“Japan's discharges of the treated radioactive water from Fukushima Daiichi that began in August 2023 and China's ban on Japanese seafood have become a significant political and diplomatic point of tension. STORYLINE:
China will resume Japanese seafood imports from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, a Japanese minister said on Friday.
Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the agreement was reached after officials met in Beijing and the imports will resume once paperwork is complete.
China said talks this week made “substantial progress,” but did not confirm an agreement with Japan on the issue that has been a significant political and diplomatic point of tension.
Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya also welcomed the move.
But officials said China's ban on farm and fisheries products from 10 Japanese prefectures, including Fukushima, is still in place and that they will keep pushing toward their lifting.
China's General Administration of Customs said in a statement on Friday that the two sides held "a new round of technical exchanges on the safety issues of Japanese aquatic products ... and achieved substantial progress,” but did not mention an agreement.
China blocked imports of Japanese seafood because it said the release of the treated and diluted but still slightly radioactive wastewater would endanger the fishing industry and coastal communities in eastern China.
Japanese officials have said the wastewater will be safer than international standards and its environmental impact will be negligible.
They say the wastewater must be released to make room for the nuclear plant’s decommissioning and to prevent accidental leaks.
Tokyo and Beijing held three rounds of talks since March on the issue before reaching the agreement this week on the “technical requirements” necessary for Japanese seafood exports to China to restart, Japan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

    STORYLINE:
A natural stone quarry in Indonesia’s West Java province collapsed on several people who were working in it, killing at least 10 people and leaving six workers missing, officials say.
More than two dozen people were trapped in the rubble when the mine in Cirebon district collapsed, and rescuers were able to pull a dozen injured people from the debris during a grueling search effort.
“This is the result of an error in the mining method," said Bambang Tirto Yuliono, Head of Energy and Mineral Resources Service of West Java province.
The search was suspended Friday as darkness fell and will be resumed early Saturday.
Illegal or informal mining operations are commonplace in Indonesia, providing a tenuous livelihood to those who labor in conditions with a high risk of injury or death.

"I feel like it was so important whether you're talking from the early, Billy Crystal on 'Soap' playing that gay character, who, obviously a character, actor who wasn't gay at all, but like, at a time when we were trying so hard to have legitimacy, to fight for equal rights, to fighting for respect, just basic, decency of treatment, it was maybe really hard for people to come out to their families or to their co-workers and stuff, but the more that we had those characters on television, like 'Will and Grace', like 'Modern Family,' like our show, that that was really, in some way, more powerful than a great film like 'Brokeback Mountain,' which was sort of epic and mythological in scope. It was like, I know that guy, he's friend of mine, because that's what it feels like with people in television. Like they're literally in your living room and they make you laugh."

    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jimmy Sham, activist:
"I don't know. Maybe tomorrow. you still can see me, I am free. Maybe tomorrow, I will go back to the jail. I don't know."
    STORYLINE:
Hong Kong's prominent pro-democracy and LGBTQ+ activist Jimmy Sham was released from prison on Friday after serving over four years in the city's biggest national security case under a Beijing-imposed law.
Sham's activism made headlines during 2019 anti-government protests, when he was the convenor of a now-disbanded pro-democracy group that organized some of the biggest peaceful marches that year, including one that drew an estimated 2 million people.
Sham was among 47 activists arrested in 2021 for their roles in an unofficial primary election.
He was sentenced with 44 other activists last year after judges ruled that their plans to effect change through the primary would have undermined the government’s authority and create a constitutional crisis.
Only two of the original defendants were acquitted.
Even behind bars, Sham continued to fight for recognition of his same-sex marriage registered overseas at the city's top court, which later ruled the government should provide a framework for recognizing same-sex partnerships.
It was a landmark decision for the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
“I feel happy. No matter whether there’s a change in (my) freedom, I am definitely freer compared to yesterday,” Sham told reporters Friday after he was reunited with his family.
“But I also know many people are suffering. This makes me feel I shouldn’t be too happy.”
Asked if police had warned him not to talk to anyone, he said he censored himself on some sensitive questions.
Sham also sounded unsure whether he was a free man.
“Maybe tomorrow, you still can see me, I am free. Maybe tomorrow, I will go back to the jail. I don’t know,” he said.
The activist said he has no plans to leave Hong Kong for now.
"So what I can do in the future and what I should, and where the red line lies, I still have to figure it out again.”
Sham and three other activists freed on Friday — Kinda Li, Roy Tam and Henry Wong — are the second batch to be reunited with their families, following the release of four pro-democracy lawmakers last month.

“If they (Hamas) want guarantees, we will give them guarantees that after the last hostages will back to Israel, we will stop the war. I'm telling you, Netanyahu, say yes. All our countries say yes, the families say yes. All the families, when we are saying, stop the war and give us the hostages back, that is the meaning. Not the opposite. And then they have some more times till we will come back again.”
    12. Various of photos of hostages and people at hostages’ square.
    STORYLINE:
Ayelet Samerano, the mother of Yonatan Samerano, whose body is believed to be held in Gaza, said on Friday that any agreement between Israel and Hamas must include all hostages, as their families cannot bear the pain of seeing only a chosen few released once again.
"It's again a selection, you know, all the families, we are right now standing and thinking, is it going to be my son? isn't? What will be after part of them will come, what will be with the rest," Samerano said in an interview with the Associated Press.
"I can't describe what we are feeling," she added.
Samerano, one of the hostage family members who met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, said Hamas' demand to end the war should only be met if they release all hostages.
"If they (Hamas) want guarantees, we will give them guarantees that after the last hostages will back to Israel, we will stop the war," she said.

“The relevant remarks by the U.S. government are filled with ideological bias and a Cold War zero-sum mentality. Any attempt to smear and attack the Communist Party of China, vilify China's path and system, or drive a wedge between the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people is delusional and presumptuous. Such attempts will be firmly opposed by the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people and are doomed to fail.”

“China firmly opposes U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan region of China and urges the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, especially the provisions of the August 17 Communiqué. The U.S. must stop selling arms to Taiwan and stop creating tensions in the Taiwan Strait. China’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering.”

“The U.S. approach of overstretching the concept of national security and politicizing and instrumentalizing economic, trade, and technological issues is to maliciously block and suppress China. We firmly oppose it and will resolutely safeguard our legitimate rights and interests.”

    STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday hailed the establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOM) in Hong Kong, saying it “fills a gap in the international mediation mechanism.”
Representatives of more than 30 other countries, from Pakistan and Indonesia to Belarus and Cuba, signed the Convention on the establishment of international mediation-based dispute resolution group to become founding members of the global organization, following Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
“China looks forward to the early ratification of the Convention by all signatory states and welcomes more countries to join, promoting the Mediation Institute’s active role in the peaceful resolution of international disputes,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters at a daily news briefing in Beijing.
The support of developing countries signaled Beijing's rising influence in the global south amid heightened geopolitical tensions, partly exacerbated by U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariffs.
