“In view of the whole issue, a WhatsApp group was created with all the classmates who are in Venezuela because it's summer and they all came to see their families. So, the group was created and we agreed on changing the flights as soon as possible before the 9th to avoid anything. Because some say they could enter after the ban but others said they couldn't. So the interpretations of the proclamation were varied, so we decided to change the flight for today."
    7. Irene and Ivana saying goodbye
    8. Ivanna entering security check up
    STORYLINE:
Venezuelan community college student Ivanna De Gregorio was enjoying the summer in her home country when the travel ban was announced, prompting her to switch her return to the U.S. from Aug. 11 to Friday.
She did not want to risk jeopardizing the student visa that allows her to study at a Mississippi school on a tennis scholarship.
“It came as a surprise because I was going to spend my entire break here,” she said standing in line at the airport outside Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, with her mom, who does not have a tourist visa and teared up at the thought of not knowing when she will see her only child again.
Ivana, who has played tennis for 14 years, said it was a lifelong project.
No commercial airline offers direct flights between the South American country and the U.S. So, De Gregorio’s itinerary includes three flights: first to Bogota, then to Atlanta, and lastly to New Jersey, where she will live with an uncle until her school reopens in August.
“In view of the whole issue, a WhatsApp group was created with all the classmates who are in Venezuela… and we agreed on changing the flights as soon as possible,” Ivana's mother, Irene De Gregorio said.
“The interpretations of (the ban) were varied. So, well, we decided to change the ticket for today.”
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday resurrected a hallmark policy of his first term, announcing that citizens of 12 countries would be banned from visiting the United States and those from seven others would face restrictions.
The new ban includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
There will be heightened restrictions on visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmeni... [truncated]

  • Wreaths laid as veterans gather in Normandy to mark 81st anniversary of D-Day landings

    STORYLINE:
Veterans gathered Friday in Normandy to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings — a pivotal moment of World War II that eventually led to the collapse of Adolf Hitler's regime.
Along the coastline and near the D-Day landing beaches, tens of thousands of onlookers attended the commemorations, which included parachute jumps, flyovers, remembrance ceremonies, parades, and historical reenactments.
Many were there to cheer the ever-dwindling number of surviving veterans in their late 90s and older. All remembered the thousands who died.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commemorated the anniversary of the D-Day landings, in which American soldiers played a leading role, with veterans at the American Cemetery overlooking the shore in the village of Colleville-sur-Mer, along with U.K. counterpart John Healey among others.
French Minister for the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu told Hegseth that France knows what it owes to its American allies and the veterans who helped free Europe from the Nazis.
The June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France used the largest-ever armada of ships, troops, planes and vehicles to breach Hitler’s defenses in western Europe. A total of 4,414 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself.
In the ensuing Battle of Normandy, 73,000 Allied forces were killed and 153,000 wounded. The battle — and especially Allied bombings of French villages and cities — killed around 20,000 French civilians between June and August 1944.
The exact number of German casualties is unknown, but historians estimate between 4,000 and 9,000 men were killed, wounded or missing during the D-Day invasion alone.
Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed on D-Day.

The war broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 hostages. They are still holding 56 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. General Nilton Santos, head of the anti-drug police, said the seizures were made during three major operations over the past month.
Off the coast of Tumbes, near the Ecuadorian border, authorities intercepted more than 3,800 pounds (1,740 kilograms) of cocaine at sea.
In Loreto, along the border with Brazil, they confiscated more than 4,600 pounds (2,100 kilograms) of cocaine base paste and cocaine hydrochloride.
Additional raids in Puno, Moquegua, Trujillo, and other cities led to the seizure of another 3,300 pounds (1,511 kilograms) of illicit drugs.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office also reported the arrest of five Peruvians and two foreigners caught transporting 1.5 tons of cocaine on a fishing boat off northern Peru. The “high-purity” cocaine was packed in 23 bundles, each containing about 20 brick-like packets.
Peru seized 165 tons of drugs in 2024 alone.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Peru is the world’s second-largest grower of coca leaf, after Colombia.

“So, when Trump was elected, I was expecting stuff like this. I'm sure that in the past presidencies, there's been billionaires that are in the president's back pocket. But for it to be so public facing like this is, I think, it's sort of staggering, every day. But then when you're staggered every day, it's almost like that's your new walking pace. So, it's a strange time to be in. And we've got what, three and a half years left of this? So, it's not good.”

“You know, I think the chaos that this creates is very worrisome. And the problem I see is that we're getting used to the chaos. We're not seeing the chaos of this administration as a problem anymore. With the markets going up and down, with the relationships with all our friends around the world being impacted negatively. Americans, it doesn't seem to me, are as outraged at this point as they should be for having our reputation besmirched, our economy in jeopardy, loss of jobs, much less the government being so much less effective because of the unprofessional way and unthoughtful ways government was trimmed.”

“I think obviously it's just ridiculous. Essentially, it's the most powerful man on Earth who was using the richest one like a pet. And now they are arguing, it's absolutely ridiculous. I think it doesn't give a proper, rightful image of the United States, I suppose.”
