    11. Díaz Batres inspecting cocoons UPSOUND Eugenia Díaz Batres (Spanish): "I have hung them (cocoons) on these lines because I no longer have the pirul (tree) where they were, but if it (moth) emerges, it stays perched and little by little it stretches its wings."

    "When I get here and find this, I jump, I mean, I love them."
    23. Various of moths
    STORYLINE:
    Two moths the size of a hand, their wings patterned with brown and pink around four translucent sections, mate for hours hanging from a line alongside cocoons like the ones they emerged from just hours earlier.
    Biologist María Eugenia Díaz Batres has been caring for insects at the Museum of Natural History and Environmental Culture in Mexico City for nearly six decades.
    The mating pair of "four mirrors" moths as they’re popularly known in Mexico, or scientifically as Rothschildia orizaba, are evidence that the museum’s efforts to save some 2,600 cocoons rescued from an empty lot were worth the trouble.
    The moths, whose numbers have fallen in Mexico City due to urbanization, have cultural relevance in Mexico.
    The Aztecs called them the "butterfly of obsidian knives", Itzpapalotl, according Díaz Batres.

  • Faizan Zaki overcomes a shocking, self-inflicted flub and wins the Scripps National Spelling Bee
    (30 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Oxon Hill, Maryland - 29 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Faizan Zaki, Scripps National Spelling Bee champion:
    “Commelina. Oh my God. That was like, I'm definitely going to be having nightmares about that tonight. But other than that, I do regret like spending a lot of time on the spell off because like, I think I got too overprepared because I did a practice one, I got 43 out of 45. So, I think I really overdid that, so it's insane, (they) didn't even do it this year. But other than that I'm really happy. No regrets."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Faizan Zaki, Scripps National Spelling Bee champion:
    "Like, that got in my head and when I got commeline, I got K-A-M, oh no, it's wrong, so."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Faizan Zaki, Scripps National Spelling Bee champion:
    "I, honestly, I wasn't thinking, I was thinking of another word, kamleika, which is spelled k-a-m-e-l-a-i-k-a, and since I like, then I realized it's not a K sound, it's an N sound. And then I realized 'oh my God, it's not k-a-m, it's c-o-m-m-e-l-i-n-a. And like, I studied that like many, many times. So when I got that, I was disappointed. But since I got back, it wasn't that big of a deal."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Faizan Zaki, Scripps National Spelling Bee champion:
    "After that, I knew I really could win. So, like, I really, like, had that ability to win, right? So I got back, composed myself after that, and I spelled my two words correctly, or three I think after that, and then I won."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Faizan Zaki, Scripps National Spelling Bee champion:
    "So, 'eclaircissement', that was a relatively easy word that I recognized and I just decided to go for it, obviously slower, I still spelled it like e-c-l, so it was so I wouldn't accidentally misspeak or say something wrong."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Faizan Zaki, Scripps National Spelling Bee champion:
    "A lot of it will go to charity for sure since we're not the... so me and my family we're not the richest but we're not the poorest, so I want to give back to the people who might not be as fortunate as me."
    ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
    Faizan Zaki's enthusiasm for spelling nearly got the better of him. Ultimately, his joyful approach made him the Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.
    The favorite entering the bee after his runner-up finish last year — during which he never misspelled a word in a conventional spelling round, only to lose a lightning-round tiebreaker that he didn't practice for — the shaggy-haired Faizan wore the burden of expectations lightly, sauntering to the microphone in a black hoodie and spelling his words with casual glee.
    Throughout Thursday night's finals, the 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, looked like a champion in waiting.
    Then he nearly threw it away. But even a shocking moment of overconfidence couldn't prevent him from seizing the title of best speller in the English language.
    With the bee down to three spellers, Sarvadnya Kadam and Sarv Dharavane missed their words back-to-back, putting Faizan two words away from victory. The first was “commelina,” but instead of asking the requisite questions — definition, language of origin — to make sure he knew it, Faizan let his showman's instincts take over.
    “K-A-M,” he said, then stopped himself. “OK, let me do this. Oh, shoot!”
    “Just ring the bell,” he told head judge Mary Brooks, who obliged.
    “So now you know what happens,” Brooks said, and the other two spellers returned to the stage.

  • Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says he's not running for president, but he has advice for Democrats
    (30 May 2025)

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Annapolis, Maryland - 28 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Wes Moore, (D) Maryland, on advice for Democrats at a gathering in South Carolina this week:
    "Well my my message is it's time for us to be bold, you know that we have a really unique opportunity right now to to be about the change, to move fast, to move with a sense of urgency You know we're here with the celebration of Congressman Parren Mitchell, you know, a person who is bold in his actions and that's exactly what I think we are doing here in the state of Maryland. When you think about all the progress that we're making around everything from criminal justice reform and education and employment, we are being bold. We're moving fast and I think it's an important model for the rest of the country."
    2. Wide of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore bowing his head at event
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Wes Moore, (D) Maryland, on his potential as a future presidential nominee:
    "Well, I'm not running and and people should get very used to me going all over the country bringing business back to Maryland because that's exactly what I plan on doing as long as I'm the governor of the state. I mean we're going down there. We're meeting with businesses. We're talking about why Maryland is such a remarkable place. Our population in Maryland is growing. Our job growth is the fastest in the nation. We are now seeing new business starts that are increasing for the first time in a decade. Our unemployment is among the lowest in this country and so I'm really excited about the momentum we're seeing in Maryland right now. And I want to make sure that every business around the country understands that and sees it."
    ++ENDS ON A SOUNDBITE++
    STORYLINE:
    Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has been saying for months that he does not plan to run for president in 2028.
    That isn’t stopping persistent talk about his future political plans, though. He's often mentioned as a potential candidate for national office.
    While Moore says he’s focusing on being governor, he is still making appearances that get him national attention outside of Maryland.
    On Friday, he is set to travel to speak at the Blue Palmetto Dinner in the early primary state of South Carolina.
    Moore says he’s keeping focused on being the state’s governor during a challenging time.
    “I’m not running,” Moore told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday. He also said when asked that he isn’t trying to get his name in the conversation for a potential vice presidential candidacy, either.
    The trip to South Carolina includes meetings with business prospects, Moore said.
    “And people should get very used to me going all over the country bringing business back to Maryland, because that's exactly what I plan on doing as long as I'm the governor of the state,” Moore said after a dedication in Annapolis for a memorial to former Rep. Parren Mitchell, the state's first Black congressman.
    Moore, 46, is the state’s first Black governor, and the only Black governor currently serving. He is the former CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, an anti-poverty nonprofit. He also is a Rhodes scholar and a combat veteran who served in Afghanistan.

    19. The Trump character
    STORYLINE:
    As Detroit Opera officials made plans last fall to add a production based on the Central Park Five to their 2025 lineup, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump loomed large and just offstage.
    The opera puts to music the story of five Black and Latino teens imprisoned for the 1989 rape and beating of a white woman in New York’s Central Park and prominently features Trump as a real estate showman calling for the death penalty in the case.
    Booking the production reflected a modern commitment to adding diverse and contemporary stories to opera houses in Detroit and elsewhere in the U.S., stages where classic composers have long reigned.

    Whether plain, oozing with extra cheese or dripping with ketchup, Istanbul’s beloved street snack — the supersized “kumpir” — is no ordinary baked potato.
    Locals and visitors alike flock to the city’s waterfront neighborhood of Ortakoy, where vendors expertly split and stuff hulking jacket potatoes with spoonfuls of pickled red cabbage to scoops of creamy Russian salad and everything in between.
    This vibrant and towering heap of comfort food is a flavorful salute to the versatility of the humble spud that’s being honored worldwide on Friday, the International Day of Potato.
    In 2023, the United Nations declared May 30 as the day to celebrate the tuber — a common nutritional crop with more than 5,000 varieties consumed by billions of people across the globe, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
    Vendors in Istanbul say an average of 2 to 3 tons of potatoes are consumed each month during peak season.
    Cultivated primarily in central Turkey, these spuds are specifically chosen for their size.
    “‘You remember the potatoes? Yes! Let’s meet over there.’”
    Rahime Yoldas agrees.

    Rahime Yoldas, an Istanbul local, believes the fixed price of 300 Turkish Lira ($7.60 USD) and free top ups is particularly appealing to Turkish families on a budget.
    “It’s a great meal because it’s huge,” Yoldas commented between bites of the dish she savored with her daughter. “Two people can comfortably eat it and be satisfied.”

