    (27 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    New York - 27 May 2025
    1. William Duplessie is escorted out of the New York Police 13th Precinct after turning himself in on charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment
    STORYLINE:
    A second cryptocurrency investor has surrendered to police in the alleged kidnapping and torture of a man inside an upscale Manhattan apartment.
    Authorities say the victim was beaten and held for weeks by captors seeking access to his Bitcoin password.
    Police say 32-year-old William Duplessie will face charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment.
    Another crypto investor, John Woeltz, was arrested Friday. Hours earlier, the victim fled the lavish townhouse, bloodied and barefoot. He told prosecutors his captors beat him, plied him with drugs and dangled him off a staircase, demanding access to his crypto.
    It wasn't immediately clear if Duplesse had an attorney who could speak for him. Woeltz's attorney declined to comment.

  • What Trump wants and what Europe can offer in the US-EU trade showdown
    (27 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Bethesda, Maryland - 27 May 2025
    ++STARTS ON A SOUNDBITE++
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Reinsch, Senior Advisor at CSIS:
    "(Trump) got frustrated with the EU and announced that he was going to accelerate the process because he didn't think they were negotiating fast enough. So he reset the date, for the EU to June 1st and reset the tariffs to 50%, which was higher than what he had initially proposed. Then, over the weekend, he got a call from the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who persuaded him basically to back off and restore the previous date. So they're back to July 9th for the new tariffs. But he's leaving it at 50%. So the threat is bigger than it was before, but the timing is the same as it was before."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Reinsch, Senior Advisor at CSIS:
    "You're right, it's kind of a yo-yo policy. You know, tariffs are on, they're off, they're up, they're down. They're large, they're small. They're exemptions. There are no exemptions. Every few days there's a new thing, so it's very hard to predict. Although we're beginning to see a pattern. And the pattern is big demands, big threats. And then a postponement, and then, sometimes, as with the UK, which is the only agreement so far that's actually finished, a fairly modest outcome."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Reinsch, Senior Advisor at CSIS:
    "What Trump says when he talks about the EU. And he tends to focus on the things that irritate him. And once you get past the rhetoric about it's unfair and they're cheating us, the specifics are, they have a value-added tax, which he thinks is a subsidy. They have a Digital Services Tax, which he thinks treats our companies unfairly. They have a higher car tariff than we do. He's really obsessed with cars. And they have a whole... They have digital trade rules that he thinks discriminate against American companies. He's right about that one. And they have what are referred to as sanitary and phytosanitary standards, which means sort of health food standards, food health and safety standards that, among other things, prevent our chickens from getting into the European Union."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Reinsch, Senior Advisor at CSIS:
    "You know, it's easier to talk about tariffs because they're numbers, you know, and we want them to lower the car tariff. You know that's not simple, but that's a number. When you get into health and safety and rules and environmental rules, you're talking about the way countries organize their economies and their societies. You know, we think it's protection. They think it's health, you know, and telling them you need to take our chickens, is telling them they need to lower their safety standards. And that's a bigger, much bigger ask. And there's a much bigger political cost in Europe, too, if they agree to that. So it's going to be a hard negotiation."
    ++BLACK FRAMES++
    5. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Reinsch, Senior Advisor at CSIS:
    "We've been talking about some of this stuff for 40 years without resolution. It's not going to happen in the next three months. If you look at the UK deal, though, there's a pathway. That was, by my estimation, 20% tangible concessions and 80% aspirational, you know, we agree to talk more about this in the future. So in the UK agreement, they agreed to have a future negotiation about digital trade. They agreed to have a future negotiation about pharmaceuticals."

    STORYLINE:
    Tesla sales across Europe plunged by half last month even as growth in the electric car market picked up pace, according to data released Tuesday.
    The numbers are the latest indication of how much the Tesla brand is suffering because of the backlash against billionaire CEO Elon Musk over his far-right views.
    Sales of Tesla vehicles in 32 European countries tumbled 49% to 7,261 in April from 14,228 in the same month the previous year, according to the figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, or ACEA.
    At the same time, sales of battery-electric vehicles by all manufacturers rose about 28%. Meanwhile, sales of gasoline and diesel powered cars slumped.
    The figures, which cover the European Union's 27 member countries and five other nations outside the bloc, back up early data from Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark released at the start of this month that had pointed to a sales collapse.
    Tesla has been reeling from protests and boycotts over Musk wading into politics, but it also faces other factors including an aging model lineup and intensifying competition from rival electric vehicle brands, particularly from China.
    U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war has also turned Europeans off buying American brands. In recent days, Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on EU goods, accusing the bloc of being “very difficult to deal with," before agreeing to delay the duties until July.

