    STORYLINE:
Guatemalan officials on Friday declared the end of the eruption of the country's Volcano of Fire which forced hundred to evacuate and prompted the closure of dozens of schools.
Guatemala's National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) announced volcanic activity had decreased during the early hours of Friday and declared the end of the eruptive phase.
Guatemala's Disaster Agency (CONRED) said local authorities would be providing transportation for the nearly 600 people forced to evacuate to return to their homes and said shelters would remain open for families who would prefer to wait another night.
The Volcano of Fire entered a new eruptive phase on Thursday, spewing pyroclastic flows, a mixture of gases, ash, and blocks of hot rock, which spread fear among communities living on the slopes of the volcano.
This was the volcano's second eruption of the year, following a period of intense activity in February.
"One minute you're there, and the next minute tragedy strikes," said 67-year-old Isabel Pérez who was evacuated from El Porvenir.
The 12,300-foot (3,763-meter) high volcano is one of the most active in Central America. It is 33 miles (53 km) from Guatemala’s capital.
A 2018 eruption killed 194 people and left another 234 missing.

  • Judge denies Harvey Weinstein’s bid for mistrial after juror complains
    (6 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York - 6 June 2025
    1. Harvey Weinstein's attorney, Arthur Aidala, exiting the courthouse
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Arthur Aidala, Attorney for Harvey Weinstein:
"We are very concerned about the juror who came in twice today to make complaints that this is a fair and unjust - unfair, I'm sorry, unfair and unjust. So a... a juror who's been here on time, always been paying attention. He came in in the morning, and then he came in right before lunch, and complaining about juror misconduct and saying that this process is unfair and unjust. Those are very important words in this courthouse behind us. Unfair and unjust."
    3. Aidala talking to the press outside the courthouse
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Arthur Aidala, Attorney for Harvey Weinstein:
"We're going to explore the legal issues around that this weekend. And probably make a submission to the court regarding that over the weekend. We've asked for a mistrial about it twice, once this morning and once this afternoon. Those issues have been turned down, but are now preserved if - if there has to be an appeal."
    5. Aidala leaving
    STORYLINE:
A juror in Harvey Weinstein’s sex crimes trial asked to be removed from the case Friday because he felt his fellow jurors were treating a member of their panel in an “unfair and unjust” way, but the judge told him he had to keep deliberating.
Judge Curtis Farber later denied a defense request for a mistrial, saying he believed the juror was simply expressing discomfort in the deliberation process, noting that he’s the youngest on the 12-person panel.
The second day of deliberations ended Friday without a verdict. Jurors are expected back in court Monday.
Jurors reheard testimony from Weinstein’s three accusers. They also reviewed other evidence, including medical records and emails.
Twice on Friday, though, a juror requested to address the court without the other jurors present.
The juror said he wanted to be excused from the trial because he was uncomfortable with how some jurors were acting toward another juror.
But Farber denied the request, saying there were no more alternate jurors to replace him and, in any case, his concerns did not warrant being dismissed.
The juror insisted, calling the treatment “unfair and unjust” even as he described the tension as “playground stuff” with jurors shunning another juror and talking behind their back.
Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala argued that the jury should be told to stop deliberating while the court found out more about the concerns.
Sexual misconduct allegations against Weinstein propelled the #MeToo movement in 2017.
The jury of seven women and five men is considering two counts of criminal sex act and one count of rape against the 73-year-old Oscar-winning movie producer, with the criminal sex act charges the higher-degree felonies. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty.
Weinstein was convicted of sex crimes in New York and California, but the ... [truncated]

“Mr. Secretary of Defense of the United States of America, dear Pete. We don’t forget what we owe them (the American soldiers who died during DDay), what we owe you, dear American allies, dear veterans. We don’t forget that our oldest allies were there in this grave moment of our history. I say it with deep respect in front of you, veterans, who incarnate this unique friendship between our two countries.”

    STORYLINE:
Veterans gathered Friday in Normandy to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings — a pivotal moment of World War II that eventually led to the collapse of Adolf Hitler's regime.
Along the coastline and near the D-Day landing beaches, tens of thousands of onlookers attended the commemorations, which included parachute jumps, flyovers, remembrance ceremonies, parades, and historical reenactments.
Many were there to cheer the ever-dwindling number of surviving veterans in their late 90s and older. All remembered the thousands who died.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commemorated the anniversary of the D-Day landings, in which American soldiers played a leading role, with veterans at the American Cemetery overlooking the shore in the village of Colleville-sur-Mer.
French Minister for the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu told Hegseth that France knows what it owes to its American allies and the veterans who helped free Europe from the Nazis.
"We don’t forget that our oldest allies were there in this grave moment of our history. I say it with deep respect in front of you, veterans, who incarnate this unique friendship between our two countries,” he said.
Hegseth said France and the United States should be prepared to fight if danger arises again, and that “good men are still needed to stand up.”
“Today the United States and France again rally together to confront such threats," he said, without mentioning a specific enemy.
“Because we strive for peace, we must prepare for war and hopefully deter it.”
