  • Harvard students rally against Trump's attacks on the university
    (28 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Cambridge, Massachusetts - 27 May 2025
    1. Rally attendees chanting
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacob Miller, Harvard student, Harvard Hillel President:
"If there is anything to learn from this Jewish history, it's that when we push people out of our schools because of their identity, it's a symptom of a morally bankrupt politics. That is why the administration's excuse for these policies that they somehow address anti-Semitism, are so absurd. Let's be clear: this has nothing to do with combating anti-Semitism."
    3. Rally attendees holding signs
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rae Trainer, Harvard student:
"Trump is using our international students as a bargaining chip. He's threatening to revoke our school's hosting status unless we turn over a massive amount of disciplinary information and surveillance. This is - this is information we are not legally required to give. And once he has it, he will use it for his own nefarious ends."
    5. Rally attendee holding sign and dog
    STORYLINE:
Harvard students held a rally on Tuesday, protesting against President Donald Trump's attacks on the prestigious institution.
The efforts by Trump’s administration to prevent Harvard University from enrolling international students have struck at the core of the Ivy League school's identity and unsettled current and prospective students around the world.
The government last week told Harvard's thousands of current foreign students that they must transfer to other schools or they will lose their legal permission to be in the U.S. That decision is currently on hold, a federal judge ruled Friday, pending a lawsuit.
Harvard enrolls about 7,000 international students, most of them in graduate programs. Those students may now have to scramble to figure out their next steps.
"Trump is using our international students as a bargaining chip," Harvard student Rae Trainer told the attendance at the rally on campus on Tuesday.
The Department of Homeland Security took this latest step because Harvard failed to comply fully with requests to produce records about its foreign students, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a letter. Noem accused Harvard of “perpetuating an unsafe campus environment that is hostile to Jewish students, promotes pro-Hamas sympathies and employs racist ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ policies.’”
Harvard said the action is unlawful and undermines the school’s research mission.
Jacob Miller, a Harvard student and the President of the center for Jewish life Harvard Hillel, said at the rally "I'm here today to tell you that the Jewish community rejects this administration's narrative."
The Trump administration is asking federal agencies to cancel remaining contracts with Harvard University, a senior administration official said Tuesday.
The government already has canceled more than $2.6 billion in federal research grants for the Ivy League school, which has pushed back on the administration’s demands for changes to several of its policies.
Cuts to contracts could take away millions more from Harvard’s budget.

    Nagasaki, Japan - 24 April 2025
    13. Mid of key-shaped tail cat
    STORYLINE:
In Japan, bobtail cats are considered good luck and Nagasaki is the place to find them.
They are known as “omagari neko (bent-tail cats)” or “kagi neko (hook cats)” and have their own society of admirers and even a dedicated Shinto shrine.
Their tails come in varieties including hook-shaped at the tip, curved or in a bun, explained Kazuya Hideshima, a worker at Omagari Neko Shrine and member of the Nagasaki Cat Society.
Past findings have indicated bobtails accounted for nearly 80% of the cats in Nagasaki, twice the occurrence of anywhere else in Japan.
Japanese cats are believed to have come from China in the 6th century with Buddhist monks, serving as rat hunters to protect religious scriptures on ships.
Nagasaki bobtails have their roots in the Dutch East Indies when the city was the only foreign port during Japan's closed era in the 17th to 19th centuries. They hunted rats to protect shipments on their way from Southeast Asia to Japan, according to Nagasaki cultural officials.
Soshin Yamamoto, a veterinarian and cat specialist, said the large population of bobtails in Nagasaki is likely the result of a genetic mutation that reproduced in a relatively isolated environment when the nation was shut up tight.
Nagasaki residents hope the cats bring in tourists and help business.
Natsuno Kani, a 50-year-old tourist from Tokyo who recently visited the bobtail shrine, said she knew Nagasaki was famous for bent-tail cats.
But Abigail Tarraso, an artist from Spain based in Takeo City in neighbouring Saga prefecture, was unfamiliar with the species, which is not as popular in Spain.
“Today is the first time in Nagasaki that I have ever heard of this,” said Cindy Bi, an American who is also an artist.
“I am excited to look around for them. Maybe we will see a few."

