    STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron met with his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday in a visit aimed at boosting defence and trade cooperation.
Subianto hosted Macron and his wife, Brigitte, in a ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta before the two leaders led a bilateral meeting.
Macron's roughly week-long trip to Southeast Asia is focused on strengthening regional ties in an increasingly unstable global landscape.
Macron arrived in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, on Tuesday evening with French First Lady Brigitte for a three-day visit to Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
It was the second stop in his tour of the region after Vietnam, where Macron signed a deal to sell Hanoi 20 Airbus planes.
Military cooperation between Indonesia and France has grown in recent years, while Subianto was serving as Indonesia’s defence minister.
The two leaders met last November on the sidelines of the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil, where they discussed Indonesia’s plans to buy fighter jets and submarines from France.
Indonesia finalised an order for 42 French Dassault Rafale fighter jets in January 2024, and the first delivery is expected in early 2026.
The country also announced the purchase of two French Scorpene Evolved submarines and 13 Thales ground control interception radars.
Five of the radar systems are expected to be installed in the country’s new capital, Nusantara.
Indonesia has embarked on a drive to upgrade and modernize its arsenal and strengthen its domestic defence industry.
During his visit, Macron is also scheduled to meet with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn to discuss regional issues, and to give public lectures at Jakarta State University.
On Thursday, Macron and his wife are expected visit Borobudur, a 9th century Buddhist temple in the centre of Indonesia’s Java island and to visit a military academy before heading to Singapore, where he will speak at Asia’s top defence conference, the annual Shangri-La Dialogue.

Kerem Shalom Crossing, Israel – 28 May 2025
    1. Various of trucks carrying aid arriving at Kerem Shalom crossing
    2. Various of aid on trucks
    3. Various of trucks carrying aid arriving at crossing
    STORYLINE:
Trucks carrying humanitarian aid were seen entering the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Israel on Wednesday morning.
The crossing is on the border with the Gaza Strip and has been used as a crossing point to transfer aid into the enclave.
Meanwhile, Gaza's Health Ministry said Wednesday at least one Palestinian was killed and 48 others wounded when forces opened fire on a crowd overrunning a new aid distribution site in the Gaza Strip set up by an Israeli and U.S.-backed foundation.
Crowds of Palestinians broke through the fences around the distribution site on Tuesday, and an Associated Press journalist heard Israeli tank and gun fire, and saw a military helicopter firing flares.
It was not yet known whether the death and injuries were caused by Israeli forces, private contractors or others.
The foundation said its military contractors had not fired on the crowd but “fell back” before resuming aid operations. Israel said its troops nearby had fired warning shots.
Ajith Sunghay, head of the U.N. Human Rights Office for the Palestinian territories, had earlier told reporters in Geneva that 47 people were wounded, mostly by gunfire.
The distribution hub outside Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah was opened the day before by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which has been slated by Israel to take over aid operations.
The U.N. and other humanitarian organizations have rejected the new system, saying it won’t be able to meet the needs of Gaza’s 2.3 million people and allows Israel to use food as a weapon to control the population.
They have also warned of the risk of friction between Israeli troops and people seeking supplies.
Palestinians have become desperate for food after nearly three months of Israeli border closures pushed Gaza to the brink of famine.

