you. You are the only one who have the power to take the decision to protect the deep sea. You're the only one."

Since 1950 we lost 40 percent diminishment of phytoplankton in the sea. Phytoplankton provides 70% of the oxygen we breath. If Phytoplankton disappears from the sea, we die. It’s a simple as that. So, we have to do everything to protect the phytoplankton in the sea. And that means protecting biodiversity and making sure the ocean is clean to support life”.

So, we urgently need the other countries to take responsibility and agree to protect the deep sea once and for all. The only solution is a moratorium on deep-sea mining”.

"Mango production is mostly affected by climate change. Various diseases in mango trees are another major issue. Mango malformation is one of the most serious diseases, causing a reduction in production. Water scarcity is also a contributing factor, as sufficient water could not be supplied to the orchards when it was needed for the mango trees. Due to the lack of adequate water, the plant, flower and fruit could not grow in a suitable environment. All these factors contribute to the low production of mangoes."

  • Smoke seen billowing over Gaza skyline as Israeli offensive continues

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Southern Israel (looking into Gaza) - 9 June 2025
    ++MUTE++
    1. Continuous shot of light-colored flash, smoke rising into sky, buildings
    STORYLINE:
A light-colored flash and a plume of smoke was seen rising into the sky in Gaza Monday as Israel continued its offensive in the enclave.
That happened after Palestinians said Israeli forces and allied local gunmen fired toward a crowd heading to an Israeli- and U.S.-supported food distribution center in the territory early Monday.
Gaza's Health Ministry said six people were killed.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Israel recently acknowledged supporting local armed groups opposed to Hamas.
It was the latest in a number of shootings that have killed at least 127 people and wounded hundreds since the rollout of a new food distribution system, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
Israel’s war in Gaza has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its tally.
The war began with Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which left around 1,200 dead.

    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director-General:
“We’ve seen some reports on the press. We haven’t had any official communication about this. In any case, this seems to refer to Soreq which is a research facility – which we inspect by the way. Normally, people tell me you don’t inspect Israeli - yeah we do. We don’t inspect other strategic parts of the programme but this part of the programme we do inspect. It’s a research reactor and a research facility.”
    7. Wide of Grossi leaving conference
    STORYLINE:
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Monday that the information Iran claimed it seized regarding Israel’s nuclear programme “seems to refer” to the Soreq Nuclear Research Center, a national laboratory for nuclear science established in Israel in 1958, engaged in nuclear science, radiation safety, and applied physics.
“We have seen some reports in the press. We haven’t had any official communication about this. In any case, this seems to refer to Soreq, which is a research facility which we inspect by the way,” IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi told reporters on the first day of a regular meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna.
“We don’t inspect other strategic parts of the programme but this part of the programme we do inspect,” he added.
The office of Israel’s prime minister did not immediately respond to a request for comment over Grossi’s remarks.
The IAEA has so-called “item-specific safeguards agreements” with Israel, Pakistan and India, all countries that are not party to the Treat on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
According to the UN nuclear watchdog, parties to this type of agreement undertake “not to use nuclear material, facilities or other items subject to the agreement for the manufacture of any nuclear weapon or to further any military purpose.”
Iran’s intelligence minister claimed without offering evidence Sunday that Tehran seized an “important treasury” of information regarding Israel’s nuclear programme, ahead of a week in which the Islamic Republic likely... [truncated]
