“I got in on the same little deal that's been going on for years where I get my bags checked in for free. So I'm sorry for the people that are now going to have to pay, you know, for their luggage. But you know times are changing. You get charged for all the little conveniences that you got used to.”

    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Angelina Meng, Southwest Passenger:
“That's a terrible thing because I always fly and I always love to fly Southwest and I think it's amazing because it's very comfortable they're in charge of all the bags and it's open seat and plus you know you get really good prices on the flights.”
    9. Various of passengers checking in bags at Southwest Airlines
    STORYLINE:
Southwest Airlines began charging customers a fee to check bags on Wednesday, abandoning a decades-long practice that executives had described last fall as key to differentiating the budget carrier from its rivals.
The airline announced the change in March, saying at the time that the the new policy would start with flights booked on Wednesday.
Southwest said Tuesday that it will be charging $35 for a first checked bag and $45 for a second checked bag. Weight and size limits will apply for bags.
Southwest had built years of advertising campaigns around its policy of letting passengers check up to two bags for free. Under its new policy, people who haven’t either reached the upper tiers of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, bought a business class ticket or hold the airline’s credit card will have to pay for checked bags.
Southwest will continue to offer two free checked bags to Rapid Rewards A-List preferred members and customers traveling on Business Select fares, and one free checked bag to A-List members and other select customers. Passengers with Rapid Rewards credit cards will receive a credit for one checked bag.
People who don’t qualify for those categories will get charged to check bags. The airline said in March that it also would roll out a new, basic fare on its lowest priced tickets when the change takes effect.
The airline estimated in September that charging bag fees would bring in about $1.5 billion a year but cost the airline $1.8 billion in lost business from customers who chose to fly Southwest because of its generous baggage allowance.
Another policy that will take effect on Wednesday is Southwest requiring passengers to keep their portable chargers in plain sight while using them because of concerns about the growing number of lithium-ion battery fires.
These aren’t the only changes at Southwest. The Dallas airline previously announced that it was leaving behind another Southwest tradition, the open-boarding system it has used for more than 50 years. Southwest expects to begin operating flights with passengers in assigned seats next year.
The airline also said last year that it would charge customers extra for more legroom and offer red-eye flights.
The airline announced in February that it was eliminating 1,750 jobs, or 15% of its corporate workforce, in the first major layoffs in the company’s 53-year history.

  • Hundreds of desperate Palestinians storm into a WFP warehouse in Gaza
    (28 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Zawaida, Salah Al-Deen Street, central Gaza Strip - 28 May 2025
    1. Various of large number of people at a United Nations World Food Programme warehouse to get bags of flour
    2. Various of people at warehouse, some holding up bags of flour
    3. Various of people carrying bags of flour and leaving
    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of desperate Palestinians stormed into a U.N. World Food Program warehouse in the central Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
People shouted and pushed against each other in the shadow of the cavernous warehouse's main door, as others ripped off pieces of the metal walls in an effort to get inside.
Scores of aid-seekers could be seen carrying large bags of flour as they shoved their way back out into the sunlight through throngs of people pressing to get inside.
Each bag of flour weighs around 25 kilograms (55 pounds).
Palestinians have become increasingly desperate for food as nearly three months of Israeli border closures have pushed Gaza to the brink of famine.
It was still not clear Wednesday if Israeli forces, private contractors or others opened fire when a crowd overran a new Israeli and U.S.-backed aid distribution site a day earlier.
Gaza's Health Ministry said Wednesday that at least one Palestinian was killed and 48 were wounded.
The U.N. and other humanitarian organizations have rejected the new system, saying it won’t be able to meet the needs of Gaza’s 2.3 million people and allows Israel to use food to control the population.
Israel has vowed to seize control of Gaza and fight until Hamas is destroyed or disarmed and exiled, and until the militant group returns the remaining 58 hostages.
Around a third of them are believed to be alive. Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the 2023 attack.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed around 54,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
It says women and children make up most of the dead but does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its tally.

Don't you think that's a bit rude? Yes, I am launching a political party. All the leaders of Western countries have failed. They're forcing a generational failure upon their constituents. Donald Trump is the future of the Western world. Everybody knows it and everybody needs to get in line and obey him. He runs the world. He's a good friend of mine and I'm going to help him."

I will comply with all judicial authorities everywhere around the world because I'm completely innocent, as we all know. And for anybody here who wants to do honest journalism, you need to ask yourselves why there is this witch-hunt. Why the matrix is so desperate to try and convince the world I'm a bad person and put me in jail when I've clearly done nothing wrong? It's been three solid years they can't even find enough evidence to take me to trial."