    7. Varias tomas de vendedores ambulantes en la playa
    STORYLINE:
    La musica de samba, vendedores ambulantes y alquiler de sillas con parte de la vida habitual en las playas de Río de Janeiro.
    Pero el alcalde de la ciudad está intentando endurecer la normativa sobre la arena.
    A mediados de mayo, el alcalde Eduardo Paes promulgó un decreto por el que se establecían nuevas normas en las playas de la ciudad, argumentando que quería preservar el orden urbano, la seguridad pública y el medio ambiente, así como fomentar las relaciones pacíficas entre turistas y residentes.
    Las nuevas medidas entrarán en vigor el 1 de junio y prohíben la venta de comida y bebida, el alquiler de sillas, los altavoces e incluso la música en vivo en quioscos sin permiso oficial.
    Además, las casetas de playa sólo podrán tener un número, en lugar de los nombres, a menudo creativos, con los que se conocen actualmente.
    Algunos han acogido con satisfacción la medida para atajar lo que perciben como actividad caótica en la playa.
    Pero otros dicen que el decreto amenaza la dinámica cultura playera de Río y el sustento de muchos músicos y vendedores locales a los que puede resultar difícil o imposible conseguir permisos.
    La propuesta aún tiene que ser votada formalmente, y no está claro si eso ocurrirá antes del 1 de junio.
    Si se aprueba, el proyecto de ley tendrá prioridad sobre el decreto.
    La actividad económica en las playas de Río, excluidos quioscos, bares y restaurantes, genera unos 4.000 millones de reales (unos 710 millones de dólares) al año, según un informe de 2022 del Ayuntamiento de Río.

    "Siento lástima de mí misma, soy educada y como de la basura porque si no, entonces no consigo comer. Somos siete personas (en mi familia) y mi marido está enfermo y ha resultado herido durante la guerra. No puede ir a ninguna parte y está en paro. Así que todos los días traigo comida a mis hijos de la basura. La hiervo y me la como.”

    STORYLINE:
    Una mujer y su hija están sentadas entre montones de escombros, edificios destruidos y moscas, sobre un montón de basura.
    Rebuscan entre bolsas de basura, con la esperanza de encontrar restos de comida para alimentar a su familia.
    “Como puede ver, estamos aquí como perros callejeros recogiendo comida de la basura”, dijo Islam Abu Taeima, de 40 años y madre de cinco hijos.
    La mujer dijo que no tiene otra opción.
    “Aunque traigan ayuda, no nos llega nada”, dijo.
    La familia Abu Taeima forma parte de los más de dos millones de palestinos que están al borde de la hambruna tras 19 meses de guerra entre Hamás e Israel.
    Israel dice que el bloqueo junto con una escalada militar constituyen una táctica para presionar a Hamás para que libere a los rehenes que aún mantiene en Gaza.
    Bajo una presión internacional, Israel empezó a permitir la entrada de un goteo de ayuda humanitaria en Gaza la semana pasada, pero la mayor parte de ella no llegó a la población, bien por el saqueo de los camiones de ayuda o por las severas restricciones impuestas por Israel, especialmente en el norte de Gaza.
    El marido de Abu Taeima resultó herido en la guerra de 2021 entre Hamás e Israel, una lesión que lo dejó sin trabajo.
    Por eso ella y su hija Waad, de nueve años, deambulan por la ciudad de Gaza en busca de sobras en la basura.
    “Esta es la dura verdad que estamos viviendo”, afirma Abu Taeima, una mujer licenciada en lengua inglesa de la Universidad Abierta de Al-Quds.
    “Me da pena porque tengo estudios y, a pesar de ello, estoy comiendo de la basura”.
