So the dress has a balloon hem, which is interesting also because now that's becoming very fashionable again, you see balloon hems on dresses and this is 1954. And that balloon hem which you'll see was, we did an X-ray of it, our conservation science team, when we were doing investigations on the dress, and it was that x-ray and the internal structure of this dress which was one of the inspirations for V&A's museum's architecture."

    STORYLINE:
The streets of the sprawling city of 4 million people were mostly quiet Monday morning, the day after crowds blocked off a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire as law enforcement responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades.
Sunday’s protests were centered in several blocks of downtown and a handful of other places. It was the third and most intense day of demonstrations against Trump’s immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 National Guard troops spurred anger and fear among many residents.
National Guard troops stood shoulder to shoulder carrying long guns and riot shields as protesters shouted “shame” and “go home." After some demonstrators closely approached the Guard members, another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting smoke-filled canisters into the street.
Minutes later, the Los Angeles Police Department fired rounds of crowd-control munitions to disperse the protesters, who they said were assembled unlawfully. Much of the group then moved to block traffic on the 101 freeway until state patrol officers cleared them.
Some protesters were seen hurling chunks of concrete, rocks, electric scooters and fireworks at California Highway Patrol officers and their vehicles parked on the closed southbound 101 Freeway. Officers ran under an overpass to take cover at one point.
Nearby, at least four self-driving Waymo cars were set on fire, sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky and exploding intermittently. By evening, police had shut down several blocks of downtown Los Angeles.
Flash-bang grenades echoed out every few seconds into the evening.

  • Italy's referendum on citizenship and job protections fails on low turnout

    8. Close of sign outside the school bearing Rome city emblem and reading (Italian) “Polling stations”
    9. Wide of entrance of school turned into polling station with Italian and European Union flags
    STORYLINE:
Italy's referendums aimed at relaxing citizenship laws and improving job protections failed on Monday due to low turnout, partial data showed, marking a clear defeat for the centre-left opposition and boosting the ruling right-wing coalition.
Italians headed to the polls Monday on the second and final day of referendums that wanted to make it easier for children born in Italy to foreigners to obtain citizenship, and on providing more job protections.
But the vote needed to reach a 50% plus one threshold to be validated.
Official data from almost 90% of the polling stations showed that turnout hovered around 30% of eligible voters after two days of voting, well below the 50% plus one of the electorate required to make the vote valid.
The result deals a sound blow to the referendums' organizers — including Italy's center-left opposition parties, activists groups and the main labor union — while it scores a victory for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who openly supported abstention.
Meloni and other high-profile politicians in her conservative coalition have encouraged their supporters to boycott the referendum.
The premier's far-right Brothers of Italy party celebrated the referendum's failure on Monday afternoon, stressing the opposition's setback.
Campaigners for the change in the citizenship law say it will help second-generation Italians born in the country to non-European Union parents better integrate into a culture they already see as theirs.
The new rules, if passed, would have affected about 2.5 million foreign nationals who still struggle to be recognized as citizens.
Supporters said this reform would have brought Italy’s citizenship law in line with many other European countries, promoting greater social integration for long-term residents.
It would have also allowed faster access to civil and political rights, such as the right to vote, eligibility for public employment and freedom of movement within the EU.

  • Venezuelans react to Trump's new travel ban as it takes effect

"I imagine that from today, many things that one is not aware of will become clearer. Others say the situation is going to get worse. But what else? What more can we expect? From being worse than what we are already experiencing. Since President Trump, I see everything as worse."
    9. Various of people walking on the street
    STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump’s new ban on travel to the U.S. targeting dozens of countries, including Venezuela, took effect Monday amid rising tension over the president’s escalating campaign of immigration enforcement.
The new ban does not revoke visas previously issued to people from countries on the list, according to guidance issued Friday to all U.S. diplomatic missions.
Travelers with previously issued visas should still be able to enter the U.S. even after the ban takes effect.
In Venezuela, some expressed relief that visa holders will be able to enter the U.S. after the confusion generated last week when Trump signed the proclamation that many interpreted would have prevented visa holders to be able to enter.
"It's a relief that the White House issued that clarification because we Venezuelans are battered enough with the migratory policies in the United States," said Marleny Fernandez, a Venezuelan lawyer who holds a U.S. visa.
Many immigration experts say the new ban is more carefully crafted and appears designed to beat court challenges that hampered the first by focusing on the visa application process.
Trump said this time that some countries had “deficient” screening for passports and other public documents or have historically refused to take back their own citizens.
He relied extensively on an annual Homeland Security report of people who remain in the U.S. after their visas expired.

  • Czech court sentences Colombian to 8 years for arson attack which officials think is tied to Russia

    9. Close of defendant's face
    STORYLINE:
A court in the Czech capital sentenced a Colombian national to eight years in prison on Monday for an arson attack and planning another one, in a case which authorities believe may be linked to Russia.
Prague's Municipal Court also ordered Andrés Alfonso de la Hoz de la Cruz to pay damages worth 115,000 koruna ($5,300).
The court approved a plea agreement between prosecutors and the defendant, who pleaded guilty.
The 26-year-old Colombian was arrested a year ago after setting ablaze three Prague public buses at a depot at night. The court said that he recorded what he did and left.
Local workers managed to extinguish the fire.
The court said the man received orders on the Telegram messaging app and was promised $3,000. He was also planning one more attack, possibly at a movie theater in Prague.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala previously said the failed arson attack was likely part of Russia’s hybrid war against his country.
Czechia, which is more widely known in English as the Czech Republic, is a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s full scale-invasion.
Western officials have accused Russia and its proxies of staging dozens of attacks and other incidents across Europe since Moscow launched all-out war on Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, according to data collected by The Associated Press.
They allege the disruption campaign is an extension of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war, intended to sow division in European societies and undermine support for Ukraine.