  • Daily China MOFA briefing
    (28 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    MOFA Briefing
    Spokesperson: Mao Ning
    Date: 28 May 2025
    Duration: 5 min 25 sec
    1. On May 27, Premier Li Qiang attended the ASEAN–China–GCC Summit. Could the foreign ministry provide some details? What is the significance of strengthening ties and cooperation among China, ASEAN, and GCC countries under the current circumstances?
In his speech, Premier Li Qiang stated that the friendly exchanges among China, ASEAN, and GCC countries have a long history. Against the backdrop of a turbulent international landscape and sluggish global economic growth, establishing a tripartite summit as a platform for communication and cooperation is a major innovation in regional economic collaboration. Through closer connectivity and cooperation, the three parties can create a vibrant economic circle and growth pole, which holds great significance for their respective economic prosperity and for peace and development in Asia and the world.
The three sides should seize this historic opportunity, enrich the content of cooperation, and strive to become a model of cross-regional openness, cross-development-stage cooperation, and cross-civilization integration.
China is willing to strengthen the tripartite partnership with ASEAN and the GCC, discuss and formulate a high-quality Belt and Road cooperation action plan, enhance connectivity, expand cooperation in various fields, and promote people-to-people exchanges and mutual understanding. The three parties should also strengthen communication and coordination within multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, firmly oppose hegemonism and power politics, and promote global governance toward a more just and reasonable direction.
    2. The Japanese Defense Ministry said that the aircraft carrier Liaoning passed through Japan’s southern islands and is heading toward the western Pacific. Japan is closely monitoring this move. Why is the Chinese aircraft carrier so close to Japan? Is China sending a signal to Japan, the U.S., or Taiwan?
would refer you to the competent authority for the specifics. What I can tell you is that the activities of the Chinese warship in the relevant waters are fully in line with international law and the basic norms of international relations. We hope Japan can see this in a reasonable and objective manner.
    3. Follow up on the ASEAN-GCC-China forum, given the rising trade protectionism and global economic uncertainty, what role will China play in promoting tripartite economic cooperation?
As Premier Li Qiang pointed out in his speech at the opening ceremony of the economic forum, cooperation is the only correct answer to overcoming common challenges. In today’s context, working together to address challenges is in itself creating opportunities. China will continue to inject new momentum into tripartite cooperation through its own high-quality development.
Since the beginning of this year, China’s economy has continued to recover and improve, demonstrating strong resilience. China has clearly proposed a more proactive macro policy orientation and will continue to strengthen counter-cyclical adjustments.
    4. U.S. Secretary of State Rubio has notified all embassies and consulates to stop issuing any student visas. Has China communicated with the U.S. through diplomatic channels on this matter? What is your comment?

"The Liaoning (aircraft carrier) is currently in our southeast waters. Our forces are closely monitoring with C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) means and we are knowledgeable of its path since the beginning. The Defence Ministry declines to comment whether it (China) will conduct a drill around Taiwan. When dealing with the PLA, we do anticipate the enemy as broadly as possible and to defend against the enemy strictly -- this means they are prepared no matter what. We also carefully evaluate and act accordingly."
    7. Mid of journalist asking a question
    8. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Su Tong-wei, Colonel in the Taiwan Defence Ministry’s operation and planning department:
“Regarding China’s targeted military drills and grey zone harassments, we are evaluating the levels of threat to consider whether to activate a response centre, or to increase our defence readiness to perform an immediate readiness drill. We will also react accordingly to safeguard national security.”
    9. Various of military officers leaving conference
    STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s defence ministry is closely monitoring the path and activities of China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning as pro-Taiwan US Sen. Tammy Duckworth is visiting the democratic self-governing island to discuss regional security and relations with the US.
Col. Hu Chung-hua of the Taiwanese Defence Ministry's' intelligence department told reporters Wednesday that the carrier was currently in waters southeast of Taiwan and has been under close surveillance by Taiwan's monitoring stations since leaving its home port in China.
There are concerns the carrier might stage military drills close to Taiwan that could be a further step toward a blockade, an act the U.S. would be required to respond to under its own laws.
While the U.S. provides much of Taiwan's high-tech military hardware, the law is unclear whether it would send forces to aid Taiwan in the event of a conflict.
Hu said the ministry would not comment on the possibility of drills near Taiwan, but considers all options while monitoring the Chinese military.
The ministry "anticipates the enemy as broadly as possible and defends against the enemy strictly. We also carefully evaluate and act accordingly,” Hu said.
China is considered a master of “grey-zone encounters” that bring tensions just to the point of breaking out into open conflict.
Col. Su Tong-wei of the ministry's operation of planning said the armed forces were constantly evaluating threat levels to consider whether to “activate a response centre, or to increase our defence readiness to perform an immediate readiness drill.”
"We will also react accordingly to safeguard national security,” Su said.
While China sends military aircraft, ships and spy balloons near Taiwan as part of a campaign of daily harassment, special attention has been given this week to the location of the Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier, whose hull was bought from Ukraine and then fitted out by China more than a decade ago.

