STORYLINE:

At an “Intergenerational Summer Camp” in Fullerton, California, grandmas are in charge.

Every week, they teach a group of 8-to-14-year-olds how to cook a new dish, and a handicraft such as sewing, embroidering, clay jewelry and card marking.

During the last week of camp in July, youths were taught by grandmas and others how to use a sewing machine and make pouches.

The camp is conducted by Olive Community Services, a nonprofit aimed at bringing older adults together.

The kids also learn about kitchen safety and how to cook with a grandma's touch — such as mixing spices with water before adding them to a dish so they don't burn, or using fresh turmeric.

The summer camp was done in partnership with the Golden Connections Club, started by high school student Leena Albinali last year to foster interactions between teens and elders.

Dr. Wafaa Alrashid noticed fewer and fewer of her patients at the Los Angeles area hospital where she worked were showing up for their appointments as immigration raids spread fear among the Latino population she served.

The Utah-born chief medical officer at Huntington Hospital understood their fear on a personal level. She was married to a Tunisian singer and classical musician with a pending green card application.

With immigration agents arresting hundreds of people in Southern California and prompting protests against the federal raids and the subsequent deployment of the National Guard and Marines, her husband, Rami Othmane, began carrying a receipt for his application to a pathway to legal residency for spouses of U.S. citizens.

On July 13, Othmane had his paperwork with him when he was stopped while driving to the grocery store in Pasadena. He quickly pulled it out to show federal immigration agents.

“They didn’t care, they said, ‘Please step out of the car,’ ” Alrashid recalled hearing the officers say as she watched her husband’s arrest in horror over Facetime.

Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, has been moved from a federal prison in Florida to a prison camp in Texas as her criminal case generates renewed public attention.

The federal Bureau of Prisons said Friday that Maxwell had been transferred to Bryan, Texas, but did not explain the circumstances. Her attorney, David Oscar Markus, also confirmed the move but declined to discuss the reasons for it.

Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of luring teenage girls to be sexually abused by the disgraced financier, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She had been held at a low-security prison in Tallahassee, Florida, until her transfer to the prison camp in Texas, where other inmates include Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and Jen Shah of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.”

Minimum-security federal prison camps house inmates the Bureau of Prisons considers to be the lowest security risk. Some don’t even have fences.

The prison camps were originally designed with low security to make operations easier and to allow inmates tasked with performing work at the prison, like landscaping and maintenance, to avoid repeatedly checking in and out of a main prison facility.

Actor Gary Busey has pleaded guilty to a sexual offense stemming from an appearance at a 2022 horror convention in New Jersey, according to his representatives and court records.

The 81-year-old “Buddy Holly” star's manager, Ron Sampson, said in an email Friday that the actor admitted to touching a woman's buttocks "over clothing during an 8-10 second photo op.”

Busey entered a guilty plea to a single count of criminal sexual contact during a virtual hearing in state court in Camden on Thursday.

The actor had been accused of inappropriately touching at least three women at the Monster-Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill, a South Jersey town and suburb of Philadelphia.

Organizers of the event acknowledged at the time that an unnamed celebrity guest was "removed from the convention and instructed not to return" and that affected attendees were encouraged to contact police.

Busey had been scheduled as a featured guest for all three days of the event. He was initially charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment.

Busey’s lawyer, Blair Zwillman, confirmed Friday that the other charges were dropped as part of a plea deal reached with prosecutors. The actor faces up to five years’ probation and fines when he is sentenced Sept. 18.

“In my view Mr. Busey was ‘overcharged’ probably based on his star status,” Zwillman said in an email. “He could have just as easily been charged with the disorderly persons offense of harassment by 'offensive touching'.”

Spokespersons for Camden County prosecutors didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday.

Busey is widely known as a character actor, largely in supporting roles, though he came to attention and was nominated for an Oscar for best actor for playing the title role in the 1978 film “The Buddy Holly Story.”

STORYLINE:

Dozens of faithful to the Andean tradition of worshiping nature and the earth made offerings at the La Cumbre sacred site on Friday, located on the outskirts of the Bolivian capital, La Paz.

According to popular belief, pilgrimages to sacred mountain sites and the act of receiving the first rays of sunlight are believed to bring renewed energy.

For ancient cultures and their descendants, the Solstice marks the start of the new agricultural calendar in communities along the foothills of the Andes.

August 1 marks a date in which the Pachamama "opens her mouth," an opportunity for her believers to feed her with the gains of the year and make pleas.

Sacrificing llamas, the camelids native to the region, is one of the main rituals.

It is known as "Wilancha", spilling blood, in which the dead animal should be burnt as part of the offering.

At this sacred site, Yatiris, or traditional spiritual guides, also offer rituals to clients.
