  • Symbolic stoning of the devil ritual performed in Mina as part of Hajj pilgrimage, AP explains
    (6 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Mina, Saudi Arabia - 6 June 2025
    1. Pilgrims performing stoning of the devil ritual
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, The Associated Press:
"Millions of Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid al-Adha — a holiday that honors the faith and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim. Meanwhile in Saudi Arabia, hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims arrived in Mina for the symbolic stoning of the devil, a ritual that is performed by pilgrims that involves throwing pebbles on the three pillars which symbolize the devil."
    3. Various of symbolic stoning of the devil
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, The Associated Press:
"Pilgrims moved through the site in steady streams, braving temperatures that soared above 45 degrees Celsius (113 F) to complete the spiritually significant act. After the ritual, male pilgrims shave or trim their hair and those who are able to do so, perform animal sacrifices."
    5. Pilgrims performing stoning of the devil ritual
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Baraa Anwer, The Associated Press:
"Pilgrims will then perform Tawaf, circling the black, cube-shaped structure at the heart of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, followed by walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah. After that, they can remove their simple white clothing known as Ihram. For many, it marks the spiritual peak of a journey built on years of saving, planning, and devotion."
    7. Pilgrims performing stoning of the devil ritual
    STORYLINE:
Pilgrims in the Saudi Arabian city of Mina began the stoning of the devil ritual on Eid al-Adha Friday, as one of the last rites of Hajj.
They had collected their pebbles overnight Thursday from Muzdalifah, an area located a few kilometers (miles) away from Arafat, a hill outside the city of Mecca with great spiritual significance.
They must throw seven pebbles at each of the three pillars.
Mina is where Muslims believe the Prophet Ibrahim's faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son Ismail.
The devil appeared before Ibrahim three times, trying to dissuade him from obeying God.
The prophet responded each time by throwing stones at the devil, driving him away.
Ibrahim was prepared to submit to the command, but God stayed his hand and spared his son.
In the Christian and Jewish versions of the story, Abraham is ordered to kill his other son, Isaac.
The Eid al-Adha holiday, observed worldwide by Muslims and timed to coincide with the end of the Hajj, celebrates Ibrahim’s submission to God.
After the stoning ritual, men shaved their head and women trimmed their hair by a length of a fingertip.
Those who could afford it sacrificed an animal.
Saudi officials were stationed throughout Mina to assist pilgrims, providing them with directions and distributing water to ease the strain of the heat.
Temperatures reached a high of 46 degrees Celsius (114 degrees Fahrenheit) on Friday.
Many pilgrims went to Mecca afterwards to circuit the Kaaba, the black,... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
Five people were killed as they attempted to collect aid on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip, hospital officials said Friday.
The officials at Nassar Hospital said the five victims, whose bodies were brought there, were shot dead as they tried to collect aid on the western edge of the city of Rafah.
In northern Gaza on Friday, Israel issued a new warning to civilians saying the military was about to undertake intensive operations in an area after it said rockets were fired toward Israel from the sector.
The death of the five people came after shootings erupted nearly daily over the past two weeks in the Gaza Strip in the vicinity of new hubs where desperate Palestinians are being directed to collect food.
Witnesses say nearby Israeli troops have opened fire.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a newly formed group of mainly American contractors, said Friday that all distribution centers are closed for the day urging people to stay away from the areas for their own safety.
It added that an announcement will be made later about the times during which the centers will be active.
Officials at GHF did not immediately respond to questions by The Associated Press regarding the latest reports of shooting that killed five on Friday.

Nigerian Muslims in Lagos celebrated Eid al-Adha on Friday, despite economic pressures dampening feasts.
Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is the Islamic holiday that begins on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during the Hajj.
During the festive holiday, Muslims slaughter sheep or cattle and distribute some meat to poor people - but many families are grappling with the steep cost of rams for the traditional sacrifice.
"We know the economy is a bit on the high side and everything is hard, but we should look beyond that and see the positive side of things, celebrate, be joyful,” worshipper Amira Mustapha said.
For Abbas Shuab, Eid al-Adha is also an opportunity to focus on the positives.

    STORYLINE:
Paris' Grand Palais unveiled Friday a new immersive exhibition which invites visitors to touch and feel the art on show.
“Usually when you approach the art, it is something that you can watch but you cannot touch,” explains Roberto Fantauzzi the founder of the Balloon Museum, which creates inflatable art events.
Here, however, he says, “it is forbidden not to touch."
For “The Me that Becomes Through You,” New York artist Alex Schweder collaborated with composer Nick Dunston to transform air into musical notes as it fills up large spheres contained in a cage.
“Each sphere has an organ, like in a church, where the wind from the fan that fills the sphere is making sound. It’s always playing live because the sequence, each form has a different loop. And so they’re always harmonising and changing one another's sound,” Schweder says.
The exhibition, titled “Euphoria: Art is in the Air”, runs from June 6 to Sept. 7, 2025, at the Grand Palais.
The previous edition of the show in 2022 became the most successful exhibit of the year for Paris, attracting more than 700,000 visitors.
It means the Grand Palais should return with a bang after its 4-year renovation.

Muslims around the world were on Friday celebrating Eid Al-Adha, a festival of sacrifice that commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son.
The day is marked with prayers, the symbolic sacrifice of animals and sharing food and gifts with family and friends.
Kenyan Muslims in Nairobi on Friday took part in celebrations and prayed for Muslims in the Gaza strip as they struggle to celebrate the occasion, with no fresh meat having entered the territory in three months and all homegrown sheep, cattle and goats dead after 20 months of Israeli attacks.
“We ask Allah to hear their [Palestinian] cries,"said Abdulrahman Mursal, as he led Eid prayers as an Imam in Nairobi.
"We feel their pain, as much as we are far from them. But what unites us is our Muslim brotherhood, so we ask Allah to give them victory and to give victory to all the other Muslims wherever they are, if they are facing any kind of oppression,” he added.
