So what we are saying that it's better to shout and die when shouting than to keep quiet and be gotten from our homes when we are quiet."
    12. Various of protesters and police standing off
    STORYLINE:
Kenyan police teargassed activists twice while they marched to the Central Police Station in Nairobi on Monday, protesting the death of Kenyan blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead after being in custody at the location on Sunday.
Kenya Police said in a statement that he was arrested for “false publication” and died from “hitting his head against the cell wall.”
Ojwang was arrested on Friday in Homa Bay, western Kenya and driven 400km to the capital, Nairobi, said fellow activists during a news conference outside the Nairobi Funeral Home, where they came to pay their respects to the family. The group says that his post about the deputy police chief Eliud Lagat on X was the reason for his arrest.
"What the members of the (Ojwang) family are saying is that, they have seen the body, the lawyer has also said they have seen the body, and there is more than one injuries on his face on his hands and on the body so how could he have hurt himself like that?" said activist Ndungi Githuku.
Kenya Police said that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had launched an investigation into the incident. Officers who were on duty when Ojwang died in custody will also not be returning to work while they await outcome of investigations, said police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja.
Amnesty Kenya also said in a statement that Ojwang’s arrest raises serious questions and that the results of the IPOA report must be made public and any officers found respon... [truncated]

    6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Sandra Martinez, housekeeper:
"I imagine that from today, many things that one is not aware of will become clearer. Others say the situation is going to get worse. But what else? What more can we expect? From being worse than what we are already experiencing. Since President Trump, I see everything as worse."
    7. Various of people walking on the street
    STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump’s new ban on travel to the U.S. targeting dozens of countries, including Venezuela, took effect Monday amid rising tension over the president’s escalating campaign of immigration enforcement.
The new ban does not revoke visas previously issued to people from countries on the list, according to guidance issued Friday to all U.S. diplomatic missions.
Travelers with previously issued visas should still be able to enter the U.S. even after the ban takes effect.
In Venezuela, some expressed relief that visa holders will be able to enter the U.S. after the confusion generated last week when Trump signed the proclamation that many interpreted would have prevented visa holders to be able to enter.
"It's a relief that the White House issued that clarification because we Venezuelans are battered enough with the migratory policies in the United States," said Marleny Fernandez, a Venezuelan lawyer who holds a U.S. visa.
Many immigration experts say the new ban is more carefully crafted and appears designed to beat court challenges that hampered the first by focusing on the visa application process.
Trump said this time that some countries had “deficient” screening for passports and other public documents or have historically refused to take back their own citizens.
He relied extensively on an annual Homeland Security report of people who remain in the U.S. after their visas expired.

  • Officials from the U.S. and China meet for trade talks in London
    (9 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    London - 9 June 2025
    1. Various exteriors of U.K. government building that held China-U.S. trade talks
    STORYLINE:
High-level delegations from the United States and China met in London on Monday to try and shore up a fragile truce in a trade dispute that has roiled the global economy.
A Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng held talks with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at a U.K. government building.
The talks, which are expected to last at least a day, follow negotiations in Geneva last month that brought a temporary respite in the trade war.
The two countries announced May 12 they had agreed to a 90-day suspension of most of the 100%-plus tariffs they had imposed on each other in an escalating trade war that had sparked fears of recession.
The U.S. and China are the world's biggest and second-biggest economies. Chinese trade data shows that exports to the United States fell 35% in May from a year earlier.

"We came here only to face suffering, death, killing, there were tanks, shootings, all of this just so we can get our livelihood. We ask the Arab countries to find a solution for us. Enough! This wrong, what is happening is wrong. Seriously, what is happening is wrong. Find a solution for us."
    5. Various of hundreds of people walking back after aid distribution point was closed
    STORYLINE:
Palestinians say Israeli forces and allied local gunmen fired toward a crowd heading to an Israeli- and U.S.-supported food distribution center in the Gaza Strip early Monday.
Gaza's Health Ministry said six people were killed.
The gunmen appeared to be allied with the Israeli military, operating in close proximity to troops and retreating into an Israeli military zone in the southern city of Rafah after the crowd hurled stones at them, witnesses said.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Israel recently acknowledged supporting local armed groups opposed to Hamas.
It was the latest in a number of shootings that have killed at least 127 people and wounded hundreds since the rollout of a new food distribution system, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
Israel and the United States say the new system is designed to circumvent Hamas, but it has been rejected by the U.N. and major aid groups.
Experts have meanwhile warned that Israel's blockade and its ongoing military campaign have put Gaza at risk of famine.
Palestinians say Israeli forces have repeatedly fired toward crowds heading to the food centers since they opened last month.
In previous instances, the Israeli military has said it fired warning shots at people who approached its forces near the centers, which are in military zones off limits to independent media.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the Israeli and U.S.-supported private contractor running the sites, says there has been no violence in or around the centers themselves.
But GHF repeatedly warns would-be food recipients that stepping off the road designated by the military for people to reach the centers represents “a great danger.”
It paused delivery at its three distribut... [truncated]
