STORYLINE:

Thousands of Thais rallied Saturday to call for the resignation of suspended prime minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and to show support for Thailand’s armed forces, following recent fierce battles on the border with Cambodian troops.

Braving soaring temperatures, they gathered at Bangkok’s Victory Monument to sing patriotic songs and listen to speeches denouncing Paetongtarn and her father, former leader Thaksin Shinawatra.

Several days of clashes between the two countries’ armed forces ended this week in an uneasy ceasefire, brokered by Malaysia.

They had been contesting a number of pockets of land, which both sides claim as their sovereign territory.

It’s a dispute which stretches back decades. More than three dozen people – soldiers and civilians – were killed, with more than 260,000 people displaced.

Some Thais say Paetongtarn and her family helped cause the conflict because of their former close ties to powerful Cambodian former leader Hun Sen.

She’s currently suspended after Hun Sen leaked a recording of a phone conversation in which she called him “uncle” and appeared to have denigrated a Thai general.

For the protesters, her suspension isn’t enough and they are demanding she resign.

“Ung Ing you need to get out,” said one well-known protester, Jittakorn Bussaba, using the prime minister’s nickname.

“And the reason is because there’s blood on your hands. People have died because of you,” he said from the stage to general applause.

“I’m here to help oust the government and protect Thai sovereignty and to support the soldiers,” said 75-year-old Kittiwat who only gave one name.

58-year-old Ammorn Khunthong, agreed.

Einav Zangauker, the mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, said that everything Israel has done so far has failed to secure the release of all the hostages.

“The only thing we haven’t tried yet is a comprehensive agreement in exchange for ending the war,” Zangauker said, addressing the crowd.

SpaceX delivered a fresh crew to the International Space Station on Saturday, making the trip in a quick 15 hours.

The four U.S., Russian and Japanese astronauts pulled up in their SpaceX capsule after launching from NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

They will spend at least six months at the orbiting lab, swapping places with colleagues up there since March. SpaceX will bring those four back as early as Wednesday.

Moving in are NASA's Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japan's Kimiya Yui and Russia's Oleg Platonov — each of whom had been originally assigned to other missions.

“Hello, space station!” Fincke radioed as soon as the capsule docked high above the South Pacific.

Every morning, Abeer and Fadi Sobh wake up in their tent in the Gaza Strip to the same question: How will they find food for themselves and their six young children?

The couple has three options: Maybe a charity kitchen will be open and they can get a pot of watery lentils. Or they can try jostling through crowds to get some flour from a passing aid truck. The last resort is begging.

If those all fail, they simply don't eat. It happens more and more these days, as hunger saps their energy, strength and hope.

Explosions and smoke were seen over the Gaza Strip from southern Israel early on Saturday as Israel continues with its offensive into the enclave.

This comes as officials at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza said Friday they received the bodies of 13 people who were killed while trying to get aid, including near the site that U.S. officials visited.

GHF denied anyone was killed at their sites on Friday.

The Israeli military said its forces had fired warning shots hundreds of meters (yards) away from the aid site at people it described as suspects and said had ignored orders to distance themselves from its forces.

It said it was not aware of any casualties but was still investigating.

Another 23 people were killed and dozens wounded near the Israeli-run Zikim Crossing, the main entry point for aid to northern Gaza, according to the director of Shifa Hospital, which received the bodies.

International experts warned this week that a “worst-case scenario of famine” is playing out in Gaza.

Israel's nearly 22-month military offensive against Hamas has shattered security in the territory of some two million Palestinians and made it nearly impossible to safely deliver food to starving people.

A tidal wave of Palestinians walked back from the Zikim crossing, some of them carrying sacks of flour on their shoulders as hunger-related deaths continue to mount across the enclave, according to the Ministry of Health figures.

Men were seen carrying wounded people from near the aid entry site, and others were screaming and crying over the dead bodies of their loved ones - including a boy - taken to Hamad Al-Qatari hospital.

Daunted and exhausted, Safaa Taroush said that food is brought from under death.

“My son went to get a flour bag and he came back injured," said Taroush. "I asked my son not to go and I wanted to march toward death myself. I would never send my kids to die.”

Hadeel Abu Tabikh said that this was her first time to attempt to get some aid from the trucks.

“I have reached a desperate level of hunger, and I am unable to feed my kids. We do not have another source to buy food, we eat tree leaves,” Abu Tabikh said in tears.

“Hamas, who claims they care about us, do you want victory? You are not victorious. You starved us and you starved our children. Every day, thousands of martyrs die. Are they not your children? Those who die? Are they not Palestinians?” Abu Tabikh added.

International outcry over images of emaciated children and increasing reports of hunger-related deaths have pressured Israel to let more aid into the Gaza Strip. This week, Israel paused fighting in parts of Gaza and air dropped food.

But aid groups and Palestinians say the changes have only been incremental and are not enough to reverse what food experts say is a “worst-case scenario of famine” unfolding in the war-ravaged territory.

The new measures have brought an uptick in the number of aid trucks entering Gaza. But almost none of it reaches U.N. warehouses for distribution.