  • Harvard students rally against Trump's attacks on the university
    (28 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Cambridge, Massachusetts - 27 May 2025
    1. Rally attendees chanting
    2. Various of attendees holding signs
    3. Trumpeter on stage
Let's be clear: this has nothing to do with combating anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism is a real problem. It's a problem at Harvard. It's a problem in the country. But these policies will do nothing to combat this age old hatred. Instead, they are designed to divide us apart. And so I'm here today to tell you that the Jewish community rejects this administration's narrative."
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Enos, Professor of Government and director of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University:
"Freedom of speech and due process. These are the foundations of the American system. These are the foundations of a free society. But Donald Trump is attacking these freedoms because they get in the way of his authoritarian takeover. This is what authoritarians do."
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Clyve Lawrence, Harvard student:
"Trump has begun a dangerous march to roll back civil rights in this country. We've seen in his vicious racist attacks on speech and diversity, and his alliance with far right billionaires who amplify fascist rhetoric."
    7. SOUNDBITE (English) Avinashi Bhandari, Harvard student:
"The attack on Harvard and its international students is part of a deeper effort to disband and dismantle the academic world. It's an attempt to reroute our brightest researchers into private corporations, stripping academic institutions of their power."
And once he has it, he will use it for his own nefarious ends. He will use it to attack student protesters, like all of you standing here today. Shame. Trump is also proposing, just now, to review the social media feeds of student visa applicants, presumably so that he can screen out those who disagree with him. Shame. When Trump demands viewpoint diversity at our university, it's clear what he really means. He wants to control what our students say, think and believe. Shame."
    9. SOUNDBITE (English) Leo Gerdén, Swedish Harvard international student, Co-Founder 'Students For Freedom':
"What the international students are caught in now, it's just a limbo. It is going back and forth - it's going to go back and forth in the courts. We're probably going to have to wait up until it reaches the Supreme Court until we know something for sure. And in the meantime, just the uncertainty itself deters people from coming to this country to do research and to study. And it's really going to threaten the U.S. position at the forefront of innovation and in research because a place like Harvard - what makes Harvard Harvard is not its legacy or endowment or anything like that. It is ability to bring back the best and the brightest from all around the world, put us in the same dining halls, put us in the same classrooms, and that is what is under threat right now,."

    10. SOUNDBITE (English) Yvonne Strahovski, actor on fans hating her character Serena Waterford Wharton:
“For the haters, you know appropriately: hate away I mean she's hate-able, she's judge-able. I mean there's so much about her that jeez. Even, you know, we were thrown back into watching clips last night of the early days and I couldn't watch it. I literally sat in that panel. I sat, turned away, and I said, 'I'm not watching this. I cannot.' It was so disgusting to me to go down memory lane and see her in all her heinous glory. So yeah, I can understand why people hated her, but she and the gift that I've been given is that she is so complex. And you have... There's so much more to her than just that. And that's a credit to the writers and how they've crafted and allowed me to go on this journey and trusted me with all the gray areas and the nuances of her. I mean, this has just been so extraordinary.”

    STORYLINE:
Bright flashes were seen lighting up the sky over the Gaza Strip late Tuesday night.
It comes as chaos erupted on the second day of aid operations by a new U.S.-backed group in Gaza as desperate Palestinians overwhelmed a center distributing food on Tuesday, breaking through fences.
Nearby Israeli troops fired warning shots, sending people fleeing in panic.
An AP journalist heard Israeli tank and gunfire and saw a military helicopter firing flares.
The Israeli military said its troops fired the warning shots in the area outside the center and that “control over the situation was established.”