    FANS SUPPORT MICHAEL JACKSON
As the spectacle of Michael Jackson's arrest was beamed to viewers around the world, fans rallied to the pop icon's defense while his entertainment industry peers mostly kept a cautious silence.
After Jackson returned to Las Vegas following his booking Thursday on suspicion of child molestation, fans flocked to his caravan as it cruised along city streets.
Jackson followers planned rallies at his star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and at his Neverland Ranch, as well as in London and New York.
The entertainment world largely withheld comment.
Many fans speculated the charges may be part of a vendetta pursued by Santa Barbara County District Attorney Tom Sneddon, who tried to build a child-molestation case against Jackson a decade ago.
The case collapsed after Jackson's accuser reportedly accepted a multi-million dollar civil settlement and refused to testify in a criminal case.

    (15 Aug 1994) Story No. 14
JACKSON REVIVES RED ARMY FOR HIS LATEST VIDEO
Budapest, Hungary English Commentary Duration: 1.05"
Michael Jackson led mock Red Army troops past a cheering crowd as
filming began on the video for the pop star's new album.
Details of the script were a closely guarded secret, but the film
was thought to depict Jackson as a freedom fighter who liberates
a communist country from Red Army troops.
Filming took place in front of an ornate castle in Budapest. The
castle courtyard was decorated with enormous red flags and banners
displaying a picture of Jackson posing with guns.
Extras were dressed for the shoot in uniforms borrowed from the
Hungarian army. The banned Red Star had been reattached for the
filming. Jackson did not sing or dance. The star spent most of the time
being shielded from the scorching sun by a crew member holding a
large pink umbrella. Jackson's new bride, Lisa Marie Presley, was
    also present during the filming.

    STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed pardons for reality TV stars Julie and Todd Chrisley, who have been serving federal prison sentences since being convicted three years ago of bank fraud and tax evasion.
Trump's pardons pave the way for the couple best known for the TV series “Chrisley Knows Best” to be freed from prison. Todd Chrisley, 57, has been incarcerated at a minimum security prison camp in Pensacola, Florida. Julie Chrisley, 52, was imprisoned at a facility in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Chrisleys' TV show portrayed them as a tight-knit family with an extravagant lifestyle. Prosecutors at the couple’s 2022 trial said the couple spent lavishly on high-priced cars, designer clothes, real estate and travel after taking out fraudulent bank loans worth millions of dollars and hiding their earnings from tax authorities.
Trump announced his intention to pardon the Chrisleys on Tuesday, saying the celebrity couple had been “given a pretty harsh treatment based on what I’m hearing.” It was another example of the president, himself a former reality TV star, pardoning high-profile friends, supporters, donors and former staffers.
Before she was pardoned, Julie Chrisley had been scheduled for release in January 2028, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. Todd Chrisley was to remain imprisoned until September 2032.
During the couple’s trial, prosecutors said the Chrisleys hadn’t yet become TV stars when they and a former business partner submitted false documents to banks in the Atlanta area to obtain fraudulent loans. New loans were taken out to pay off the old ones, according to prosecutors, until Todd Chrisley filed for bankruptcy, walking away from more than $20 million in unpaid loans.
The Chrisleys’ defense attorneys had argued that an IRS officer gave false testimony at their trial and that prosecutors lacked evidence to support convictions.
A panel of judges of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Chrisleys’ convictions last year.

It is a fancy purple-pink diamond from the 18th century, and most likely from the Golconda mines in India. From Marie Thérèse of Angoulême it passed on to her niece, Duchess Marie Thérèse of Chambord, and from there to Duchess Marie Thérèse of Bavaria. In 1996, the descendants of Duchess Marie Thérèse of Bavaria sold the diamond at auction in Geneva, and this is the only other time it is coming up for sale at Christie's in New York on June 17, with an estimate of 3 to 5 million US dollars.”

    STORYLINE:
A ring so special it's on a world tour.
Los Angeles, Geneva and now Hong Kong.
The stone is associated with European royalty, being passed down from the famous queen Marie Antoinette to several of her elite descendants.
Weighing 10.38 carat, this fancy purple-pink, kite-shaped diamond dates back to the mid 18th century.
While no official records have been found, by repute, this diamond is believed to have owned by Marie Thérèse of Angoulême, who was the daughter of Marie Antoinette.
In 1996, the diamond resurfaced at an auction in Geneva, offered for sale by a member of a European royal family. Since then, it has been hidden from the public eye until now.
The diamond is now set in a ring by Joel Arthur Rosenthal, the famous Parisian jeweler, called JAR for short.
It's expected to fetch between $3 million and $5 million.
The ring will go under the hammer in New York on 17 June.
