Democratic lawmakers tried to build a case Friday that Republicans in Texas have engineered a rushed and unfair process for redrawing the state's congressional districts in response to a push by President Donald Trump to win more GOP seats that Democrats fear will spread to other states.

Democrats in the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature delayed the start of public testimony during a hearing of a state House Committee on Redistricting by peppering its chair with pointed questions about how quickly GOP lawmakers planned to move and whether the public is getting enough of an opportunity to weigh in. The Republican proposal would give the GOP five more winnable seats in next year's elections, which would make it easier for the party to keep its slim U.S. House majority.

STORYLINE:

Demonstrators gathered on Friday in front of the U.S. consulate in Sao Paulo to protest the 50% tariff outlined by the Trump administration on Brazilian exports.

Organized by unions and left-wing social movements, protesters waved banners a loft and chanted in support of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Brazil’s sovereignty whilst strongly criticizing Trump and Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Some wore costumes resembling Trump and Bolsonaro while two effigies with the faces of Trump and Bolsonaro were set alight.

Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that set new tariffs on a wide swath of U.S. trading partners to go into effect on August 7 — the next step in his trade agenda that will test the global economy and sturdiness of American alliances built up over decades.

Trump had announced a 50% tariff on goods from Brazil, but the order was only 10% as the other 40% were part of a separate measure approved by Trump on Wednesday.

While Lula says he remains open to negotiation with the U.S., he made it clear that Bolsonaro’s current legal situation was not part of any deal.

Hundreds of Palestinians on Friday mourned 45-year-old Khamis Ayad who they said died while extinguishing fires set by Israeli settlers during an attack.

During the funeral, mourners marched to the village cemetery carrying the body of Ayad, some holding Hamas flags while chanting "Blow up the head of the settler."

Witnesses in Silwad, a village northeast of Ramallah, said Israeli forces fired live rounds and tear gas toward residents after the settlers attacked.

Israel’s military said police were investigating the incident. They said security forces found Hebrew graffiti and a burnt vehicle at the scene but had not detained any suspects.

There has been a rise in settler attacks, as well as Palestinian militant attacks on Israelis and large-scale Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank since Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack out of Gaza triggered the war there.

Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, that day and abducted 251 others. They still hold 50 hostages, including around 20 believed to be alive. Most of the others have been released in ceasefires or other deals.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Its count doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians. The ministry operates under the Hamas government.

The U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

The Co-Chairs of the Joint EAC-SADC Summit President William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe resolved on Friday to have one Africa-led peace initiative for the conflict in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

During a meeting with representatives from the African Union and member states to discuss the security crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe led resolutions to merge the mediation and secretariat structures of the EAC (East African Community), SADC (Southern African Development Community), and African Union into a unified effort led by the AU in Addis Ababa.