    I think it's outrageous. I think it's sickening. I think it's a dark day for this country. You know, this is, this is the Biden administration and the Democratic Party doing what they've tried to do for the last six years. This is just another extension of that. I think it's outrageous."

    "Mr President I understand, as you do, the tremendous challenge that faces America in securing our nation and its citizens from the threat of terrorism and I know what is at stake. On September 11, 2001 I witnessed first hand the very worst of humanity and its very best. I saw hatred claim the lives of 24-hundred innocent people and I saw the bravest men and women I will ever know rescue more than 20-thousand others. There isn't a day that has passed since the morning of September 11th that I haven't thought of the sacrifices of those heroes and the losses we all suffered. I promise you, Mr President, that both the memory of those courageous souls and the horrors I saw inflicted upon our proud nation will serve as permanent reminders of the awesome responsibility you place in my charge."

    7. Then New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani walking up street after buildings collapsed, Kerik (in white shirt with face mask) approaches him and speaks to him
    STORYLINE:
    Bernard Kerik, who served as New York City's police commissioner on 9/11 and later pleaded guilty to tax fraud before being pardoned, has died. He was 69.
    The New York Police Department confirmed his death Thursday on social media.
    FBI Director Kash Patel said his death came “after a private battle with illness.”
    Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani reflected on his long history with his former police commissioner on his show Thursday.
    “We’ve been together since the beginning. He’s like my brother,” Giuliani said through tears. “I was a better man for having known Bernie. I certainly was a braver and stronger man.”
    Kerik, an Army veteran, rose to the pinnacle of law enforcement before a fall so steep that even a city jail named after him was renamed.
    In 2010, he pleaded guilty to federal tax fraud and false statement charges, partially stemming from over $250,000 in apartment renovations he received from a construction firm that authorities say counted on Kerik to convince New York officials it had no organized crime links. He served three years in prison before his release in 2013.
    Kerik was appointed by Giuliani to serve as police commissioner in 2000 and was in the position during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
    In 2005, Kerik founded the Kerik Group, a crisis and risk management consulting firm.

  • Luis Montenegro appointed as Prime Minister of Portugal following elections results

    5. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Luis Montenegro, designated Portuguese Prime Minister: ++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT AND IS PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOT6++
    “We will not make any permanent agreement of governance or parliamentary, we will speak with all political forces in the search for the best legislative and executive solutions to respond to the needs of the Portuguese and we count with everybody for that, naturally.”
    6. Wide of Montenegro talking
    STORYLINE:
    The Portuguese President has appointed Luis Montenegro as Prime Minister of Portugal, following the results of the recent election.
    The official confirmation followed a series of meetings between Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and leaders from the most voted parties that resulted from the 18 May ballot.
    “Mr. President of the Republic has appointed me to form a government, this will be a task for the coming days," Montenegro said following his meeting.
    Montenegro is leader of the Democratic Alliance (AD) and president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
    With the final counting of the ballots from overseas voters on Wednesday, the center-right DA captured two more seats to take its tally to 88.
    “I informed the President of the Republic that our understanding is that the popular will must be respected so the Socialist Party will not participate in any action that hinders the viability of the government that comes from the elections," Carlos Cesar, the President of the Socialist Party said following his meeting with de Sousa.
    Portugal’s anti-immigration Chega party gained the other two, notching another political gain for Europe's far right on after it was assigned the second-most seats in parliament — it will now become the head of the parliamentary opposition to the new government.
    "We also expressed clearly to the President and what we assured to the country as well, Chega has a mandate to be the leader of the opposition and it will exercise that role with responsibility of leadership," Andre Ventura, leader of Chega party said.
    Following the election, incoming Prime Minister Luis Montenegro was already looking at heading another minority government similar to the one that fell two months ago in a confidence vote after less than a year in power.
    But now Montenegro and other parties will face an emboldened far-right competitor that campaigned under the slogan “Save Portugal” and describes itself as a nationalist party.
    The results of Chega shatter the pattern of Portugal’s center-right and center-left mainstream parties alternating between heading a government or leading the opposition.
