  • The bad language Dept.
    (28 May 2025)
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    London - 27 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Frank, showrunner:
(Reporter: "Why is swearing in Scottish so much better than anywhere else?")
"I love it. I don't know especially when Kate Dickie swears and Kate at early on said, 'Can I, you know, do you need me to soften my accent?' I said, 'No, no, no no no.' I don't know, it just sounds great."
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Leah Byrne & Alexej Manvelov, actors:
(Reporter: "Why does it sound so much better in Scottish?")
Byrne: "I don't know, it just feels..."
    : Manvelov "But it does."
Byrne: "It just does, doesn't it? So satisfying. And I feel like Scott (Frank, showrunner) was, like, really happy for us to swear. Like, I've definitely added in a couple of extra words that maybe weren't in the script, but he was so happy and encouraging of it. Because it does sound good."
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Chloe Pirrie, actor:
(Reporter: "Why does swearing always sound better in Scottish?")
"Oh, it's just so much better. We're just good at it. Like, it's a national sport and you've got to be funny. If you're not funny, what's the point? And swearing is like creative and fun and anarchic and all of that stuff. And I think that that, yeah, it's very fun reading a script that has, that just embraces that and doesn't try and water it down."

  • Zelenskyy hails new investments by Germany that will boost Ukraine's defense capabilities
    (28 May 2025)

    1. Mid of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (left) and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (right)
    2. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"I am glad that today there are new agreements between our states on joint projects. We will not publicly discuss all the details, but today we have agreements on investment in production in Ukraine and first of all, these are weapons. This is production of drones, that will enable most effectively to protect lives of our soldiers."
    3. Mid of press conference
    4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"You can all see what Putin is doing every night, massive drone attacks. The Russians are using dozens of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hundreds of drones. In order to protect lives in our cities, we need constant support, air defense. Now we have very important agreements with Germany about air defense. The Germans are constantly supporting us, including with missiles for air defense. I would like to say thanks for that. I would also like to emphasize that this kind of support will make Russian terror meaningless. And also, when we talk about new support of weapons for our army, about more long range weapons for our soldiers, we are talking about how to reduce Russian offensive actions."
    5. Mid of press conference
    6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"We have discussed in detail the diplomatic possibilities, today's situation regarding (peace) talks. The world has been waiting for more than a week for the Russians to finish their so-called memorandum, what they need to stop the killing of people. Everyone is waiting. So far, they have not come up with anything new and are simply injecting their old ultimatums back into the information space. Ukraine believes that there should be no preconditions for a ceasefire."
    7. Mid of press conference
    8. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"Like you, I would like to have a completely open conversation with our partners, regarding Ukraine participating in this (NATO) summit. I think this is right and honest. In my opinion, if Ukraine is not present at the NATO summit, then this will be Putin's victory, but not over Ukraine, but over NATO. Therefore, the decision is up to the partners."

    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday as Ukraine seeks further military support amid a recent escalation in Russia's bombing campaign, despite U.S.-led efforts to end the war.
Zelenskyy called for deeper defense cooperation across Europe and with the United States, stressing the need for long-range capabilities and sustained military funding to ensure Ukraine’s resilience.
“I am glad that today there are new agreements between our states on joint projects. We will not publicly discuss all the details, but today we have agreements on investment in production in Ukraine and first of all, these are weapons,” he said in a joint press conference with Merz.
Germany has been the second-biggest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States.
Merz has plunged into diplomatic efforts to try to secure a ceasefire and keep Western support for Ukraine intact since becoming Germany’s leader three weeks ago.
European leaders have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of dragging his feet in U.S.-led peace talks.

European leaders have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of dragging his feet in U.S.-led peace talks.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was set to meet in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday.
Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Ukraine is ready to hold peace talks at the highest level, including a trilateral meeting with himself, Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy said he would accept any configuration of talks, whether that includes one trilateral meeting or separate meetings with Trump.
Merz said on Monday that Germany and other major allies are no longer imposing any range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine as it fights to repel Russia's full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Merz’s government hasn't said whether it will supply its Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, something his predecessor, Olaf Scholz, refused to do and which Merz advocated for as opposition leader.

    STORYLINE:
Portugal is counting the final votes on Wednesday for its general election which delivered another minority government as well as an unprecedented swing to populist party Chega that added momentum to Europe’s shift to the far-right.
The center-right Democratic Alliance, led by the Social Democratic Party, captured 86 seats in the 230-seat National Assembly to win the ballot on the 18th of May.
That outcome leaves it without a parliamentary majority.
There are still four seats to be allocated that will determine the second place and who will be the leader of the opposition, a role that has been traditionally attributed to one of the two main parties that have rotated in power - the Socialists and the Social Democrats.
Now, Chega is challenging that dominance and is likely to win some, if not most of the remaining seats that are attributed by the Portuguese voters living abroad.
Portugal’s third general election in three years provided little hope for ending the worst spell of political instability for decades in the European Union country of 10.6 million people.

    STORYLINE:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday as Kyiv seeks further military support amid a recent escalation in Russia's bombing campaign, despite U.S.-led efforts to end the war.
Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Ukraine is ready to hold peace talks at the highest level, including a trilateral meeting with himself, Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile Merz said on Monday that Germany and other major allies are no longer imposing any range restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine as it fights to repel Russia's full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Merz’s government hasn't said whether it will supply its Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, something his predecessor, Olaf Scholz, refused to do and which Merz advocated for as opposition leader.
The government has said it would no longer provide full details of the weapons it's supplying to Ukraine, unlike Scholz’s administration, citing the need for “strategic ambiguity.”
Taurus missiles have a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles). The German- and Swedish-made missiles, which are equipped with stealth technology, would be able to reach targets deep in Russia from Ukrainian soil, including the Black Sea.
Ukraine wants the missiles to complement the long-range Storm Shadow missiles sent by Britain and France’s nearly identical Scalp cruise missiles.
Zelenskyy had said that he planned to discuss the supply and use of long-range weapons in his talks with Merz.