  • 'Bring Her Back' directors still had creative freedom on second film

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    West Hollywood, Calif. - 12 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Philippou and Danny Philippou, directors:
Michael Philippou: "A lot of people were saying to us, 'This next movie, whatever you do, there's going to be so much more people involved.' But that's why A24, we think, are the best, because they don't do that. They're so director-driven, artist-driven. They allow people to pursue their visions their way, and they just assist you as much as you need them to."
Danny Philippou: "Yeah - what we wanted. Like, whatever we needed from them, we could get from them. In fact, we would send them drafts and be like, 'What do you think of this?' And send them cuts. You know, like, what are your opinions on this? And there's also like this cool thing that sometimes A24 does as well, where they screen cuts of their films to other film directors that are at A24 and stuff like that, so it's cool."
(Reporter: "That's cool. Is there anybody notable who watched your films?")
    Danny Philippou: "Oh my gosh!"
Michael Philippou: "No one was watching ours."
Danny Philippou: "I did it for other films!"

  • Merz says Germany will increase its support to Ukraine after meeting with Zelenskyy in Berlin
    (28 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Berlin - 28 May
    1. Wide of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor, arriving
    2. SOUNDBITE (German) Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor:
“We will continue our military support and even increase it, so that Ukraine can continue to defend itself against this Russian aggression – now and in the future. And I want to stress something new in this context. We are financing a considerable part of the Starlink coverage of the country. And our defense ministers are going to sign a memorandum of understanding on the procurement of long range weapon systems produced by Ukraine – so-called long range fires. There will be no range limits on these. Ukraine will be able to fully defend itself including against military targets outside its own territory.”
    3. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"I am glad that today there are new agreements between our states on joint projects. We will not publicly discuss all the details, but today we have agreements on investment in production in Ukraine and first of all, these are weapons. This is the production of drones, that will enable us most effectively to protect the lives of our soldiers."
    4. Wide of Zelenskyy and Merz leaving
    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday as Ukraine seeks further military support amid a recent escalation in Russia's bombing campaign, despite U.S.-led efforts to end the war.
Zelenskyy called for deeper defense cooperation across Europe and with the United States, stressing the need for long-range capabilities and sustained military funding to ensure Ukraine’s resilience.
Germany has been the second-biggest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States.
Merz has plunged into diplomatic efforts to try to secure a ceasefire and keep Western support for Ukraine intact since becoming Germany’s leader three weeks ago.
“We will continue to increase the pressure on Russia. We are doing this in order to weaken the war machine of Moscow. But we are doing it also to open to path to negotiations," Merz said, speaking in Berlin.
European leaders have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of dragging his feet in U.S.-led peace talks.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was set to meet in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday.
Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Ukraine is ready to hold peace talks at the highest level, including a trilateral meeting with himself, Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy said he would accept any configuration of talks, whether that includes one trilateral meeting or separate meetings with Trump.
Merz said on Monday that Germany and other major allies are no longer imposing any range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine as it fights to repel Russia's full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Merz’s government hasn't said whether it will supply its Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, something his predecessor, Olaf Scholz, refused to do and which Merz advocated for as opposition leader.
The government has said it would no longer provide full details of the weapons it's supplying to Ukraine, unlike Scholz’s administration, citing the need for “strategic ambiguity.”

We want aid to come to our areas so that everyone can get things to eat and drink."

"Some people took aid and others didn’t. Those who didn’t take aid, what’s their fault? They have children and sick people to feed. What’s happening is unfair.. . All what’s happening is unfair. We want something dignified for us."

"Yesterday, I went there and there was a lack of organization. I took my ID with me because I thought there is an organized system in which I would receive coupons. We arrived there and found people charging for the coupons and that there is no system and we didn’t get anything and we left hungry."

    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Palestinians walked for nearly 10 kilometers (6 miles) through the hot sun in Gaza to reach a new Israeli and U.S.-backed aid distribution site in Rafah, only to encounter chaos and leave empty-handed or with whatever they could grab.
Some of them, visibly exhausted and distressed, spoke to The Associated Press after returning to Khan Younis.
Access to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation hub is allowed only on foot.
Osama Afifi, a displaced man originally from Rafah, said he went with his ID on Tuesday, expecting an organized aid distribution system.
Instead, he found crowds pushing and shoving. He received no aid and left hungry.
“People ruined everything inside … the boxes are torn up,” said Sameh Shallouf, adding that he grabbed what remained: five bags of hummus and five kilos of rice.
One man emptied his bag on the ground with only rice and hummus, while another man carried a bag of flour, pasta, salt and coffee creamer. Some people walked away with only a bottle of cooking oil or a few cans of food.
